Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: Linda Mattson Date: 01 Oct 00 - 07:38 PM Hello, I'm catching a ride to the gathering with Bill Sables and Company (thanks, Bill), and they are planning to camp. I'm looking for a bed and won't have a sleeping bag. Bron, can you help with suggestions? Would any of the London Mudcatters have room for one going back, dropping me off somewhere, Bill suggested Wiltshire? I was thinking of visiting Stonehenge. I'll have a medium size suitcase, small bag and a fiddle. Are there any odd things we should bring to Llanstock? Thanks, and see you soon, Linda from Portland, Oregon |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: Noreen Date: 01 Oct 00 - 09:06 PM Bring your waterproofs, Linda and several changes of dry clothes!! :0) Noreen |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: KingBrilliant Date: 02 Oct 00 - 05:41 AM I've got my car now (after a three month wait!), but Mark is iffy as to whether he wants to come now (typical!!), so I might be coming down on my own (with the dog for company). I'll probably sleep in the car (I can pretend its just a squished down camper van). If Mark & Amoret come then we'll bring a tent & worry about the details when we get there. Looking forward to it..... kris |

Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: sian, west wales Date: 02 Oct 00 - 06:21 AM Bron, Would it be possible to summarize where everyone will be at what time and when? Like, I'll be booking in at Pippins around ... 5.30ish on Friday. Where would I find people then? I guess everyone will be arriving at different times, so might need to know this sort of thing... sian |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: GUEST,micca at work. Date: 02 Oct 00 - 07:09 AM Sian, I would reckon a safe bet would be the pub****BG*** |

Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: Llanfair Date: 02 Oct 00 - 12:28 PM I'll be at the Red Lion from lunchtime on the Friday, so if people would like to make it their first port of call, I can give directions and stuff. Lucky I'm not a drinker, all afternoon and evening is a long time. I'll take my knitting!!!! I'll be checking that everyone's got somewhere to sleep during the week, as we now have 23 members definitely coming, and with spouses, friends etc, plus people who decide to come at the last minute, plus local musicians, there's going to be quite a crowd!!!! Cheers, Bron. (good job I'm feeling better!!!) |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 02 Oct 00 - 01:45 PM Have a great time - I'm afraid I can't see that I will to be able to make it myself, but I'll be thinkiong ofbyou. Especially since I've just checked, and October 14 is the first anniversary of the first time I posted on the Mudcat, so it's sort of my Mudcat birthday. |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: Linda Kelly Date: 02 Oct 00 - 05:00 PM Will be thinking of you all . Sorry I can't come- I will make a mudcat gathering eventually! I have to work that weekend but compensation is that I am going to see Colum Sands in the evening. |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: GUEST,Sam Pirt Date: 03 Oct 00 - 10:58 AM Hi I am getting a lift with Bill Sables, the kind man he is!! I would be going to the Colum Sands concert but I'm not. NO, I'm off to THE GATHERING and I am really looking forward to it the tunes, songs, dances etc... roll on Llanstock Cheers Sam |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: KingBrilliant Date: 03 Oct 00 - 11:41 AM Looks like Mark, Amoret & I will be arriving sometime on Saturday morning. Will worry about accomodation when we get there, else will sleep in the car. Dog still undecided! REALLY looking forward to it now that I've convinced Mark he needs to come. Only possible fly in the ointment is that Amoret is quite ill with an infection, and is on her third course of antibiotics. X-fingers she'll be OK by Llanstock-time though. Kris |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: KingBrilliant Date: 03 Oct 00 - 11:52 AM PS. Amoret's infection is not an infectious one (if that makes sense). Its a bacterial thing..... We won't be spreading anything. Kris |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: Llanfair Date: 03 Oct 00 - 02:37 PM I'm glad you can all come, we'll sort out somewhere warm for Amoret to sleep, I'm sure. Cheers, Bron. |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: Liz the Squeak Date: 04 Oct 00 - 02:24 AM Amoret is human? Animal? Both??? (I have a child, I know of what I speak) There may be room with us going back, but even better would be getting into Morticia's good books, as she actually lives not too far away from Wiltshire. LTS

Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: sian, west wales Date: 04 Oct 00 - 04:27 AM Oooo, Bron, do you knit??? I'm having the devil's own time working out how to shape a heel in a sock (I'm sure the bl**dy pattern's wrong!) so if I bring it will you set me straight (or turned, in this case) ?? sian |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: Linda Mattson Date: 04 Oct 00 - 06:06 AM Hello, Pippins and the Red Lion were full (except for the caravan at Pippins), but I just booked a room at the Bryn Teg? B&B. She said she has plenty of rooms. The number is 01938 810535. I think it is outside Llanfair, so I'll need to figure out transportation. I wonder if there is a bus? Looking forward to meeting everyone, -Linda from Portland, Oregon, US |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: KingBrilliant Date: 04 Oct 00 - 06:10 AM Amoret is, as you suspect, a bit of both!! Actually, she's our 9yr old daughter - also known as Omlette because that is the closest approximation for Japanese friends & relations. The dog is Noni. Noni is the more sensible of the two. Kris PS. That knitting business is a bit scarey isn't it? I made a jumper once, but only out of straight bits (and I didn't bother with sleeves). I can do straight bits in Tunisian crochet as well & that's great fun. I think I'll play to my strengths though & stick to straight bits. I stand in awe of the turners of heels!
|
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: sian, west wales Date: 04 Oct 00 - 06:39 AM Make that ... Would-Be-Turner-of-Heels. I've only done it once, successfully. And I use the word, Successfully, loosely. Strictly speaking, I think you have to do it twice to be truly successful, at least with socks. sian |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: KingBrilliant Date: 04 Oct 00 - 07:25 AM So what happened to the other sock? Personally, I think I'd be better off cutting off my heels so that I could make socks out of straight bits. Or, and here is a stroke of genius I believe, how about knitting a sock out of straight bits but cunningly leaving a slit for the heel. Then you could put it on and darn the heel whilst it were on the foot (needs considerable bodily flexibility I admit) - resulting in a perfectly fitting and tailored sock (or two). Kris |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: Skipjack K8 Date: 04 Oct 00 - 07:51 AM Perhaps we could have a darning workshop. Anybody remember darning? I'm still in denial about my all-in-one 1950 knitted swimming costume. How could my parents have done that to me, and take a bloody picture! It has just struck me, finally, after 39 years, I was sodding well dressed up in a knitted GIRLY swimming costume. Therapy beckons. Skipjack |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: Margaret V Date: 04 Oct 00 - 08:13 AM Bron, it's entirely probable that the answer to this question is lodged somewhere in the earlier threads, but as I am too lazy to sift through all 200 or more posts, I'll ask anyway: will any of Llanstock be heard via HearMe, perhaps in the concert room? Those of us who will be resignedly stuck somewhere other than the center of the musical universe during the gathering would be glad for a chance to hear some of the festivities.... again, sorry if this has already been asked and answered. Best, Margaret |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: sian, west wales Date: 04 Oct 00 - 08:39 AM Kris, the other sock was fine, just different. So I now have two socks to use for Christmas Stockings. Believe it or not, there's a pattern in the book for a sock with a replace-able sole. (I think there's a philosophical point to be made there somewhere...) Skippy, I remember darning with great pleasure. I quite enjoyed it. No point these days; these mixed fibre socks aren't worth ... well ... a darn. The swimming suit point embraces several possible interpretations of thread creep... How to return to subject? So ... is someone at Llansock (sic) gonna help me with m' heels or not? I remember seeing an engraving once of a woman (19thC) walking to market from Tregaron to Aberystwyth with two baskets of produce to trade, a pig on a lead, and knitting as she walked. Good knitters could apparently knit one sock going to Aber. and the other coming back. Then they sold them to itinerant traders who sold them to men working in the iron mills of Merthyr Tydfil. Bet they sang, too. Bingo, back on topic! sian |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: Llanfair Date: 04 Oct 00 - 11:48 AM Nice one Sian, a well-crafted thread creep control!!!! Margaret, I think Hearme is out because there is no phone connection in the Institute. We are planning to record the highlights on CD for posterity, and I'm borrowing my sister's camcorder so we can send a video to Max for the radio. It would appear that the accommodation is now full. If you need somewhere to sleep when you get here, please contact me, because some B&B places are miles from anywhere. I have a list of people who can offer accommodation. Cheers, Bron. |

Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: Llanfair Date: 06 Oct 00 - 09:45 AM I'm glad you did that, I was beginning to think it was all a dream!!!!! Cheers, Bron. PS,The Gathering has been featured in the local papers. They have this deal, you see, where I write an article, proper spelling, punctuation and everything, then they change it around and then print it!!!! I've kept copies!! |

Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: Liz the Squeak Date: 07 Oct 00 - 03:22 AM Only a week to do and both cars are on the critical list.... the good one died last night and the rackety old banger is playing up - the car isn't so good either!!! Grrr grrr. Hope the AA knows where Llanfair is........ LTS |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: Catrin Date: 07 Oct 00 - 04:59 AM Liz - my thoughts are with you on this day of great stress and anxt. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. Cheers, Catrin |

Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 07 Oct 00 - 05:44 PM Have a good time anyway - and here is a site with a map - you can zoom in and out. The arrow in the middle is set on "Inn" - would that be the Red Lion?

Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: Liz the Squeak Date: 07 Oct 00 - 05:50 PM Huzzah! Racketty old banger has fixed the..... no sorry, that should be the racketty old banger is still not well but the other car has been fixed!! No, we haven't had it taken to the vets, although judging by the last but one mechanics that fixed mine, they couldn't have made a worse job..... it has had a new elastic band and the wick in the engine has been replaced, so we will not have to a) suffer a train journey of longer than 20 mins with the bratling, b) suffer a train journey with the LFU for longer than 20 mins or c) have to scrounge a lift from Welshpool..... 5 days and counting..... should we bring our thermals/wetsuits?? LTS |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: Llanfair Date: 09 Oct 00 - 03:46 AM Thanks for the map, McGrath. I don't know where the arrow is pointing, but there's no pub there!!! I'll post directions later. Glad the car is fixed, Liz, and your question about wetsuits has prompted me to put the following proposal (no, not that sort!!!!) Would the people planning on camping in tents please consider sharing the 8 berth caravan at Pippins. It was raining, it is raining, and it's going to rain for the forseeable future. Just let me know, and I'll let Julia and Jim know. Cheers, Bron. |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: KingBrilliant Date: 09 Oct 00 - 05:22 AM Hi all. We've got organised and looked at a map now - makes it all seem more exciting (especially as its a really simple route). Someone tried to break into the car the other night, so its gone on holiday to its granny's drive for a week so that we can be SURE of it still being around for Saturday morning!!! (and then.... Mark will just have to clear out the garage for it). Amoret has taken possession of the boot (her 'foxy hole') and is desperate to sleep in there. Its not as cruel as its sounds - the seats go down so she can get in & out - and the boot is huge. See you all soon.... Kris |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: Skipjack K8 Date: 09 Oct 00 - 05:23 AM Just seen the forecast, Bron! Caravan with seven other bodies looks eminently more appealing than bailing out the tent, so yes, please put me down for a berth. Thanks for all the work. How many years before we can beatify (yes, the sainting process) you for the Mudcat sainthood. I take it, Wales being Wales, you already have a St Bronwyn, but perhaps we could suggest you for one of these people's peerages, Lady Bronwyn of Llanfair? I take it Mudcat T Shirt and Tig & Badger Badge are de rigeur. Skipjack |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: bill\sables Date: 09 Oct 00 - 08:36 AM Sam Pirt, Patrich, and myself are allready booked in to the caravan at Pippins, Thanks for the weather warning Bron Skipjack Is there realy room in the village let alone a caravan for two accordion players. I suppose it would be OK if you both promise not to play Jimmy Shands greatest hits all night. Cheers Bill |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: Skipjack K8 Date: 09 Oct 00 - 10:10 AM Bill, Jimmy Shand's all I know, and you know it! Skipjack |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: Llanfair Date: 09 Oct 00 - 11:03 AM You must have done that quickly, Bill, because when I spoke to Julia last, no-one had booked the caravan. Sorry for the crossed lines!!! There are still plenty of spaces in people's houses, and floor space at the Red Lion. Cheers, Bron. |
Subject: RE: Countdown to Llanstock From: Liz the Squeak Date: 09 Oct 00 - 05:52 PM If I hear even a line of Jimmy Shand, I'm hitchin' that caravan to the nearest lake! Which, if it keeps on raining, could well be village hall!! Have we got lots of wet weather games to play? Should I bring a mah jong set? Dominoes?? Charades??? LTS - who is trying desperately to remember where her wellies are - and I better not catch cold, I have to sing for the BBC the following Tuesday!!
