does anyone have any biog. info about George Weir, from Peebles, who wrote songs others such as the Corries sang? Did he sing /perform himself?

I only know that he was a baker from Peebles, and he wrote Cam Ye by Atholl, and the Gartan Mother's lullaby among others.

He was a serious man. Talked about history as if he was there himself. No he didn’t perform. He was of a different time.

"The Gartan Mother's Lullaby" is by Seosamh Mac Cathmhaoil/Joseph Campbell, early C20th and to an air collected by Herbert Hughes, I would assume in County Donegal. Lough Gartan is traditionally said to be the birthplace of St. Colmcille/Columba.

George had a bakers van . He came up from Peebles to our house at Moorfoot twice a week. My Mum & Dad were great friends with him & once when we were visiting him in Peebles The Corries were at his house. He also taught my sister yo play guitar. Lovely friendly man. I'm sure he also wrote The lyrics to the Black Douglas
