Subject: RE: BS: Dial up in the UK From: gnomad Date: 28 Nov 08 - 02:11 PM I am assuming that you wish to move about (broadband now being as cheap or cheaper if just using one location). I haven't used dial-up for some years, but have recently been looking at possibilities for mobile access. There seem to be pay per minute deals, or this might work out cheaper depending on exact usage pattern. One advantage of both these services is that you don't sign up for them, just use them and if unhappy you can walk away free. Of course 3g mobile broadband is the coming thing according to the techno-wizards, prices are certainly falling, but coverage varies. Not for me yet, I think. PC world are touting various packages on their website and in store. Some of the mainstream ISPs still do a dial-up service linked to a particular line, but the last one with which I was happy (Virgin) now only offers such when linked to their phone service. Not what I am after at all, though maybe suits your case. All in all, I can't offer any real guidance, but would be interested to learn of your decision, and verdict later. |

Subject: RE: BS: Dial up in the UK From: Manitas_at_home Date: 01 Dec 08 - 08:23 AM Thanks chaps. I'm giving an old laptop to my mum but I don't suppose she'll want to go to all the expense of broadband before seeing how she gets on with it but I'm sure she''l want internet access after a while. |

Subject: RE: BS: Dial up in the UK From: Mr Red Date: 01 Dec 08 - 09:31 AM Waitrose they do an 0845 &/or 0844 number and you can pay by the minute or 15GBP per month. Webmail is functional and easy. I pay by the minute, and even running websites I average about 8GBP per month. You have to use at least once per 30 days this way. their anti-virus e-mail detection is first class and the telephone hotline is an 0800 number and they seem to know the answers to my questions and I only ring when I am really stumped. I also use UK2.net because my domain name and primary e-mail is hosted by them. The actual dial-up is dis-owned by UK2 and they refer you to Tiscali who cannot answer questions that don't include Braodband, they end-up sending blank e-mails which is netspeak for "end of subject". Pay them by the minute and I don't pay much to them I can tell you. |
