Apple Hollow Music Fest Quebec Canada '09

28 Aug 08 - 08:14 PM (#2424988)
Subject: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009
From: Beer

I am very pleased to announce that all has been cleared for next year's festival. There were a few issues that had to be resolved and this all came to a very good conclusion this afternoon.
I realize that this is early to start a thread for July of 2009 but some of you were wondering if it was going to continue and I couldn't give that answer.
I would also ask that if you reply to the Apple Hollow Thread that you do so on this one and not the one started for 2008.
Now the work (fun) begins.

Thank you for the responses.

"Some day"....I hope you can rum.

At this stage it is the 17th and 18th of July Terry.

Dan, you certainly are more than welcome to come. The jam on Friday evening you would be more than welcome to join in.

As far as the line up is concerned I hope to have everything done by January 1st 2009. A number of the same acts will be asked back as I owe the musicians who played for nothing or next to nothing a return performance with a financial commitment on our part.

Man, I am so damned proud of you you have no idea. You tell your missus for me that I definitely miss her cooking. I do NOT understand why you ain't over 250 pounds. Thank you again for all the trouble you went to on my behalf. Because of you we were able to practise and get ready for the show and the Youtube stuff with Jeri and April. Please thank Dean again, if you would. And when next you see the beautiful folks whose land hosted the festival, and the folks who were tending the bar--not that I spent any time there or anything--give them my very best regards.

I still think that very old stone grain silo oughta be turned into a house.

Our apple orchards are in decline over here, Adrien...I think we need you, urgently!

UK apple orchards in decline

You could start up a whole new 'branch' and bring our apples back, along with some great music.

The United Kingdom Apple Hollow Music Festivals

We could try and match those beautiful photos of people sitting amongst the apple trees, watching the musicians on stage..

You should make some Apple Hollow Music Festival Cider, you know...I bet that would go down *very* well with the audience...and the artists too.

Beer...
Some friends, an old-timey-folkie group known as the Whistlepigs, play regularly at La Lumiere (on Bernard) as well as Grumpy's and (no kidding) the Vermont Correctional Institute. You should check them out if you haven't heard them. They're good, they're fun, and they usually play for ***free***! So if you offered them a small amount of dough, it would seem like a big raise.
Just a suggestion

What I love most about the festival is the people. They are great. I had a run-in with a mind-reading goose--the one who was chasing the goats around. He came at me with his wings out and his face hissing!. I thought, "You'd look nice after 5 hours in a 350 oven." Bastard really came after me, so, not being the hero type I elected to get my butt outta there. Nasty little guy--all seemingly 250 pounds of him. That was after my performance so I don't know if that's what got him going.

And ya gotta love a guy like Beer (Adrien). He picked about a dozen pails of blueberries and gave them to his friends. They contain an antioxident which I think in the health lexicon means ya don't rust.

The kids who did the noon stage were great, and one of the gals is gonna do a song on thye main stage with me next year then a solo. That kid could sing. Her folks gave me permission to ask her so I hope they are there in 2009.

I like laid-back towns, and after the frenzy and heat of Montreal itself, it was a wonderful break away from my routine life in Hinton.

I got to meet some great folks there, and the fellow who did sound gave me a neat fire hat which I thought was rather cool. Gotta admit though that Budweiser tastes like horse piss after three cans. Good though. Switched to coolers--the vodka kind.

I met a whole bunch of Adrien's family, and they're as nice as he is. Crazy, too. Norm got a new focus on his music and I expect he'll get a CD done before 2009 closes it's door. That will be something I look forward to. His "Some Mother's Son" is a phenomenally touching address to the war-mongering tendency of the human race, and there weren't too many dry eyes when he finished that song.

That stone grain silo sure does make me think of a place from the Merovingian's time, and the night skies there are filled with stars, all where ya'd expect 'em to be. Locate Polaris and vector backi in my head and I could feel the Rockies and the Prairies, the somewhat faster rivers of the west, and hints of strong winds that carry one's memories to other places and times.

The small towns of my youth and teenage years are still much the same although as with all places people live, the closer ya get to the hub the busier life gets real fast.

The duet, "Northern Crossing" blew me away. Their song, "That's What Worries Me" is the best song I have heard by anyone in in many years.

