This place rocks. The music threads are helpful, the posters are clever, and the people are friendy. The BS threads cover everything under the sun and a few things over the moon. I've been coming here for about a half year, and I still think it's the best site on the whole darn net. I've made some friends I'll probably never get to meet, but I know some of them really well. I've met some old friends and we have touched base again. I have come here looking for assiatance with various things (my ampersand, how to do this or that on the computer) and someone helped. Seen people on good and bad days, and things get straightened out. People have a sense of humour and a sense of fun.

So, what do you like about the 'cat?

It's the PEOPLE! They are so darned wonderful. It's an amazing mix of young and old, all three sexes, music lovers of every venue, singers WORLDWIDE!

I've connected with singers from Finland, Germany, England, all over America, Canada, on and on. I've connected, and re-connected, with new singers, and folksingers I knew many years ago. I've been able to keep in touch with previous friends that have moved away to distant places, but have not really left the community of singers and song lovers. (Hi Maggie).

I've been educated, and re-educated about music issues that are happening right now, in living time.

And the resource of the music files is awesome. Even more importantly is the resource of song lovers that are always ready and willing to help with any problem or search or question I have.

Shall I go on? (anyone 'wanna buy a car?) I get so excited about MUDCAT that I have to contain myself. Excuse me now, I have to go take a cold shower. See you later! CHEERS, Bob(deckman)Nelson

What do I like about Mudcat? For starters, the first two folks what posted to this thread (counting brucie.) I like the friendliness, and even the orneriness in here. I like the caring in here, most of everything... better then this joint as a source of lyrics, information and advice (called for and un-called for.)

It feels real in here.

Max called me this afternoon, and I really enjoyed the call. We had a nice, long chat, and it sounds like life is going well for him. Then he reminded me how old he is - exactly the same age as my firstborn son.

So, now he's going to call me "dad."
Thanks, "son," for all the good stuff you do for us.

A gentle suggestion: Let's move this out of the "BS" section. There ain't no "BS" here. Bob
Well, I think it's non-music information, Bob. It's one of those borderline cases, and I tend to leave the borderline threads where the originator put them.

Ain't no BS here? Well... There is now!

Ah don't much care for this Mudcat place muh-self. Sorta got here by mistake one day. Ya see, me an' muh brother Bill an' muh other brother Bill (muh Momma likes th' name "Bill") wuz out muddin' one day. Now, fer you city slickers 'at don't know 'bout it, muddin's when us country boys takes 'em big ole four-wheel-drive trucks with 'em big ole nobbly tires out where they's lotsa mud left after a rainstorm 'n we spin donuts 'n make a buncha noise 'n drink beer 'n jus' gen'ly raise hell until we either pass out or blow up a motor. Well, one day Ah blowed up th' motor in muh ole Chevy 'n we towed it back home 'n we'z thinkin' about where's we gonna get a 'nuther motor 'n muh other brother Bill says he knows where there's a Caterpiller bulldozer that we cud probly git th' motor out of. So that night we snuck over t' where th' highway boys wuz doin' some clearin' fer a new road 'n we snagged th' motor outta this big ole D-8 jus' as purty as yuh please. Tookit back home 'n took a cuttin' torch t' th' ole Chevy 'n somehow or 'nuther got thet big ole Cat diesel into it. Next day we fired thet mother up 'n run it on down t' the muddin' bog 'n, Ah'm gone tell yuh what, thet rig flat kicked ass. Muh brother Bill said that since it 'uz such a bad-ass truck we orta give it a name. So we thunk 'bout it fer a while 'n muh other brother Bill says that since it's fer muddin' 'n it's got a Cat motor in it we shud call it "Mudcat".

So, one day Ah's playin' roun' on this computer 'n Ah decided t' see if mebbe sumbody else had a truck like mine so I put "Mudcat" inta thet Google thang 'n next thang Ah know Ah'm here at this place. Now, Ah've got sum frens 'at pick 'em guitars 'n banjos 'n such so Ah thought Ah'd just check it out. Well, Ah'm gone tell yuh what, you's about a buncha wierd-ass damn people. Ah think a whole buncha yuh's Commnists 'r sumthin. Always bad-mouthin' th' Prezdent. 'N halfa yuh's ferners 'uh some kind. Allus talkin' 'bout some places called "Hull" 'n "Twillingsgate". What th' shit's 'at all about? 'N 'at Spaw character. Always fartin' 'n sayin "fuck" right out in public. 'N what in th' double-dee hell is a Shatner?

