Hallo all , I am not sure but I may have asked this long time ago
I need to help with this song , this song is on our cd and in Icelandic
its called , Bíum , bíum bambaló.

But in English- Come The Rainbow or Come by the Rainbow ??

So if someone have some knowledge about this song and have the lyric
please add it here , I would like to sing this in English sometime.

this may be an old or very old Irish or Scottish song.

· the 'wild Geese', the Irishmen who were forced to leave Ireland and find employment in the armies of Europe after the failure of the Jacobite cause.

This version is from Risteard MacGabhann of Derry, though I don't know if he's the author of the translation and note or if they come from a book. Some of what I gave before are acceptible alternatives, but there's also a bit of error, so use this version.

Skarpi,

There are many different versions of this song which is best know by its Gaelic title "Siúil a Rúin" which translates literally to English as "Walk my Secret" or more accurately as "Walk my Love". Some versions have the words "Siúil a Ghrá" in the chorus, which also means "Walk my Love". There have been many discussions here about the song under those titles.

There are a lot of versions of the song where people who didn't know gaelic just sang nonsense words instead of the gaelic, and the one you have given above is one of those.

I have no idea how this ever became known as the rainbow song, or Come the Rainbow, as none of the words have anything to do with that title.

The line which is sung in English as "Johnny has gone for a soldier" is "Go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán" which means "may you go safely my love".

I don't have a definitive answer for this, but "Now my love has gone to France" may show some connection. A lot of the Wild Geese frst went there to fight for the French army, as a way in part to continue their war against the British.

The reference in the version quoted by Skarpi above is more direct, as the 'Wild Geese' (the original ones at least) left after the losses to the forces of King William of Orange in the Jacobite wars in Ireland (1690s). But many versions of the song I know make no reference to the "Wild Geese" apart from the "gone to France" line.

I'm not sure I know a song called "The Wild Geese" although I've heard many about them. Can you point me to a version?

My apologies, Declan. I just went searching for a song by that name and found mostly sites with songs about the birds, not the Irish. http://indigo.ie/~wildgees/wildgees.htm I think there may NOT be such a song--something that would really surprise me given Ireland's love of it history and the love of its sonwriters to commemorate that history.

I read the phrase on Mudcat somewhere, but it must have been in relation to the Irish soldiers who were fighting in various places and under various flags. Sorry for side-lining the discussion here.