I'm looking forward to next year. Hell, it's less than 10 1/2 months away.

Bruce

Lizzie, I love your suggestions. The only realistic one I'm afraid could be the cider. The early apples were ready but were forgotten to be put out for free consumption. Must remember this for 2009.

Thanks John for the heads up. Will inquire. Must be careful though as there are so many who want to play and there are only a certain number of spots left. I could easily go with 3 or 4 stages but must build up the attendance before this is done.

Bruce.
Crossing North are very special and the song which you refer to is one of those that only come around once in a blue moon. And by the way, which one is it that they want to do of yours? I told my brother Norman that if his c/d is not ready for next year than he is out. Nothing like a little pressure. I believe when Ron gets the chance he will be lending him a hand.

Yes were all a little crazy but that
's what makes it fun.

There could be a beautiful collectible poster, t-shirts with heirloom apples and signatures of guest musicians...

Buckets of blueberries? Buckets full? Judy's white chocolate, blueberry cheesecake? Recipe? These sound like things to live for, eh?

Sigh.

The devil is in the details. Speaking of which: A kid was asked to use these four words--defeat, deduct, defense and detail. He pondered, scratched his head and said, "The feat of da duck went over da fence before da tail."

They were GOATS. Jeeze, we have STANDARDS in Canada!

Adrien,

I'm delighted to hear that Apple Hollow will return next summer. My favourite part of most folk festivals is the afternoon workshop sessions when well chosen artists work with the right host or animator. Some festivals do that very well and you had one such session last year when Mike hosted the songwriters. I hope you'll have more like that.

05 Sep 08 - 09:08 AM (#2431757)
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009
From: Beer

Hi Ham.
I certainly hope the song writers' session will take place again. I have been giving it some thought as well. I may cut it back to 60 minutes instead of 90 minutes. Or cutting the number of musicians in the session down. Reason for this is that on the second time around not all the musicians' got to play because the 90 minutes ran out. In fact the session ate into the next performance time which was not fare. So something to ponder on for a while.
Adrien

One problem was the length of some people's turns. One act did a 10 (at least) minute song AFTER it was announced time was short. A few people in the audience near me commented on them. I don't know if less time would be effective as having musicians that understand time constraints and are considerate enough to give others their turns.

Personally, I really enjoyed that workshop, aside from being irritated at the act that ran down the clock. I think that was an anomaly and that sort of thing isn't likely to happen again.

Musicians can be a difficult lot, often unfamiliar with time not measured in "bars" (pun intended). Probably easier to herd geese! I can offer no advice, Beer; only sympathy!

05 Sep 08 - 10:55 AM (#2431851)
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009
From: Jeri

I know time can slip away and I wouldn't want performers to feel rushed, but timing really is their responsibility--especially when they're in a group setting. Mike tried, but about all a host can do is let people know they have to be brief to give everyone a chance. He did that. I really do think it was a 'this year, this act, this position on stage' thing.

At 90 minutes, everyone, including Mike would have had 15 minutes total, or two 7.5 minute songs. Mike definitely didn't talk for 15 minutes, so everyone else took longer than that. There was some time spent in folks talking back and forth, and that interaction was a good thing.

I guess the bottom line for me is that I really enjoyed the workshop and I would have been happy if it had been given MORE time. You had an amazing combination of performers and it was a very special opportunity to have them on stage at the same time.

11 Sep 08 - 12:23 PM (#2437468)
Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009
From: C. Ham

I think the talking and the interacting in workshop settings is a good thing. When I think back to the Mariposa Folk Festivals of the 1970s, that's what the festival was really about. It wasn't the concert stage where eveyone did their own thing. What I really like about the Ottawa Folk Festival is they devotr several stages all day long to that kind of interaction and leave the concert sets to the evening.

Subject: RE: Apple Hollow Music Fest 2009

I also think in work shops it is great. In fact I wish more question's were asked. However in the concert sets it annoys me when a musician talks and talks and only sings 4/5 songs in his/her set.

Just a thought John. If you want to leave your Guitar at home you could easily borrow one around here. I have a great sounding Guitar that you would be welcomed to use. This could save you a lot of hassle in carrying one around. I know it is not like your own Axe but it will still work.

