Subject: What does DAR mean? From: GerryM Date: 02 Jan 21 - 04:02 AM No, not Daughters of the American Revolution, not in this case. I have a CD of music of the accordionist Flaco Jimenez, and on several tracks, where the liner notes should have the composer's name, it just says, DAR. Is that some kind of abbreviation or Spanish for "Traditional", or "Public Domain"? |
Subject: RE: What does DAR mean? From: GUEST,RA Date: 02 Jan 21 - 04:06 AM Googled it: Derechos Autorales Reservados. All rights reserved. Happy new year! |
Subject: RE: What does DAR mean? From: GerryM Date: 02 Jan 21 - 04:18 AM Excellent! I managed to find the same thing, by a more roundabout method. But who is reserving the rights? The people who produced the CD? Are they claiming authorship? I'm planning to play these tracks on the radio, and I want to know what to write on the logsheet in the "composer" column. |
Subject: RE: What does DAR mean? From: Jeri Date: 02 Jan 21 - 11:05 AM I would GUESS that if it's Flaco Jimenez's CD, it's likely to be Flaco Jimenez. But I understand it would be good to KNOW. I suppose searching for the individual songs doesn't help? |

Subject: RE: What does DAR mean? -Derechos Autorales Reservados From: GUEST,RA Date: 02 Jan 21 - 03:19 PM Maybe it's a bit like 'Copyright control' - when the works are credited to, in this case, Flaco as author/composer, but perhaps aren't officially 'published'. |
Subject: RE: What does DAR mean? -Derechos Autorales Reservados From: GerryM Date: 02 Jan 21 - 04:01 PM Jeri, it's not exactly Flaco Jimenez' CD, it's a compilation "Best Of" CD put out by Arhoolie. Searching for one of the songs is how I found out what D. A. R. stood for – the allmusic site credits D. A. R. as the composer of an inordinate number of songs, as if it was a person, but the page also expanded the abbreviation. Leeneia, I should have thought of that. I'll try to contact someone at the station, after the weekend. RA, yes, "Copyright control" sounds about right (although I never really understood what that meant, either!). |
