Each of us has known kindred souls. They are those special persons who understand exactly how we feel and what we think and need. They seldom talk about it. Such relationships have no need for discussion. Their quiet companionship is balm to the spirit and enough without words. Wherever we are, we meet these special people who have known loneliness and have heard the empty echoes but have not let them spoil anything. They are what the Cherokee calls, a ga-li s gv ti tia. They are on the sunny side. Now they mark the way for us, telling us that life is good and we are going to do well -- what we really need to hear, we are not alone. Then, we can reach back and take someone else's hand to lead them across the lonely places.
- Joyce Sequichie Hifler: A Cherokee Feast of Days -

The monitor within my breast has taught me the will of the Great Spirit....
- Senachwine -

(from the same book)

Kat, absolutely spot on this one,To quote a friend in the same vein but slightly different" What if the entire purpose of your life this time is so that you could give the words of encouragement to a person who, on receiving them is changed, and goes on to change the world, Maybe you by a simple act, triggers the change in someone else that is far reaching but of which you will have no knowledge, and your act of kindness is a force of the Universe." Friendship of this shraed knowledge kind is what keeps me here at the Mudcat and makes the it so good, no other signals to confuse just "the unreduced honesty of the words" Micca

What if we don't want to get balm all over our spirit? Can't we be particular about what we want to get sticky?

Richard Brautigan wrote similar thoughts with less balm in his short story Pacific Radio Fire:

We were listening to rock and roll on his transistor radio and somberly drinking port. We were both in despair. I didn't know what he was going to do with the rest of his life either.

I took another sip of port. The Beach Boys were singing a song about California girls on the radio. They liked them.

Excellent Mama KatSW
It is so true how that kind of connection with another person is beyond words.
When I do experience a kindred spirit with another person, for a moment in time I feel like all the weight has been lifted off my shoulders. They seem to magically remove the troubling issues from my mind and toss them down the garbage shoot. The challenge I find is later on not to go rummage through the trash and retreave the garbage my friend so kindly disposed of for me.

Nothing like kindred spirits. I used to have one but I had to send him packing...just became too much. Nice fellow though...from down Winchester, Tennessee way. Knew a lot about charcoal and aging...name of Jack. Helluva spirit.

Spaw,

Time was when friends would return from Kentucky just full of spirit. Inside and out. They'd bring me this stuff sold only in the deep south and I'd say "Thanks!" A drink it uo here in the frozen north.

Now I see it everywhere I go. Funny but now I can get Rebel Yell any time I want it, it doesn't taste the same.

Don