Have you been to the web site recently? Please do. After the main page comes up, click on English or French to enter. Once you have done this you will be treated (in about 30 seconds, dial up a hour or so.)to a beautiful song recently composed by our very own Ron Bankley. The web page in the next couple of weeks will also have a new look.

On site it is rough camping only. No electricity except around the camp fire. There is one rented outhouse. The boys can use the trees. The site is beautiful and there is no charge.
There are bed and breakfast a hop skip and a jump from the festival site as well.
I just found out that there is a house that is rented out and can sleep up to 20 people. I don't know if this is exaggerated or not. I will know in the next week all the details and how much. I will post details when I have them

Well thanks for the nice thoughts folks, and I'm really looking forward to this one.
I would prefer to borrow a guitar than to lug one around. However, I am going to be around for a couple of weeks after the festival, visiting with a few folks. This means I really need a guitar for a fortnight.
What might work would be for me to bring my D28, and borrow a 12 string for the festival weekend. I play a Tanglewood, and I have also played and liked a Taylor 12.{Kendall has a lovely 12 string ;)]
It's a big ask, so don't feel obliged to go overboard on this one.

Something to think about.

House: Provides the following.

4 Double Beds
2 Queen size
1 3/4
1 Single

Up to 14 people but I'm told that up to 20 have slept there. The others in sleeping bags.

Upstairs Bath and Shower
Downstairs 1/2 a bath (whatever that means.)
Kitchen facilities with Stove, Fridge, Pots and Pans and so on.
Large living Room.
About 10/15 minutes from Festival by car.

From this site: http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1082.html

Entry into Canada is solely determined by Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) officials in accordance with Canadian law, see http://www.cbsa.gc.ca for details. Canadian law requires that all persons entering Canada must carry both proof of citizenship and identity. A valid U.S. passport or NEXUS card satisfies these requirements for U.S. citizens. If U.S. citizen travelers to Canada do not have a passport or approved alternate document such as a NEXUS card, they must show a government-issued photo ID (e.g. Driver's License) and proof of U.S. citizenship such as a U.S. birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or expired U.S. passport. Children under sixteen need only present proof of U.S. citizenship.

From this site: http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html It appears that as of June 1, 2009 you will need a valid passport to re-enter the US so that would satisfy the Canadian entry requirements.

No Bruce, you and John are lucky in that your not performing side by side on opposite stages. I still have to do 10 bios then it is to finalize the balancing act. This I think is the hardest part in the organizational part. There are so many things to consider. As an example. Who will open on the stages. No one really wants to be first as folks are still drifting in. How many single act performers are there and what type of music do the play. Who should I have performing opposite the other stage performer. I truly believe that this years line up is very, very good and in the 7 years that I have been doing the juggling act, this years is the toughest.

Still, a lot of country people have done Jesse Winchester songs, so who knows?

I purchased a new Metal Detector just before the festival thinking I would have lots of time to use it afterwords and damn but if the snow didn't start falling when I remembered that I hadn't even taken it out once. Maybe this summer.

Sorry frogprince but I missed your post Thanks to my buddy for pointing this out to me.

I don't know how your getting the information as our site is temporally down (backdoor I guess.) until most of the information for this year is dowloaded into the system. This take a bit of time as it is all volunteer work and there is a lot to do. The camping question I will send you a p.m. on this and anyone else who wants to camp as well.

Hey--I actually got one of them little GPS nav things. I can get celebrity voices for it too. The apartment wasn't too hard to find last year though, and April found the festival just fine. The only problem I had was finding 401 from Ormstown, and I couldn't get on a computer to check.

(Hey Ad, see if the folks running the booze booth can get some Mojitos instead of the vodka thingies. Then again, after the first few gulps, you couldn't taste them.)

That's ok, Adrien. You are correct- We're reviving a small, long-neglected farm. Being away means there's no one to harvest and sell trees, perennials, and produce. And I'd rather say "no" and then find I can get there after all than promising to attend and having to back out.

My small role here is to keep kicking the thread to the surface so my fellow musicians remember The Apple Valley Music Fest is July 17-18, 2009. I'll be quiet now.

