Subject: BS: Spy Trade From: Nick E Date: 08 Jul 10 - 11:15 PM I think we gave up too much for the Redhead. |
Subject: RE: BS: Spy Trade From: Joe Offer Date: 09 Jul 10 - 12:55 AM This article refers to the spy-to-be-swapped as "Sexy redhead Anna Chapman." This article says Chapman may not be a real redhead - a few months ago, she was a brunette. The article says, "Chapman, born Anya Kuschenko, was busted this week on charges she was spying for Russia -- as were nine other US residents." the UK papers publish pictures that make the spy look more like a model. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: Spy Trade From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 09 Jul 10 - 02:01 AM This story is not being covered by the Russian media. Some things do not change. |
Subject: RE: BS: Spy Trade From: Emma B Date: 09 Jul 10 - 06:47 AM As I can't read Russian I don't know what is being reported in Russia in Russian however ....... The Moscow News, which began publication in 1930, is Russia's oldest English-language publication newspaper. Many of its feature articles used to be translated from the now defunct Russian Moskovskiye Novosti; since 2007, the English version of The Moscow News is partially owned by Russian information agency RIA Novosti 'The paper is available or free at many business establishments in the Russian capital, and is sold in kiosks at prominent locations, such as Pushkin Square' On 7th July the online Moscow News reported that Spy swap mooted in Russia-US row |
Subject: RE: BS: Spy Trade From: Arnie Date: 09 Jul 10 - 07:45 AM Anna Chapman has said that she is determined to come back to the UK rather than live in Russia. I have an idea that she is a UK Cit from her earlier marriage to a Brit, in which case she can come and go as she pleases. No doubt various agencies will be keeping an eye on her but I don't think she poses the same sort of threat as the home-grown muslim fanatics who are keeping MI5 and the police busy these days. |
Subject: RE: BS: Spy Trade From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 09 Jul 10 - 07:46 AM Thanks Emma. I got my info from BBC TV news last night. The Moscow article does not give much of the story though. |
Subject: RE: BS: Spy Trade From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 09 Jul 10 - 08:02 AM One Russian state-run network has stayed with the story: Russia Today, the Kremlin's English-language news channel mainly distributed outside Russia. in Russia's largely state-controlled media, the story is mostly relegated to the back pages—when it appears at all. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704178004575351033461486698.html |
Subject: RE: BS: Spy Trade From: Emma B Date: 09 Jul 10 - 08:02 AM The coverage in the West and Russia has indeed been a contrast As the Wall Street Journal commented also on july 7th "On Russia's main national state-run television channels, the spy story led broadcasts only on the first day the news broke. The reports, delivered in a neutral manner, focused on official statements from Russia and the U.S. As both the Kremlin and the White House played down any impact from the scandal on relations, it faded from newscasts in Russia..... While tabloids in the U.S. and U.K. have been transfixed with salacious details of the glamorous life of Anna Chapman, one of the accused, only a few Russian outlets have followed those stories. Tvoi Den, one of Russia's raciest tabloids, ran semi-nude photos of Ms. Chapman but quoted a friend of the accused spy threatening to "punch in the face" Ms. Chapman's British ex-husband for releasing the pictures." and yes Keith - the rest of the article, which I know you can look up yourself, is as critical of the Russian media as you might imagine or even post! |
