Subject: What about your favourite waltz then? From: GUEST,Kit Date: 22 Sep 00 - 02:47 PM This can be the cousin to the jig and reel threads. What's your favourite waltz? Kate Martin gets my vote. It's one that Skipjack and I have played together and it brings tears to our eyes. Kit |

Subject: RE: What about your favourite waltz then? From: Jim Krause Date: 22 Sep 00 - 03:43 PM I dunno. Can't make up my mind between "The Candadian Waltz" aka "Ook-Pik" and Jay Ungar's "Lover's Waltz." |

Subject: RE: What about your favourite waltz then? From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 22 Sep 00 - 05:01 PM OOoooooooo, yes soddy- Lover's Waltz is lovely! I couldn't possibly decide on one favorite. "Sheebeg and Shemore" (I know-forgive the lousy spelling) has long been a fave because of a fond memory of a house party with an impromptu dance, but I also like the other chestnuts, including Planxty Irwin and good old Ashoken Farewell. Mind you, I've been fiddling for less than a year, so waltzes are what I do best! |
Subject: RE: What about your favourite waltz then? From: Jon Freeman Date: 22 Sep 00 - 05:09 PM I'll vote for Margaret's Waltz. Jon |

Subject: RE: What about your favourite waltz then? From: Helen Date: 22 Sep 00 - 06:25 PM Rosbif Waltz - it's on Alan's Mudcat Midi page. Love it, and a high percentage of people who hear it seem to love it too. Apart from that the list of my favourite waltzes is huge. Farewell to Devon, lots of O'Carolan tunes, a last century tune called Play, Gypsy, Play; Westering Home, etc etc. Have a listen to Mudcat's own Paul Evenden/Musicman on his CD called Farewell which is a tribute to his late wife. Many of the tunes on that were suggested in a Mudcat thread. It's available through the Mudcat shop, I think. Helen Helen |
Subject: RE: What about your favourite waltz then? From: Sorcha Date: 22 Sep 00 - 06:29 PM I am sooooooo bored with most of the waltzes I play, including Westphalia, Red Fox, Irene, Ash Oken, Tennesse, et al. I was very glad when Margaret's came along--new and beautiful--have to go with Jon here. |

Subject: RE: What about your favourite waltz then? From: CarolC Date: 22 Sep 00 - 09:55 PM Kit, I had my first look at the sheet music for Kate Martyn's Yesterday. If you can play that (with the grace notes) on the accordion, you are no beginner. I'm still trying to recover the brain cells I lost when I tried to play that piece. Here's my favorites for accordion (so far):
The Dancer, by Larry Unger Carol |
Subject: RE: What about your favourite waltz then? From: Marion Date: 22 Sep 00 - 09:59 PM Can I call any slow piece in 3/4 a waltz? Or are there defining characteristics? Marion |
Subject: RE: What about your favourite waltz then? From: Rich(bodhránai gan ciall) Date: 22 Sep 00 - 10:02 PM Josefin's Waltz by Vasen, as recorded by Dervish There is a multi-instrumentalis/singer who sometimes sings thae Boys of Barr ná Sraide as a waltz at céilís. I'm partial to that but I'm not sure if it's just the song or Bruce's singing of it or the fact that I'm usually dancing for the first time of the night after playing through the sets. Subject: RE: What about your favourite waltz then? From: GUEST,Tanner Date: 23 Sep 00 - 08:36 AM FAR AWAY... But this tune may not be of waltz origin. Jigs, slow airs, songs... Once we almost did Salley Gardens as a waltz! |
Subject: RE: What about your favourite waltz then? From: Jeri Date: 23 Sep 00 - 11:51 AM Marion, probably more than half of the tunes named here (including the Carolan pieces and Ashoken Farewell) weren't actually written as waltzes. I think the rules are if the tune can be played so people can waltz to it, it counts. Try Empty Wallet Waltz (haven't learned it myself) or Southwind (AKA An Ghaoth Aneas), a beautiful slow air that makes a beautiful waltz when speeded up a bit. |

Subject: RE: What about your favourite waltz then? From: GUEST,Kit Date: 23 Sep 00 - 05:18 PM My god, I didn't expect such a response, better get myself in gear for a few new tunes. Carol, thanks a million for the names, I'll get right onto them. As for Kate Martin, what are grace notes? I may be playing them without realising it. Ask Skipjack, he's heard me play it. If I've learned it quick, it's probably because I love it so much. Also, I now know my e-mail address at uni, and will soon know my mailing address too. Could we e-mail and then start to write? I can get Skipjack to give you my e-mail address. Thanks again to everyone, Kit |
Subject: RE: What about your favourite waltz then? From: Susan A-R Date: 23 Sep 00 - 09:31 PM I was playing at a nursing home with friends and a fellow asked us about the Firefly Waltz Anyone know it? We've also arranged a waltz for Weeping Sad and Lonely. In Gone With the Wind, it's described as a waltz, and it's not, so we made it into one, and it's pretty nice. we just call it Scarlett's waltz. (oops, too much red wine tonight. Ah well, a girl's gotta unwind sometimes.) |
Subject: RE: What about your favourite waltz then? From: Ebbie Date: 23 Sep 00 - 09:58 PM There are so many, and more are added all the time- no way I could choose a favorite one.