Our Coffee House went just great last night. Excellent crowd and the donations at the door was terrific. Close to $250.00   I believe this was due to the fact that the donations go to local school children in need of a little extra nourishment. Next month's collection will go to a local organization that transports those in need of cancer treatment to Montreal which is about an hour away form this community.

Adrien,

I just saw the description of the Montreal Folk Reunion on your web site. That session would be a highlight at any big folk festival. I think you'ce scored a major coup with it.

From the Apple Hollow web site:

The Montreal Folk Reunion brings together six people who played leading roles in the vital folk music scene that Montreal enjoyed in the 1960s and '70s. They'll reminisce about the old days at clubs like the New Penelope, the Café André, the Back Door, the Yellow Door, the Karma Coffee House, the Golem Coffee House and the Montreal Folk Workshop, and show us why they remain important forces in the folk scene so many decades later.

Singer-songwriters Jesse Winchester, Bruce Murdoch, Penny Lang, Willie Dunn and Ron Bankley all started their careers on that Montreal folk scene. Host Mike Regenstreif started hanging out on the folk scene as a high school student in 1969. Soon he was one of its major organizers.

O.K.
Now for a little something that should be interesting "for some folks".
Very soon there will be an announcement board located on the Web Site that I will post up coming events or related activities that are scheduled to take place. As an example, If anyone scheduled this year to perform at the Festival will be able to announce where they are playing if they so desire. If Bruce Murdoch is doing a gig in Nova Scotia at the so and so Inn, all he has to do is drop me a note and ask for it to be announced. I will gladly post it on our site. If I'm doing a fund raising, be it a bingo, card party, auction, garage sale etc.I could very well announce it.

This will be an announcement board and not a discussion one. If Ron Bankley is having a great time and preforming in Georgia and is about to release another great C/D., I will announce it.

Get the idea? At this point I will take further suggestions to help this venture along.

I would much rather speak on the phone or in person directly so I could get my full meaning across. E-mail's tend to get expressed the wrong way sometimes. But this is about music so hopefully everyone is on board.

Very Excited.
Got a call last week from a friend from Prince Edward Island by the name of Gordon Belsher http://www.guernseycove.ca/ who will be passing through along with Star fiddler Richard Wood.
http://www.peisland.com/richardwood/touch.htm
They have offered to do a concert in which we will share the profits. Mine going to the festival and theirs to help them in their tour which includes Ontario and Alberta.

I heard these two fellows play at the Montreal Celtic Festival about 10 years ago and I was thrilled to hear that they are together again and I will have the pleasure of having them in my company and doing a show that will help pay the bills.
Oh! If there is anyone in my area that wants a ticket please give me a call as were only going to sell 100 tickets all in advance. $15.00 a ticket for a two hour show of the top fiddling, piano and singing to be heard taking place in Ormstown on May 28th.

gnu, thanks for posting a link to that YouTube video. Here are two comments that I added to that video's comment section:

Azizip17 (10 minutes ago) Show Hide 0 Marked as spam Reply | Remove Thanks for posting this video. I learned about it through the online mudcat discussion forum. He's slated to do a concert soon with Gordon Belsher in Quebec to support their upcoming tour which includes Ontario and Alberta.and also support the Apple Hollow Music Fest that occurs annually in July.

I loved Richard Wood's hearing uptempo fiddle playing. Besides being a great player, Richard Woods has great stage presence!

and

Azizip17 (2 minutes ago) Show Hide 0 Marked as spam Reply | Remove I also liked watching the dancers. I'm not that familiar with Celtic dancing . I've read that American tap started as a combination of African American dancing and Celtic dancing but that one major difference is that in Celtic dancing the upper body is held stiff. I'm wondering is the arm swaying in 1:03 of this video a departure from traditional dancing and if there are other contemporary changes in this dancing. Such changes are fine with me-I'm just curious about this. Thanks again!

**

Could anybody here weigh in on that question about the dancing? Maybe I shouldn't have written "weigh in" as how much you weigh is your own business :o)

But I am curious about that question about Celtic dancing.

And not at all by the way, this years' Apple Hollow Music Fest sounds great! I'm sure that all those attending this festival will have a good time.

Azizi, there have been threads in the past on Irish step dancing. You might want to start another as it's a major departure from the topic of this thread.

