Strange bagpipes in old woodcut

Subject: Stange bagpipes in old woodcut

There is a picture here of a rather strange looking set of pipes.
The one pipe over the shoulder seems to be a chanter, and the other drone is at the bottom
Would any bagpipe expert like to comment on whether they look plausible, or just inaccurate?

Drawn from life by somebody who doesn't know how to play them. Chanter + 2 drone pipes. Perfectly normal for ERnglish pipes.

Best not take such iconography at face value; it's a fine piece of work but very much a conceptual notion of a piper and his pipes than of an actual person and his instrument. That said, double chanters did exist in these islands, and many examples have been revived with great success; but the most famous example traditionally is the Italian zampogna, with both chanters in a common stock.

The artist obviously didn't have a clue. The chanter isn't used to bow the thing!

Although the player seems to be in a wrestling match, he might be playing a set of Marwood Double Pipes. Julian Goodacre has begun to replicate these.

The tune of the ballad may be heard on the Beggar Boy of the North, Greg Stephens and Crookfinger Jack(1978). Now reissued on Harbourtown HARCD051. Available on line, or from all good record shops. Just thought I'd mention that.

I would urge all music loving followers of this site to buy this excellent record it is full of brilliant tunes played ever so well. People could also get "A Trip to the Lakes" by The Boat Band, Greg and co by other means.
