Hi
I am looking for the lyrics and chords to a song called 'general hill'.
I can only remember the first couple of lines.

"general hill is going to sea, ay boys oh ray boys" and not sure who sung it so not got much to go on i'm afraid.

Cheers

TasKiNG

Could this be a version of Waterloo?

Thanks for the reply, I have looked at waterloo and although there is a connection with waterloo this is not the song.

Cheers

look in this thread for discussion of The Bold Benjamin, which usually has Admiral Cole(y) or Captian Chilvers, but there may be a version with General Hill.

Thanks Snuffy

The songs have a very similar layout to General Hill but different lyrics.

I think I have remembered the start to two more of the verses.

What if we should meet the French?
Hey boys oh ray boys
What if we should meet the French?
Oh ray boys

and

What if we the Turks should meet?
Hey boys oh ray boys
What if we the Turks should meet?
Oh ray boys

Cheers

TasKing-

Sure looks to me as if "The Bold Benjamin" is related in some fashion to what you're looking for, at least in terms of using the same verse form and likely the same tune. However, the original broadside "The Benjamin Lamentations," has been traced back to the 17th century.

I'll have to re-check that thread but I thought I remembered an army version being mentioned.

Interesting.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

The army version, entitled "The Grenadiers' Rant", commences "Captain Hume is bound to sea, Hey boys, ho boys." It's the same vintage as "The Benjamin Lamentations" and does have a similar structure.

Sorry for picking this up a bit late. "General Hill" is on "Saga"s' 2nd L.P. " Sweet Peg of Derby", Which was recorded in 1973.
However I'm buggered if I can remember where we got it from. I'll give it some thought.

Incidently there were 4 members of Saga. The one
missing From your query of Jan '04 Was Roger warren.