Cape Breton step dancing differs from Irish. Video of Richard Wood, Gordon Belsher and step dancer Cameron Francis.

It would almost be worth driving up and crossing the border to see these guys.

Well it is time to bring this thread back up for a little while. this was started last Aug.28 and Gnu was the last to record a message on April 14th. a little over a month ago. Hope you have been checking in on the web site. Not to much to report on except that the Bus thing doesn't look good but on the other hand the "Montreal Folk Reunion" session (90 minutes) maybe be professionally recorder both on audio and video. If this works out folks we will have a gem. For those of you who are viewing this thread for the first time the M.F.Reunion features: Penny Lang(Canada's First lady of Folk.) Bruce Murdoch. Willie Dunn, Ron Bankley,Jessie Winchester and Host Mike Regenstreif.

A note from the web site:

Adrien's Apple Hollow Blessing

Oh heart that flitters; flutter, fly,
That I may run this road again.
Oh float my feet that they may meet
The friends who travel far, and then

Allow me strength to set the stage
With music makers rich and rare.
Their wealth elusive, sung and played;
Bright legacies for all to share.

And when the final toast is raised,
Both friend and stranger must depart.
May good will travel, side by each,
And music linger in each heart.

Not a word of a lie. I was working today getting an estate ready for an auction on July 4th. Well when I opened a large box, there must have been a hundred ties in it. I immediately thought about this thread. If I could of, I would have thrown them all in the truck to pass out at the festival.

All kidding aside, it could be a fun contest. The funnest, most outrageous, sexiest, etc., etc. tie wins a Bruce Murdoch, Ron Bankley, c/d.

No, I'm not going to do it. To much on the plate as it is. But a fun thought for the future.

Adrien, it occurs to me that KenM may have been really on to something with his comment that the ties sounds like a great fundraiser.

The tie thingy could also be a fun public relations gift (even if you don't win the bid for that box of old ties that you mentioned). Lots of guys have old ties that they could donate-the more atrocious the better. And the performers or MCs could have fun with how/where they wore the ties during the festival.

And this ties in with frogprince's post "Bless be the tie that binds" (though he said it somewhat differently :o).

Plus the matter of ties also "ties" in with the reunion aspect of this years' festival as gnu posted on 27 Feb 09 - 05:27 PM

When it's apple blossom time in Chateauguay Valley
Fine friends will gather from far and wide.
With old and new songs, and stories aplenty.
Come join us there, in the countryside.

-snip-

Anyway, it's just a thought, but it seems to me that "handled" the right way, this tie thingy could add more energy to what already sounds like a great and memorable gathering.

Azizi, Ken is right and I can envision a real fun contest with folks coming on the grounds with some very far out looking designs, but with 14 day to go I have no intention of starting something that will require more of my time. Any of you members that are coming want to spend the next two weeks organizing some sort of a tie event your more than welcome to do so.

From: Azizi

Adrien, I definitely recognize that as the organizer of the Apple Hollow Music Fest, you are much too busy to do anything with this tie idea or tie ideas. Besides, the concept of the fest may be too serious for this type of connection. But given that the fact that there are quite a number of light hearted posts on this thread, I didn't get that impression of your fest.

If I were attending the fest, I would have been glad to help with that effort and with others which are probably much more important. But unfortunately, I will not be attending.

I recognize that this tie contest or tie whatever (which could tie many things together) is only tangential to the core purpose of the event. However, if you wanted it to be, "ties" could have been used as a publicity stunt (to further garner community interest for the fest. Imagine a news article "tieing" the event with the artists then and now. Imagine a news article promoting the event and asking people to come to that event-or to one day of that event-wearing their most outrageous ties. Women can wear ties too. [which is one equal opportunities theme that could be used).

As I've already indicated, I recognize that this is quite tangential to the core of the festival.

But sometimes tangents are good things too. IMO, tangents are one reason why Mudcat discussion threads about the Apple Hollow Music Fest are interesting to read. These threads have been more than just announcements about the event, though the event should and does take center stage.

IMO, the "Bless be the tie that binds" idea could be a fun promotional opportunity and a possibly fun raising opportunity. True, the idea popped up out of no where [which is how many ideas come], but it's no big deal if people decide not to do anything with it.