Ah tell ya, you people is sumthin' else. Ah jus' keep cummin' back t' see whut you weird-ass sumbitches is gonna do next.

By th' way. There's some feller hangin' 'round here purtendin' t' be me. Goes by th' name "Bruce". He ain't me. My Momma'd never give no son 'a hers a wimpy-ass name like "Bruce". Muh name's Bill, jus' like muh brothers. Ah told yuh Momma likes th' name "Bill".

I found it by accident looking up some song info. Never ever joined a chat room before either. I was made to feel welcome so I came back.

I have found a great bunch of mostly open minded people from whose threads I have been learning a lot and whose collective knowledge is astounding.

Now I wake up and before I start work I visit the room and meet with some really great people. Sort of sets me up for the day.

Though I can go to the pub for a beer, a session and a chat; Mudcat keeps me connected as we foreigners are a distinct minority here in China.

I look forward to meeting some of the UK catters on a visit in June/July.

What don't I like; Its too bloody adictive!

It's an eclectic mix of snot faced knowitalls, proper musicians and total lunatics.

I like it here because it's cheaper than booking into a psychiatric hospital and someone will always talk with me, even if it is just to tell me how fat my arse is.

Let me count the ways.
I love thee with the length and width of my keyboard.
I love thee with all the strings of my guitar...

Yea thou I walk in the valley of the shadow of 'pop'
I shall fear no Brittney,
for thou art with me
thy lyrics and thy rodents they comfort me...

Snot Faced Know-it-Alls , Proper musicians , and Total Lunatics ??

That more or less covers it Liz - The only problem is I am NOT a proper Musician, and I dont think I am a TOTAL lunatic. Does that mean I am one of the Snot Faced Know-it-Alls ?

Better not ask for an answer to that on !!!

Keep it down the non-music section, Joe. BS stands for all kinds of things as well as bullshit, and it's just a historical accident that the label has got attached to this end of the forum. I think that people who just rigidly stick to the music end miss an awful lot of good stuff. (As well as a good lot of awful stuff...)

I think the Mudcat makes it worth having the Internet even on its own. Thanks to the people who make it that way, and keep it that way.

It's that subtle air of weirdness that emanates from the computer every time the Mudcat is up... it's being able to post to a site where at least some of the readers might know what "emanates" means... it's getting information about everything you could ever need to know about the world of Nearly Acoustic... it's talking about guitars with people you will probably never meet (but would like to)... it's the enthralling adventures of rodents, chimps, penguins, manatees and campers at Drumcree... it's a bunch of asskickin' Nixonite rednecks mixed up with hairy-armpitted dykes, beardy-weirdy folkniks, sailors, cat-lovers, dog-lovers, Shatner-lovers, sex fiends, people who sing with fingers in the ear, bodhran owners and squatters under the porch. It's more real than real life, sometimes...

Damage the cynicism gland...yeah, right.

I came here lookin' for some lyrics and sort of stuck around. Then I moved out here to Idaho and had my consciousness raised, so now I know exactly what this place is full of:

weirdo commie hippy fascist neoconservative warmongering socialistic song-singing lyric-writing gun-toting antihunting carnivore vegan republican liberal tory democratic tax-and-spend knee-jerk devil-worshiping fundamentalist Buddha-thumping stupid dope-using pagan christian anarchistic agnostic feminist pacifists!

And that's just for a start, too!

I happen to like folks like that.

Mudcat is simply one of the best 'sources' I know...of music, of banter, of knowlege of LOTS of stuff, of ideas, of escape, of togetherness, and of fascinating nonsense
...it's a window to parts of the world I'll never see, and a guide to things I never knew I need to know until I came here. I was one of the first 20-30 people to post here, over 7 years ago, and it was a great place until 'spaw let loose with his first gaseous emission!...and strangely, it remained great even after!

