The great "Galloping Major", has past away. Puskas spent nine years at Real Madrid, forming a deadly double-act with Alfredo di Stefano and winning five Spanish titles and three European Cups. Puskas' international goalscoring record was truly remarkable. In 84 matches for Hungary between 1945 and 1956, he scored 83 times. Definately one of the all-time greats.

And in 4 matches for Spain he scored no goal. Only two players (of those who played more than just very few games) have a better goalscoring record than Puskas: Gerd Mueller (Germany) scored 68 goals in 62 games for the national team and the all time best is Puskas's teammate Kocsis scoring 75 goal in 68 games for the Hungarian dreamteam. Let's not forget Puskas's gold medal in 1952 (football team). He was one of the all time greats.

Wolfgang

Puskas - who was so famous when I was a lad - came along at the time England suddenly realised that they weren't the best team in the world. We (England) invented the game but along came a bunch of foreigners who had a new and exciting take on the game, and could play rings around us!

Nope. It's a famous Russian dumpling, but you can only buy puskas on Geary Street.

Yes , we're talking football, as in association football.

Puskas was one of the greats, a Hungarian who played inside forward, was clever, strong, one who showed us Brits that there was a point to skill at the game, quite as much as energy, effort, strength, will, and fierceness which are so prized on these islands.

Earlier posters have given the highlights of his career.

It'll be wonderful when we ever finally decide that skill is far more than 'prettiness', the British way to dismiss 'skill' despite the fact that 'skill' gets results. Then Puskac's memory will be best honoured.

   RIP Ferenc.

Ferenc Puskas will rank with the greatest, a pure genius, Hungary intend to honour their famous son at all league games this week.
The man was years ahead of his time, witness the goal in the 1953 game at Wembley when England were taken apart by a great Hungarian side, his brillant dummy and great finish had poor Billy Wright bewildered, and the poor oul Yanks can only make fun of a Thread beyond their understanding, stick to your American football a game invented for trained gorillas.