Best wishes,

Azizi

Had they heard about Apple Hollow sooner than 4 July...! They are terrifically disappointed not to be there for this Montreal Reunion time. So, folks, remember to let them know when you are playing somewhere; they have air miles! And they still care about all those who played the Door during their time there. See you next week!

Damn, I just realized who Sookite is. Sorry Dave. I was actually thinking this morning that I should drop you a note than other things got in the way and I forgot. Like planting cedar trees, installing an air vent for the washroom, picking up bags of stones and patio blocks, 45 minutes on the phone with a lady who likes to talk. But I listened as she is going to video tape the Montreal Folk Reunion. Took off and spent an hour at the estate where we are doing an auction this Saturday. Dropped in an offer condolence to a friends wife mother who passed away. Then getting supper ready as it is my turn to cook. Went down in the basement to bring salt in for the water softener only to find that there was two feet of water in the pit where the furnace is in. Back to the hardware store just in time to buy a sub pump and take care of the problem. Still light out side so I had time to cut my neighbors lawn and half of mine. Then there were the phone calls and e-mails to answer. Now having a bag of salt (I mean chips) because I think I need it. And i also think I need to wash it down. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to complete the Youth Stage line up and send it in for publication. We are also adding a half hour show of Contra Dancing by a friend who has offered to do this with her group of professionals Vermont. Thank you April even though you are not a member here.

Miraculous weather reversal due to Divine (or other) intervention created a perfect-weather day. The place was packed! Many fine performers, much amiable shooting-of-the-breeze. My Ashcan Alley contribution sold out! Enjoyed seeing John Mackenzie for the first time.

Best moment: Mark Nerenberg steps in for missing slow-poke folk-reunion guys & gives stellar performance. A great musician, I could listen to him all day. Next year?

I must echo John's observation on the weather - two years in a row out of a swamp of miserable summer weather, Adrien plucks a picture perfect day for the festival - he owes someone big time.

As usual a great day meeting old friends and making new ones and hearing some great music. Some highlights; seeing and hearing Penny Lang again - the last time was 1966 or 1967, Bruce and Ron again giving us a wonderful set and of course the elegance of Jesse Winchester - what can you say - an old smoothie who charms with his wit, wisdom and beautiful songs.

The reunion set, hosted by Mike Regenstreif, was probably the highlight of the day for me though. It was spell binding listening to the tales and reminiscences that these stalwarts of the Montreal folk scene of the 60s and 70s were recounting and hearing them perform songs from those times.

Thank you for a great day Adrien.

It was a superb event... hats off to Adrien for the beautiful time... there were so many magical moments, it'll take awhile to absorb... I was on stage for around 4 hours all told.. so I want to apologize if I repeated myself too much on the guitar... but nobody complained to me..so I guess that it was fine... Jason is a force to be reckoned with and Jesse is a total gift... the thing is... there was no 'filler' acts... everyone was really great and the 'bar' started out high and kept getting higher as the day progressed... the weather, comaraderie, music... hard to beat... the tremendous talent was only surpassed by the love and respect that filled the air... merci encore 'Biere' aka Beer... I can add little to what has already been said - but the friends who attended with me brought their 95 year old dad and he had a blast. He tried to get out of his wheelchair to DANCE when the last group came on!!! He stayed through the whole thing and had more fun than he has had in ages.

Personally, it was terrific to connect with old friends like Marc R, who was amazing, and Mike R, who has grown up wonderfully well in the last 30 years! And to meet mudcatters and other online friends.

In addition to the music and camaraderie, the size of the festival made it more intimate, friendly, a place to meet and make friends. Well worth the 3500 miles I travelled to be there.

Flawlessly organized - I'm picky; I always find a flaw if there is one.

I repeat the kudoes I have already given to Adrien, Ruth, Danny and everyone!! Great folks!

What a truly great, great festival!
I used to go to festivals all the time, in my youth, and they were the highlight of my year. Haven't been to one since my now grown kids were very small. This one, small as it may have been in comparison to ones with 7 stages running at once, was every bit as good.
Actually, better, more intimate and friendly, with much mingling of musicians and audience. And the line-up was soooooo superb! Not a weak performer in the bunch...only further inspiration to keep this music alive.
It was immeasurably gratifying to me to be invited on stage to sit in a few times. I sure hope to play this festival again!
(And thanks so much for the kind words from a couple of people above. What a pleasant surprise to see them here. I just joined Mudcat, having only found out about its existence from Dorothy at the Festival. Now I have to resist the temptation to hang out here instead of working!)

