I have recently seen this sad message on Facebook from Roy Hardacre

'Just received the sad news that our great friend Joe Nicholson has sadly passed away after a short illness. He was a great supporter of our local folk clubs and loved to sing. He especially loved chorus songs that got audiences joining with gusto to "raise the rafters" He and Mo were also stalwarts of Whitby Folk Week and ran nightly singarounds for many years. First in The Plough till grumpy Humphrey banned live music in his pubs and latterly at The Rifle Club. Here are a couple of photos from hundreds that were taken over the years. The first was their (and our) first Whitby Folk week in 1982 at the afore mentioned Plough and the other is something of a mystery. As you can see I queried it with Joe and you can see his reply. He never did get back to me but it captures his sense of fun and is a reminder of all the great times and many laughs we had over the years. Joe you will be sadly missed by all your many friends. RIP.'

As Roy says Joe was a stalwart of the North and West Yorkshire folk scene, always friendly and welcoming and will be much missed. The singaround in the sky has gained another star RIP

Lovely chap and a really great singer.

As well as bumping into him at the Rifle Club sessions he came to Bedworth Festival and also appeared on some of the Zoom sessions from Saltburn. RIP Joe

Im so sad to hear this news, Joe was a genuine friend to a lot of us and will no doubt be organising singarounds with Maureen again in heaven. I attended 100s here in the Northern England and further afield and looked forward every year to seeing them at Whitby Folk Week. God Bless you Joe and RIP

A lovely and genuine Gentleman is very sense of the word. He and Mo worked tirelessly at hundreds, nay thousands, of sessions over the years. I am grateful that I knew him and proud that I could call him friend.

O dear sad news Joe G and Roy ~ I knew Joe and Mo many years and as has been said stalwarts of the sing arounds at a number of festivals but Whitby folk week a cert

No messing with Joe straight as a dye and encouraging to all

I must have known them both for over 40 years, Both of them were pleasant, welcoming people, They ran singarounds at SALTBURN AND WHITBY, they ran their singarounds in a totally inclusive fashion.RIP

Wow, great to see those pics of both Joe and Mo so young!
I didn't know them well but did attend their singing sessions in Whitby when I could. So sad to hear this news.
