Just read Merle Travis's autobiography. I'll miss him. Also Willie Nelson.

If anything happened to Buffy Sainte-Marie, I would feel pretty upset about it, but I have the impression she will be around for a long time yet.

One of the great things about technology (as opposed to so many miserable things about it) is the fact that performances can be accurately recorded, so in a sense we will always have most of the people listed above, many of them in startlingly wonderful filmed performances. I'm thinking particularly of an Elvis Presley performance I saw several years ago on public television: Elvis, a bass player, and his drummer pounding on a guitar case in a small studio. Elvis was dressed in jeans and some kind of shirt--normal, everyday clothes unlike the pimp suits he wore on stage, sitting in a chair playing accoustic guitar and singing quietly to a small group sitting around. It had the feel of a house concert...the guy could flat out sing as well as anybody anywhere when he didn't have to shout over an orchestra.

I'll have to agree, though, that tape or film or vinyl or CDs, while valuable, will never replace live concerts--I saw Tom Paxton about eight years ago, unforgettable. And the Dry Branch Fire Squad and the Austin Lounge Lizards, Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum, I'd like to have those performances on film or DVD, but I wouldn't trade the memory of them live for the record.

Since the question was asked in the future tense, I immediately thought of people who are getting old--Doc Watson was the first. Pete Seeger, of course. Last weekend I saw Earl Scruggs playing with Bela Fleck and his bluegrass group. Earl will be missed, and thank God for Bela. I saw Ralph Stanley a few years ago...is he still alive? David Grissman was playing with him. A great concert...Ralph, at his advanced age, was still picking as fast as anybody; the banjo was getting a bit heavy for him, so after a few numbers he passed it to his son (and later auctioned it off).

But, to add a couple of names to the list of the dearly missed, past tense: Maybelle Carter, Cisco Houston, Phil Ochs, Nat Cole, Paul Robeson, Peggy Lee, Jesse Fuller...

Stevie Ray - Was 'Riviera Paradise' a glimpse of things to come?

Rory Gallagher - IMHO the best Blues man from that side of the pond.

John Lennon - The reason I have this obsession.

Oh, and Neil Yo.. Oops Bad Karma. Bad BAD Karma!

Yeah, Rory. What a talent. I had the opportunity to see him live once. I have to agree with Dear Hubby's assessment.

Bat Goddess or Curmudgeon may add information, but Alan Francis, Paul McNeil was last reported (a few weeks ago) living in California and still doing music. He'd been in the Filipines prior to that.

There are too many I miss. A couple have already been mentioned. I traveled a great deal, and couldn't always find folkies where I lived. I loved Ewan McColl's music, and when I reconnected with folkes in the mid-80's, was very sad to learn he'd died. I only know him from recordings. I saw Peter Bellamy in the 70's, and always thought I'd get another chance. I learned of his death several years after it happened.

It's painful to think of those alive now being lost. If I never had the chance to see Dick Gaughan, the Watersons/Carthys in any combination, Maddy Prior, ...damn, there are so many. I really would have liked to hear the Battlefield Band when Davey Steele was with them.

Already gone:
The Grateful Dead
Jim Croce
new one; Gov't Mule (Bassist Allen Woody just passed away)
Janis Joplin
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Arcady, I don't think any of them have passed on but haven't heard of them doing anything new in a while

Will miss:
Doc Watson
Alman Bros
Altan, though that doesn't look to be anytime soon, Buiochas le Dia!

I could go on all day, but I won't.

It's over twenty years since I heard Bill Boazman sing "The Worm Forgives The Plough", "Roll On River", "Breaking Even" and the immortal "Bless These Children". Oh for a nice pint of bitter, a small folk club and some good company to hear that wonderful music with again...

Why do banjo pickers have to have a banjo that is as heavey as a bucket of hog livers? With the sound systems of today, a much lighter banjo should work just as well?? comments??

I posted earlier but was 'Anonymous Guest' because my cookie had died again !!

sledge I was the guest right before your post. I'm halfway through the Sandy Denny biography. For years I've wanted to give her a hug and say thanks, now I want to give her a hug and just say It'll be OK.

Here are the lyric to Dave Cousins song for Sandy

Ringing Down the Years

We met when you were still a girl
In nineteen sixty eight
You wore a white dress and a hat
I touched the hand of fate
Your sweet voice took my breath away
Your smile lit up your face
You still had both feet on the ground
I was out in space

That certain sadness in your eyes
The secret of your smile
I've carried all these memories
Down many's the weary mile
And every time I hear your name
My eyes moist up with tears
As every word you ever sang
Comes ringing down the years.

We sat and talked the whole night long
Of all our rights and wrongs
Of mutual acquaintances
We sang each other's song
You were with me when the morning broke
The birds refused to sing
They knew when they were beaten
They hid beneath their wings.

I was in a Cleveland hotel room
When they telephoned the news
I drowned my sorrow all night long
The Southern Comfort blues
The show went on to great applause
Choking back the tears
As every word you ever sang
Came ringing down the years.

I reached out for the hourglass
To turn it face about
But who knows where the time goes
When your time is running out
I know someday we'll meet again
And I know just what I'll find
You'll have taught the angels how to sing
Georgia - Georgia on my mind.

I'll have to second Liz The Squeak's choice of Mozart, for two readsons. For one, there would have been so much more great music composed by him if he lived longer, it staggers the mind to imagine it. Secondly, as Liz said, his music would have matured more. His late quartets show a hint of the advances he was starting to make, and he would have been a tremendous influence on further classical music development. I miss the Bothy Band. They're all alive and performing music, but that special mix when they were together is missed. As one who loves pipe music as well, Pipe Major G.S. McLennan was a great and prolific composer of highland pipe tunes, a child prodigy, and a pure genius. He died at age 45. There would have been a lot more great tunes entering the repertoire of Celtic musicians - not just of pipers - had he lived longer. I wish John Lennon would have been around for a real Beatles reunion. I wonder what other gems Woody Guthrie would have come up with.

Wesley, I have more on Fred Neil. I was wrong. He is not in Cali, but is actually in Florida. Unfortunately, I was roght about his music. My friend says he has been reclusive and doesn't do it anymore. My friend doesn't know why. He was involved in a - save the dolphins project - a while back, but he just lives now. My friend did say, however, that he is still writing. So who knows. maybe he'll be back.

Speaking of people we'll miss, what's a good introductory album for Harry Chapin? Is there a "greatest hits" type album, that's NOT live, that includes 30k lbs of bananas, taxi, cat's cradle, and WOLD? I must have at least those 4 songs, and would prefer the studio version at this point, although I'm willing to be talked out of that if y'all say his live stuff is much better than the studio versions.

Thanks!

Bob Marley. Patsy Cline. I don't like country music at all, but I *love* Patsy Cline. And I miss the Pheremones, though I *think* they may actually still be together...you just don't hear anything anymore.

Is Tom Lehrer still alive? If not, that's a big loss.

Steve Goodman. Shel Silverstein. Very talented people with great insight into human nature.