I have met folks I bever would have known otherwise, and some of them...(about 15-20 so far) have stayed at my house when in the area...

Kinda changes you to add that much good, new stuff to life at my age!

Well, I like what is going to be as the internet becomes more of a wonder... Instead of jumping on an Airplane to stand in Victoria Station and play a tune for McGrath... I see a time when we will go into our wee internet room and there will be the whole crowd... shooting the BS around e-tables, over e-beer and listening to the Cat who is on the e-stage, and even smelling the gas from Spaw who is eating e-beans and singing raunchy songs... giving an e-handshake at the end of the big arguement with good friends on opposite sides of the concerns of the day... sort of like the Holodeck on Star Trek... speed the day. Why does it work?.....can only believe it is the music.......we all share a common love for it.....though we might differ is hundreds of other ways....we all have that love for the music and because of it we have a language to share and comunicate with.

I realized today that I 'know' more people on the Mudcat than I do in real life. I think it would be impossible to ask a question on the 'cat and not get an answer. One afternoon--acting on a childish impulse--I posted a ! with nothing else. Within 24 hours there were over 30 or 40 posts relating to everything from William Shatner to lingerie that I suspect someone in a certain largest Canadian province keeps in a special drawer for the blow-up dolls. This place is crazy, but good crazy.

For everyone with thoughts on folk or blues
For those who feel isolated in a world of pop
For them wanting to discuss recent news
Or simply wanting to blow their top
If they want the words to archaic tunes
Or to know where they can go to perform
If they're under the influence of dubious fumes
(This seems to happen often - most people blame Spaw)
For those who can debate with equal strength
Twelve-string guitars, Shatner and freds.

Come all but be warned, there's no turning back
From the creeping insidious joy of Mudcat.

I think I found Mudcat in one of the strangest ways. A simple search on Google (I can't remember what for) and I found myself on the Mother of all BS Threads. A bizarre introduction, but I decided to stick around to make sure that none of those people lived near me!
It was definitely worth it - I've discovered a whole community that I had no idea existed.

I guess I like it because it is quirky and utterly out of control. Then every once in a while some post makes sense. I suppose it kinda that human nature of liking things in contrast -- we like the summer most in the coldness of winter. Diamonds show off best against the blackest background.

I arrived with the intention of finding information about songs and stayed when I found kindred spirits who have now become good friends. I also like the "out of control" aspect and the strange mix of content. Mudcat is my first contact with humans for the day, not counting the kiss I give my True-love who is always still asleep when I get up. Joy Joy Joy

Look at it this way:

Where else are you going to find the collection of people represented on the 'cat. We have folks with great humour (who will sidetrack to a discussion of humour vs humor), get into a debate or screaming match about mid-East politics, come to the emotional rescue of someone they were just fighting with over anything that requires their assistance, debate in depth and detail--with scholarship that would be accepted by any university in the world--then return to laugh at Spaw farting on the world wide web. The finest details of folklore are addressed, and people will get into research over whether the song could have taken place where it did because they didn't have that type of dress in the period talked about in the song. Folks will argue for their local beer because it is not only good, but essential to the existence of life as we know it, move to single malt as opposed to mixed, worry or not about spelling or punctuation, state their mind (or what's left of it) and move on. There is a gentility here that is often NOT found in the 'real' world. Someone above said that the music brings us closer, and I think that's right. However, I also think that special types of people get attracted to music in the first place, and so maybe that's got something to do with it.

We have people who have seen aspects of life no one should ever have to witness; we have people who care deeply for those around them, and who really do see the world as a global community. We have scholars who freely share their hard-won knowledge and skills. And I love the fact that there's no question that's too silly. I love the respect--some of it grudging--that's accorded William Shatner--and, it don't get much better than that.

William Shatner!! He's pathetic -- a windbag, a puffy old has-been with bad habits on stage and off, half out of his mind with ineptitude and the discomfort tyhat comes from perpetrating it. He's a foolish crumbled icon, a hlaf-baked wannabe has-been who is over the hill when he should be under it.

people & words!

