Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: Jeri Date: 05 Sep 08 - 09:21 AM One problem was the length of some people's turns. One act did a 10 (at least) minute song AFTER it was announced time was short. A few people in the audience near me commented on them. I don't know if less time would be effective as having musicians that understand time constraints and are considerate enough to give others their turns. Personally, I really enjoyed that workshop, aside from being irritated at the act that ran down the clock. I think that was an anomaly and that sort of thing isn't likely to happen again. |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: john f weldon Date: 05 Sep 08 - 10:12 AM Musicians can be a difficult lot, often unfamiliar with time not measured in "bars" (pun intended). Probably easier to herd geese! I can offer no advice, Beer; only sympathy! |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: Jeri Date: 05 Sep 08 - 10:55 AM I know time can slip away and I wouldn't want performers to feel rushed, but timing really is their responsibility--especially when they're in a group setting. Mike tried, but about all a host can do is let people know they have to be brief to give everyone a chance. He did that. I really do think it was a 'this year, this act, this position on stage' thing. At 90 minutes, everyone, including Mike would have had 15 minutes total, or two 7.5 minute songs. Mike definitely didn't talk for 15 minutes, so everyone else took longer than that. There was some time spent in folks talking back and forth, and that interaction was a good thing. I guess the bottom line for me is that I really enjoyed the workshop and I would have been happy if it had been given MORE time. You had an amazing combination of performers and it was a very special opportunity to have them on stage at the same time. |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: C. Ham Date: 11 Sep 08 - 12:23 PM I think the talking and the interacting in workshop settings is a good thing. When I think back to the Mariposa Folk Festivals of the 1970s, that's what the festival was really about. It wasn't the concert stage where eveyone did their own thing. What I really like about the Ottawa Folk Festival is they devotr several stages all day long to that kind of interaction and leave the concert sets to the evening. |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: Beer Date: 12 Sep 08 - 11:04 AM I also think in work shops it is great. In fact I wish more question's were asked. However in the concert sets it annoys me when a musician talks and talks and only sings 4/5 songs in his/her set. |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: John MacKenzie Date: 12 Sep 08 - 11:41 AM Just re-read the posts on here, and I only just noticed that KenM made history! He found ANOTHER good reason for not getting married. I shall add that to the other 500 or so I have in my shot locker, in case of emergencies. Thanks Ken JM |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: KenM Date: 20 Sep 08 - 03:33 PM Hi, John....not sure if I actually contributed a good reason for not getting married BUT, I'm pleased to announce that my son Matthew had the good sense to schedule his marriage for July 10th which will allow his stepmother and I to attend that event as well as the Apple Hollow Fest. |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: John MacKenzie Date: 20 Sep 08 - 03:44 PM Deepest commiserations Ken, and Matthew. XG [It's a joke BTW, for those who don't always realise] |

Wadden Pete just dropped a note mentioning the fact that he is happy to hear that next year is on and he is keeping his fingers crossed for 2010. Maybe he can be convinced him to come for 2009. Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: Beer Date: 11 Nov 08 - 11:52 PM I have been reading over the 2008 thread and find it just fascinating. The up's the downs(but mostly up's), it reads like a soap with good vibes. Just though I would mention it. A little news...............99% of the musicians for 2009 are booked. Lots of other news to come. Don't you just hate this. Adrien |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: C. Ham Date: 12 Nov 08 - 02:52 PM I'm looking forward to the news of whose going to be playing. |

Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: Beer Date: 07 Jan 09 - 07:52 PM Just a thought John. If you want to leave your Guitar at home you could easily borrow one around here. I have a great sounding Guitar that you would be welcomed to use. This could save you a lot of hassle in carrying one around. I know it is not like your own Axe but it will still work. Adrien |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: Beer Date: 08 Jan 09 - 01:02 PM Have you been to the web site recently? Please do. After the main page comes up, click on English or French to enter. Once you have done this you will be treated (in about 30 seconds, dial up a hour or so.)to a beautiful song recently composed by our very own Ron Bankley. The web page in the next couple of weeks will also have a new look. Adrien |

Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: SINSULL Date: 08 Jan 09 - 01:24 PM I have heard John right in the comfort of my own living room. Maeve - looking for a ride? I am thinking of going this year. What is the housing like? On site? Motels? SINS |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: maeve Date: 08 Jan 09 - 09:54 PM Wouldn't I love to go! Thanks, Sinsull. I doubt that I can leave the farm then...I'd surely like to meet some of the fine 'Catters there, have some music fun and hear John and the rest of the musicians. Sigh. I hope you and maybe some other Mainers can make a journey there. maeve |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: Beer Date: 08 Jan 09 - 10:23 PM Sins On site it is rough camping only. No electricity except around the camp fire. There is one rented outhouse. The boys can use the trees. The site is beautiful and there is no charge. There are bed and breakfast a hop skip and a jump from the festival site as well. I just found out that there is a house that is rented out and can sleep up to 20 people. I don't know if this is exaggerated or not. I will know in the next week all the details and how much. I will post details when I have them Adrien |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: John MacKenzie Date: 09 Jan 09 - 06:33 AM Well thanks for the nice thoughts folks, and I'm really looking forward to this one. I would prefer to borrow a guitar than to lug one around. However, I am going to be around for a couple of weeks after the festival, visiting with a few folks. This means I really need a guitar for a fortnight. What might work would be for me to bring my D28, and borrow a 12 string for the festival weekend. I play a Tanglewood, and I have also played and liked a Taylor 12.{Kendall has a lovely 12 string ;)] It's a big ask, so don't feel obliged to go overboard on this one. Regards John |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: Beer Date: 09 Jan 09 - 08:36 AM Well John , I can loan you my Blueridge for your set but a 12 string maybe a problem. Adrien |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 09 Jan 09 - 08:51 AM Adrien, is the 2009 site up yet? I can only find the 2008 one, on googling. |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: Beer Date: 09 Jan 09 - 09:00 AM Hopefully before the end of January our new web site look and all the participants will be shown. The preliminary design was presented last night to the board and we have suggested some minor changes. But all is going very well. |

House: Provides the following. 4 Double Beds 2 Queen size 1 3/4 1 Single Up to 14 people but I'm told that up to 20 have slept there. The others in sleeping bags. Upstairs Bath and Shower Downstairs 1/2 a bath (whatever that means.) Kitchen facilities with Stove, Fridge, Pots and Pans and so on. Large living Room. About 10/15 minutes from Festival by car. Cost: First person $50.00 Additional persons $20.00 each This sounds like a good deal and a party to be had. Adrien |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: gnu Date: 09 Jan 09 - 03:27 PM Well... that sounds like a heck of a deal. Book it and sort it out later. |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: Beer Date: 10 Jan 09 - 02:52 PM A group that was scheduled to play last year but the lead singer took ill is rescheduled. I have heard this local Montreal group on numerous occasions and feel that they will provide a very set. Stuart MacDougall of Bridge End Dairy Co. is the main singer and has some great numbers that he has written and I'm sure will be appreciated by all. http://www.bridge-end.net/ |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: bobad Date: 10 Jan 09 - 03:30 PM They couldn't fit in the last word of the last song on the list in ReverbNation. This makes for a very provocative song title. |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: GUEST,bankley Date: 10 Jan 09 - 03:44 PM Hey Beer, I'd like to borrow your 'Blueridge' for an acoustic version of Hendrix' 'Let Me Stand Next to Your Fire'... I'll bring my own lighter fluid... trouble is.. it only works once ! |

Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: Beer Date: 12 Jan 09 - 11:24 PM Well Folks it is time to let you know that Ron Bankley will be appearing at the festival and God only knows who he could have up on stage with him. I'm expecting that the new c/d will be ready and the trunk of the car will be a lot lighter on the way home. Adrien |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: GUEST,bankley Date: 13 Jan 09 - 11:58 AM Thanks Beer, the new cd will be ready.... no plans yet for any invited guests during my spot, 'tho I do want to 'sit in' with at least a couple of other performers during their sets.. if the timing is right..... and want to spend more time in the area.... a beautiful corner of Quebec... I used to have a camp in Covey Hill, just down the road... Alan Fraser was a neighbour.. remember him ? from Fraser and Dubolt... a great writer....'Dance Hall Girls'.. anyhow I look forward to it a lot... thanks for the invite Adrien |

Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: Beer Date: 13 Jan 09 - 10:20 PM I thought that winter and all the crap that comes with it would spark folks to get more active and look forward to the summer and create some lengthly conversations in this thread I guess I was wrong. So lets try this. Bruce Murdoch Ron Bankley Penny Lang Jason Lang (son) Mike Regenstreif (Host of Songwriters' circle) As a further motivator. Other surprises are still to come. Adrien |
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009 From: bobad Date: 13 Jan 09 - 10:32 PM Don't forget John MacKenzie? |
