Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: Les from Hull Date: 02 Dec 08 - 07:00 AM It was nice! |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: GUEST,Pips Date: 05 Dec 08 - 06:33 PM Black Boy session is always a vibrant do - instruments and voices alike! This Mondays Black Boy sesh was good (some good Yorkshire trad carol singing towards the end... Fab!) Looking forward to the Welly session this Sunday 7th Dec afternoon :) |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: Les from Hull Date: 20 Mar 09 - 03:05 PM Latest news is - we could be losing the Black Boy as a pub. The current landlord is giving up the license as he can't make it pay, and the owners - Enterprise Inns - won't let him make any changes to make the place more profitable, or sell him the leasehold. Another great pub and one that has hosted folk music sessions for over 30 years will soon close. Damn you, Enterprise Inns! |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: Les from Hull Date: 23 Mar 09 - 01:15 PM It seems that this news has not been the bombshell that I thought it would be. Oh well! |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: GUEST,Teg Date: 23 Mar 09 - 01:52 PM Oh no! Just seen this for the first time. That's a real shame. I really enjoyed the last session there in the front bar, and was hoping for more to come. Any more news on if the closure's definitely going ahead, and when? Teg |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: GUEST,cookieless bloke Date: 23 Mar 09 - 04:11 PM Will it just close? It seems strange they would let a premises like that stand idle, costing money. Maybe a new, folk-orientated owner will take it over, with free beer for the musos, sushi and oysters for free snacks and a free bus at the end of the night.... Ok, let's make the best of it, see you two weeks today. Or is closure more imminent? Lawrie |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: Les from Hull Date: 23 Mar 09 - 06:33 PM Five weeks is about all we've got, bloke! So it seems that the next session (Monday April 6th 8pm) could very well be the last in the Black Boy. Unless, that is, someone wants to take over the lease. Otherwise it will stand as an empty monument to changing drinking patterns, the credit crunch, the smoking ban, property companies who are ruining our pubs, whatever. So we may very well have a discussion as to where we will move the session to. If we want to stay in the Old Town we could ask at the George in Land of Green Ginger, which is also run by Dean, who provides all those nice snacks we have at the Black Boy. It's a nice old coaching inn, with one of the best addresses in the country, and the smallest window anywhere in the known universe. Or the Wellington, where we go for the other two sessions. Additionally it will again transfer the Hull Elderly Gentlemen's Afternoon Binge Drinking Club. |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: Sttaw Legend Date: 24 Mar 09 - 05:33 AM Big shame excellent pub, lets hope someone takes over the lease, oldest pub in town I think and plenty of ghosts |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: theleveller Date: 24 Mar 09 - 06:07 AM That's very sad news. I used to drink there myself many years ago and, as the following clip from The Hull Packet and Advertiser March 7th 1834 shows, my family have been patrons of the pub for generations. The gentleman mentioned is my great x5 grandfather: "John Thompson Master of the Sloop Dunn was found drowned in the Old Harbour. The vessel was tied up at Chapel Lane staithe. George North publican of the Black Boy said the deceased had been in his pub worse for drink the previous night. He had been warned against returning to his boat, the night being so windy. His body was found in the Old Harbour having received a severe blow to the head. The body was removed to the Black Boy Public House. Verdict Accidental Death." At least they took him back to the pub - it was probably his round! |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: GUEST,Warpy Date: 24 Mar 09 - 07:37 AM Its a shame its a great pub. Les, I think Hessle would be a good place to move to. Bassic and I also approached the Hase when we set the session up. As all our young folkies seem to be in Hessle maybe we should restablish it at the Hase. |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: GUEST,Teg Date: 25 Mar 09 - 06:02 AM Not all surely? Maybe we could have two new sessions? (-: Teg x p.s. The Green Ginger sounds like a good idea to me |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: GUEST,Steve Date: 25 Mar 09 - 10:04 AM I remember having some very good nights in the Black Boy. Hope things work out ok. The pub Les mentioned, "The George" down The Land Of Green Ginger, has also had some very good music sessions in upto about 3 years ago. Would be good to have them going in there again and the real ale is excellent. |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: GUEST, Sminky Date: 25 Mar 09 - 10:46 AM Bleeding 'ell, not another one. I spent many a long boozy evening in there. Where does this all end? Any more news about the Minerva, by the way? |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: GUEST,warpy Date: 26 Mar 09 - 06:03 AM Latest news seems to suggest that someone who has been involved with the pub in the past is taking it over. Maybe we will know more in April. Minerva was still closed when I walked past last week. What a shame.! |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: Les from Hull Date: 26 Mar 09 - 05:12 PM The Hull Elderly Gentlemen's Afternoon Binge Drinking Club founder members attended the Black Boy this afternoon and have to report that negotiations are still underway about the pub's future. We'll keep you all informed. |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: ossonflags Date: 27 Mar 09 - 03:31 AM I'll second that Brother Fromull!! |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: Les from Hull Date: 16 Apr 09 - 08:47 AM We spoke to Dean yesterday, and he is keeping the pub, so the Black Boy session will continue as before. At this moment there are plans for a slight repainting! |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: ossonflags Date: 17 Apr 09 - 08:23 AM Yes, 'tis great news indeed |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: GUEST,Teg Date: 01 Jun 09 - 10:52 AM So, now I've got my weeks sorted out, is anybody coming out for some tunes tonight? (: |

Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: GUEST Date: 24 Jul 09 - 06:05 AM The Hull Shanty thread says the Black Boy has shut. Is there any truth in the rumour? |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: GUEST,Joe Date: 24 Jul 09 - 08:11 AM Cant be true, as students, we spent enough money there to keep it going for at least 2 recessions. I was planning to come and investigate the session as well... |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: Les from Hull Date: 03 Aug 09 - 01:29 PM Black Boy is still closed, as far as we know, so there's no session there until further notice. If it stays closed we could consider asking the Minerva, when that reopens. Good Real Ale, view of the Humber, nice room (the former micro-brewery), entry in the Guinness Book of Records, plenty of parking... Of course, it will depend on the landlord but I'm sure the extra takings on a Monday night will help his balance sheet. |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: Bloke in the Corner Date: 03 Aug 09 - 02:25 PM Pippa phoned me tonight with the news. Any 'catters suffering session withdrawal symptoms welcome over the river at the Six Bells session in Barrow on Humber, every Tuesday, tomorrow (4th August) included. It's a very friendly mixed session, not at all cliquey, no bosses, just mutual respect and love of the music. Lawrie |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: Les from Hull Date: 07 Aug 09 - 12:16 PM The Black Boy will be open again very soon, and so the next first Monday session is safe. |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: ossonflags Date: 12 Aug 09 - 01:01 PM Latest update: me and Mr.Fromull have been doing some pretty intensive research at the Black Boy 'ull today. We are delighted to report that the BB is up and running under the very capable auspices of Adam the new gaffer. The quality of the real ale is excellant and varied. The new gaffer is well up for sessions on the first Monday of the month. |
Subject: RE: Black Boy Session From: Les from Hull Date: 13 Aug 09 - 09:04 AM He's also wondering if we wanted to add another session into the monthly cycle, possibly a Wednesday or a Thursday. I said I'd ask the others, so this is me asking! |