There are some great people here - some I knew before joining (Bob Bolton who got me here, JennyG, Bruce from Bathurst, Canberra Chris, Alison, Callie, Chicky), some I encouraged to join (JennyO, freda), some I'll probably never meet (Giac), some I've met & others I will be meeting (Charley Noble, Naemanson, Moses, Bill/stables, El Greko), some who inspire me (Art Thieme, Jerry Rassmussen) - the list goes on

and the wordsmiths! I have always had creative friends (dollmakers, embroiderers, lacemakers, woodwrkers - people who created with their hands) but never known people who created with words - songwriters & wordsmiths. One of my collagues enjoys words as much as I do & I often send threads to him to share the laughter & wit (asterism is the new euphemism!)

As has been said above, Mudcat is addictive, however it's much better than any other addiction (well, maybe the chocolate lovers would say otherwise, but I don't have a sweet tooth)

In one word Mudcat is a community.

sandra

oh, I forgot the Digital Tradition, and the Mudcat CDs.

More than the vast amount of knowledge available here I particularly appreciate the helpfulness of people who are eager to share that knowledge. It even compensates for those OT threads that sometimes leave me wondering if we all live on the same planet.

I discovered Mudcat after my wife met an old singing friend of ours who mentioned it.
As someone else said i'ts addictive!
I look every day for the threads that interest me, and usually find something that I can comment on.
The great thing is, the originator of the thread can be on the other side of the world, or just in the next village, it doesn't matter, we all have the same interest in keeping the music flowing.
Great stuff!

What I like is the brilliant interface of the forum/discussion board, where threads are brought to the top of a discrete list according to the most recent post, even if the thread was otherwise dead as of long ago. This design must exist elsewhere, but I have never seen it (I don't get around to forums much.) If anyone has seen a better design I'd be interested in taking a look at it.

I LIKE CATS.

Jaysus, someone said that girls think guys who like cats are cool, suave, hot, sensitive, like that. So, how come I don't get any lacivious messages? Where are the girls who like guys-who-like-cats? I'm waiting for three more days. If I don't get any blatant signals, then screw the cats. I'll send them to the 'shoot the damn cat' game. You know, the sick humour thread, which by the way I think is really sick for only three more days.

I LIKE CATS.

Other forums I am on do something similar - but I think the 'cat does it best.

The search facilities are the best I have run across on any bulletin board/forum. For all the foibles and quirks (and we all know the searches have them) I get better more consistant results with the searches on the cat then I do on any other site I've frequented.

I hereby declare the following: Being of somewhat sound mind and body (OK, the mind's a little shaky and the body isn't anything to write home about so I'll start again): Being alive and breathing, and having received NO offers from ladies who are supposed to think that when a guy says he like cats that he's sensitive and all, I hereby declare that CATS CAN SCREW OFF!

I'm with Mmario about "the brilliant interface " - it seem so simple and works so well, it must be devilish cleverly constructed. And not flashy, which a mercy. (Alright we have the crashes, but that's down to something else, poverty).

I've never come across anything comparable - compared to the Mudcat everything seems clunky, and I've looked. I mean, they needn't necessarily be about folk music - in principle any strong shared interest can be the glue for an online community. There've been quite a few threads where people have suggested other forums that exist, but they never even begin to measure up when it comes to the type of stuff Mmario mentioned.

And that's leaving aside the content and the people you come across, and the stuff other people have talked about in the thread. Once more, thanks everyone. (And confusion to the people who buzz in from time to time with the intention of trying to screw things up - though, I dunno, maybe even they have a role in helping us learn to recognise the traps and the pitfalls that could wreck the place.)

I had a dog named Ginger who would look for 'love' anywhere. Horniest animal I ever met. He was a stray that showed up one day, stayed for a year and disappeared. You would not believe what that mongrel tried to do to furniture, cars, anything that would stay still for longer than a few seconds. I watched him one day take a whiz on a tree, begin to saunter away, and then as an afterthought, he went back to the tree and--I will allow the reader to imagine the rest. Cats were afraid of him not because he barked--he didn't have a mean streak in him--but because he had a look in his eye when he chased after them. I don't know what eventually became of him, but odds are that he died happy.
