I know it is possible to locate someones ip address, but just how much information does this search reveal ? I read it is now so good they can pinpoint an actual room in a college were a message was sent from.

most broadband ISp's use dynamic TCP/IP to make it difficult for hackers. But that doesn't mean the ISP does not know who is connected. I would think they would want to guard the data to prevent hackers getting too much of a foothold. But I have no concrete information.

Some large companies refuse to recieve e-mail from a user who has dynamic TCP/IP which is a pain. So the ISP provides a static one, but it costs more so we can assume they have engage protection which is not as cost effective.

It depends...if one knows the IPs of a group where a 'name' is connected, like in Mudcat, it ought to be reasonably easy to sort out one from another. That does NOT means knowing your street address or real name. That info would be available only from your ISP, usually with a good cause..(i.e. a court order) The IP does 'usually' give an indication of wher in general you are...country, city.

Someone from Miami, calling themselves Rumplestiltskin, could be reasonably anonymous in a forum such as this....that is, no one could drive up to your door.

A lot. It can give a lot.

Check out ARIN, for instance. But to explain it all would require an essay I'm not willing to write.

Max has IP2 program to find email origins. Or type the IP address into ARIN. very easy. Max can locate anyone who types on mudcat, can't you Max?

One can tell the Whois people to withhold personal contact information. That is what they must have done, otherwise you'd also get addresses, etc. This is a better example:

and then you could just post your grandpa's first name and the title of a song he taught you and your mom's cousin's song will track you down via google as happened to me last week! Granted that was a pleasant thing, but it just goes to show you that in merely talking about ourselves, we give away enough detail that a motivated person can find us.

My Cousin musta been googling on some song names and first names or.. town names since I included that and up popped my mudcat post!