I want to thanks everyone who made the trip up to the Festival. I think the only issues left to deal with are how to follow it up with an even better Fest in 2010. I must say meeting John M and Dorothy were festival highlights for me. John's performance was most enjoyable, as was Dorothy's open mic song. Ron, Hugh Wallis and I are still buzzing about your guitar skills...nothing less than remarkable. And Bruce...was there a gentler, more talented artist on the Fest grounds Saturday?...don't think so. Splendid times, hopefully see everyone back for next year.

Thanks Dan.

What I basically wrote earlier was that the two camera persons were for the recording of the Montreal Folk Reunion and because Jesse missed it they stayed for his set. It maybe a few weeks before I see the results as she is also going to edit the performance. At the moment I do not intend to do any fundraisers with the DVD but I do intend to have each musician including Mike Regenstreif receive a copy. They in turn can do what ever they want with it. I got it done for free and all I wanted from it was to have it recorded for historical purposes.

As far as posting any of the concert on You Tube that is out of my hands. If someone post a video clip from the festival and someone doesn't like it or permission has not been granted, than I believe that it is the person who has been filmed to ask You Tube to take it down. I could be wrong but with iPhones, Blackberries, cell's etc. it is beyond control. Maybe someone with more knowledge on this could post here or start a separate thread on the topic.

Well, I have been following the posts on this thread since Pat and I got back to Florida and have had some time to reflect on the extraordinary festival Adrien, et. al. put on. First, how the hell does he dial up the weather Gods like he does? Last year, there were fierce thunderstorms on Friday night but the skies turned blue on Saturday. This year, even though it wasn't as nasty, it was still unpleasant on Friday night but was followed by a great day of weather on Saturday.

What a day on Saturday! Penny Lang, backed up by her son and grandson and Marc...what a way to kick it off!! John McKenzie on the Barn Stage was incredible and then we all dashed back to the main stage to see/hear the Montreal Folk Reunion hosted by Mike Regenstreif. Willie Dunn was late getting there because of some misdirection to the festival site and Jesse Winchester didn't know he was supposed to be there. But, what a great time Bruce Murdoch, Penny Lang, and Ron Bankley put on. It was great to hear Bruce bring out some oldies like "Come Across to You" and "Lay Down Our Drums". For an old folkie from Montreal, it was great to hear these icons of folk music reminisce about the Yellow Door, the Blue Lantern, the New Penelope, and to talk about our now departed brothers, Tex Koenig and Sean Gagnier.

Bruce Murdoch put on an incredible set backed by the able back-up of Ron Bankley on guitar and the vocals of April Werner and Jeri Cerlew.

Those who were there will never forget Jesse's set. That expressive face and wonderful sense of humor. Those great old songs like Yankee Lady, Down Around Biloxi, and Brand New Tennessee Waltz.

All in all, what a night!

de rien/de nada..........Money is like manure..........pile it up and it smells like hell. Spread it around and it helps things grow. Forty-some years ago, Ron, Penny, Willie, Jesse, and Bruce (along with people like Tex and Sean who are now only with us in Spirit) brought me great joy in all those little joints in which they used to play. I'm just happy to have the opportunity for a little pay-back.

I got to grade 10. Then they sent me to summer school. The place--Montreal High--was filled with GIRLS. Yeah, THAT helped my studies. Then I recall the day Ms Van Reet called me to the class in June of grade 11. She said, "Bruce, you have failed French written, French oral, algebra, geometry, biology, art, geography and phys ed." I inquired as to what exactly I'd passed. She said, "English written , barely, and English lit, barely." In the english vernacular, I was chuffed. SHE taught those courses.

Bruce.....do you remember Mr. Ironsides at Verdun High? Needless to say, with a moniker like that, he had many other less complimentary names like "tin ribs" and "brass balls". The reason I remember him so distinctly is one of those "where were you when" moments. I was in Grade 10 geometry with Ironsides on November 22, 1963 when news came in of John F. Kennedy's assassination. I was thinking of that last week while I was in Canada when word came of Walter Cronkite's death. As a young Canadian, I didn't know much about American network news in those days, but I remember being glued to my TV that Friday evening listening to Cronkite and the events of the assassination.

