Sad news today.

Our honorary Aussie actor, Sam Neill has passed away. He's was really a Kiwi (New Zealander) but here in Oz we did our best to claim him as one of our own.

Actor Sam Neill

"In short: Actor Sam Neill, known for his performances in films such as My Brilliant Career, Jurassic Park, The Piano and The Dish, has died aged 78.

"A statement on his social media account says he died in Sydney 'surrounded by his family' and that he 'remained cancer free'.

"Tributes are flowing for Neill, remembering him as a great of the film and television industries."

He was in a lot of great movies but one of my favourites is the quirky, funny, clever Hunt for the Wilderpeople

From Jurassic Park to The Piano, here are Sam Neill's best roles

Death in Brunswick is also a darkly funny movie.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople is wonderful....and I love The Dish, too, especially having visited it.

First saw him on Reilly Ace of Spies (I think it was called). He played a real-life character who was credited with starting the Russo-Japan war.

He was a cool dude. I haven't seen most of those movies listed above, have to track them down.

Just remembered, he had a minor role in The Horse Whisperer but outshone the male lead, Redford, imo.

I was thinking back this morning and the first substantive piece I remember him in was Reilly Ace of Spies that played on our local PBS station. I'm just now hearing about his wonderful Instagram account that managed to soothe and entertain followers during COVID and beyond.

I thought I had seen most of Sam Neill's movies and TV shows, but a search on IMDB returns a list of 155. Wow! (In the Credits list, click the "See all" link below the first list of shows for the full list.)

Tributes from Australia and Hollywood after death of actor Sam Neill at 78

I watched the TV mini-series with him as Merlin last night. He was a great actor and the world is now a sadder place.

Hey Aussies!

Hunt For the Wilderpeople is on SBS TV tonight at 7.35 pm or tomorrow on SBS Movie channel at 4.45 pm.

Very funny, very clever movie. Sam Neill's character is great and so is Ricky, the young man! IMO

Yes, I saw that.....and on ABC Classic FM earlier this evening, the movie music program featured music from Sam's movies. A lovely tribute, I thought.

I first saw Sam Neill in “Reilly, Ace of Spies”. He was brilliant, utterly convincing in a challenging role.

He always looked and acted like the most intelligent person in the story.
