Watching Paint Dry: This movie demonstrates the processes occurring when emulsion-paint dries. Initially spherical beads of polymer based paint are suspended in water. As the water dries the paint spheres come into contact and pack into an array approximating that of a cubic close packed lattice. As the paint dries further the contact area between the paint balls increases, until all of the void volume has been lost. At this point each of the original paint balls will have adopted a dodecahedral close packing shape called a 'Kelvin solid', after Lord Kelvin, who first predicted the shape from studies of bubble packing in three dimensions.

What about oil paint? Who cares about emulsion paint? What the hell is emulsion paint anyway? Sounds like something Mona Lisa might use for anal irrigation.

What about antimony? I thought antimony was used to make paint dry. I used to mine antimony. I was told that's why I was being paid to mine the stuff. So that paint could dry.

Speculating on the motivational reasons of any fellow poster is perhaps not something our forum is best suited for.

Most of us would not generally consider speculating on a fellow poster's efforts toward watching crap dessicate to be a matter for humour - perhaps we should consider watching paint dry in the same way?

Perhaps it would behoove all who post here to consider carefully the effect that their words might have on other posters and to conduct themselves accordingly, bearing in mind that anything they say here may come back to haunt them at some future time. Perhaps we should all give more thought to what we post, how we post, when we post, and where we post when we are posting and further to whether we should post at all in some cases, given the fact that posting posts is a personal matter and can have repercussions not suspected when the posts are first posted?

But is the paint dry yet?

There is a certain "ethic" to one's proper behaviour in watching paint dry; but it varies greatly among devotees.

There are, as we all know, vas_st numbers of people who cannot resist "sticking a digit in it" whenever confronted with a "Wet Paint" sign. Others treat a Wet Paint notice as a personal affront, seem compelled to disbelieve it, and will immediately sit on any freshly painted surface just to prove they don't have to "conform."

For the ultimate opportunity to judge erratic and irrational behaviour, however, nothing beats a conspicuous sign on a prominent surface in a public place that says:



               DRY
             PAINT



Watching from a discreet distance is advised, as some people simply don't seem able to handle the situation.

JiK - I have always understood the signs which say "WET PAINT" to be an instruction, not a warning!
Shambles - I am sure you mean well with this thread, but watching someone else's paint doesn't give the same excitement as putting on your own coat. That is, unless it's Rolf Haris painting - can you see what it is yet? - and he invariably had three legs under his coat.

It is possible the although we are all fellow travelers, each individual can and should decide his approach to Wet Paint for himself; might it be that to prescribe attitudes toward drying paint for others is actually a subtle imposition on their native freedom? Perhaps we are too hasty to circumscribe that freedom with ideas of how they "should" decide? Maybe we should be more deferntial to our fellow-travelers and their self-determination?

The title of this thread is misleading. Since paint dries at a different rate due to humidity - I'm unclear about the point of this thread. IF this is about paint drying in the UK { where it is much more humid than say - Arizona or New Mexico }I would suggest that Joe or the clones re-title this thread so that it's true content is clear to the rest of us fellow posters.

Perhaps the color should not be changed by an anonymous fellow painter without consulting the original painter and getting his permission. Of course, this might be difficult in the case of an anonymous "guest" painter (or graffiti artist), but that is no excuse. In fact, to change the color is an act of censorship.

I've never seen paint dry in the UK (I'm not sure it does), but I have seen it dry in Idaho. I barely had time to sprinkle the glitter on the wall!

Speaking technically, the title of this thread, "watching paint dry," is a noun phrase based on a gerund.

What would count as a "sensible" comment to a noun?

It seems to me that a thread with a nounal title would be essentialy an exercise in word association.

Now, word assocations are neither sensible nor non-sensible. They simply are. In some contexts, They might be viewed as symptoms, but then again symptoms are neither sensible nor not sensible.

On Mudcat there is all too often a tendency to miss the essential point of a thread, but I do not think that this is the issue here.
What we have here is, if I remember correctly, a garden variety "category" mistake.

Shane astral travels when comatose from too many beers and junk food. The only trouble is, he doesn't astral travel very far. Limited horizons. He once made it to North Bay, and hung out inside the Beer Store after hours, but couldn't drink any because he was in the astral body. What a drag, eh?

What we have here is not a question of watching paint dry at all.

It is not paint and it is not wet and even if it were wet it could be any state of dryness that Max required it to be. It is not paint but if it were it would be Max's paint and it would not be a right for us to watch it dry - just a privilege.

The excitment of "watching paint dry" is a matter of perspective. For example, if I am in the far corner of a room with paint drying on all sides my interest is riveted. Otherwise I'm likely to do something else.

One of my personal painting experiences took place when I was working the gas dock at our village marina in Maine as a teenager. It was a quiet weekday early in the season and the manager thought it would be a great idea if I painted the gas float. So I sanded it down here and there and was half way through slapping down battleship gray when one of the older members of the boat yard crew came down the gangway and stared critically at my work. I asked him how I was doing. He kind of grimaced and said, "Well, I think it would stick better if you didn't brush the paint on upside down..."
