Subject: Has anyone recorded 'Gasoline?'
From: rogerontheoldtraps
Date: 17 Sep 05 - 03:19 PM

Slim Chance & the Survivors have long performed a song titled "Gasoline" (which Slim often attributes to David Bromberg) which says in part,

"She's got eyes like crystal water
       Lips like ruby wine
       A body like fine brandy
       And a soul like turpentine

Oh, Ma, she treats her daddy
so damn mean (so damn mean)
       When I ask for water
       She brings me gasoline..."

Is there a recording of this song available by anyone? I haven't found a recording of it by Bromberg, perhaps he does it in his live act.

Lonesome Dave's Lovesick Blues? It is recorded. Have to get my records out and stop recording cassettes to CD at the moment.

Jugband Song by David Bromberg

Well she's got eyes like crystal waters
Lips like sherry wine,
A body like fine brandy and a soul
Like turpentine.

Oh, Mama,
You treat your daddy so damn mean,
When I ask for water,
She brings me gasoline,
She brings me gasoline.

I say watch out now mama,
Don't you treat big David bad,
You don't watch your step
You're bound to make big David mad.

Oh, Mama,
You treat your daddy so damn mean,
Now,when I ask for water,
She brings me gasoline,
She brings me gasoline.

Oh won't you tell me now sweet mama,
how can you stand to see me cry?
She said, "Look out now, papa, I could stand to see you die."

I said, mama
You treat your daddy so damn mean,
Oh when I ask for water,
She brings me gasoline,
She brings me gasoline.

Y'know, my woman, she so
doggone evil,
She's evil all the time,
She wants you to kill me so you'll have
it on your mind.

Oh, mama,
You treat your daddy so damn mean,
Oh, when I ask for water
She brings me gasoline,
She brings me gasoline.

She's got eyes like crystal waters
Lips like sherry wine,
A body like fine brandy and a soul
Like turpentine

Oh, mama,
You treat your daddy so damn mean,
Now, when I ask for water,
She brings me gasoline, she brings me gasoline

I know Rory Gallagher used to do a version of it, late sixties.

Rory Block does a good version, can't remember what lp it was on, probably available on cd now.

It just occurred to me you could do a gentler, bawdier version

'she treats her daddy oh so fine,
when I ask for lovin'
she brings the vasoline'

If it's a version of what I think it is, then Jo-Ann and Dave Kelly (UK) recorded it in the 60s or early 70s.

Compilation LP called "I Asked For Water, She Gave Me Gasoline" on Liberty (1969). Title track by Tony (TS) McPhee. Jo-Ann was on the record (not Dave) but not on this track. I believe it is now re-issued on CD.