Sorry for the thread drift.........

Yep. He later became the guidance counsellor. It was Ms Van Reet who told me about JFK's death. I was writing an exam.

It was also Ms Van Reet who told me to go to NYC and be a folksinger, because I sure as hell would never be an academic. That woman had vision. I thought she was great.

that's okay B..... I have a dvd of my set and it's going in a time capsule under a concrete slab next to Jimmy Hoffa...
I was set up to record from the sound board but John C.,the sound man forgot to push the button, while Quentin's lady, Lise, filmed it with a hand-held... those built in mics can be 'thin' at the best of times... everytime the wind blew thru the tent the bottom end would just drop out... I look fwd. to hearing the workshop which was recorded from the console... makes a huge difference.... techno bugs aside, at least nothing caught fire and was a super time overall... Scotch is a surprisingly good addition to Chinese soup. Got shown this by a waiter in a Chinese restaurant, when we were all having double scotches (neat) before dinner. When the soup arrived he told us to pour one in to the big bowl. He was right. Of course, we had to order another to drink on the side. Scotch in soup is a seasoning for the soup -- not a way to drink scotch.

Anyway, one of the lines in "Saturday Night" is "And somebody's ordering scotch and coke", a symbol of how debauched the evening was (and was about to become......"George is out calling a cab with the stranger who still has her tongue in his ear"). Similiarly, putting single malt scotch in soup, in stew, adding it to milk, drinking it with ice, etc. etc., are all completely blasphemous as I'm sure John McKenzie would agree. My dear departed mother had an old 78" vinyl record of Sir Harry Lauder and on it he did "Just a Wee Doch an Doris". One of the lines, and a great test if you have nipped too much at that single malt is, "and if ye' can say it's a braw' bricht' moon lich't nich't, then it's alright you can!"! Good night, all!

Judging from commentary and photos, I'd say that Apple Hollow Fest is the perfect kitchen party; friendly, lively, and offering lots of excellent music, with moments of sheer heaven alternating with top notch banter.

You who have been part of it are fortunate indeed.

I just don't understand computers I guess. This is the first time I am able to access this thread since I posted the pictures at 1:57    Other threads no problem, but this one I could not. Must be something I said. Or maybe what "Gnu" said.
What I wanted to say and forgot after I sent that last message, was that the gathering that took place on Sunday started with a celebration for my sister's 70th birthday at 10 in the morning and ended up at our house at one p.m. The day before I would invite folks to drop over at 1 but I know this was not well planned on my part and I missed some folks like frogprince, clipper, topicaltom my good friend Satch and his wife and others. This was not meant on purpose as most of you know I was a little busy on Saturday and the Sunday gathering would only pop in my head once in a while. So I apologize if I hurt your feelings as it was not my intent.
If anyone can help me on why I can't get on this thread please help. Otherwise maybe I'll be back on in a few days.

You didn't ask me either, but you asked somebody at the table where I was sitting and I could have asked point-blank if I was invited too.
But then I would have had to find something to do by myself until 1PM and ask the B&B (marvelous, by the way) if they'd let me stay another night and pay. I surprised my friend by showing up in Toronto 'early'--lst year, I was a couple days late.

Sounds like everybody had a great time even if I wasn't there! (joke) I miss having been there even more after seeing how much fun everyone had. (sniff -(not really))

As for getting back into the thread, at 600+ posts, maybe it's just too big? I can't think of any other reason that would prevent you from loading this. (I'll PM that.)

Adrien:

I'm looking back on this thread and note that you started it on August 28, 2008 with an optimistic comment that now the work (fun) begins (for the 2009 festival. I dearly hope that we will see the same kind of optimistic posting later in August this year for the 2010 festival. 614 postings later, what can be said? The festival was incredible.......the artists magnificant, and the day was dialed up by God, whoever She is.

I know you have many challenges.....money chief among them, but managing all the interpersonal dynamics of putting this festival on, that requires you to have the skill sets of a therapist, a mediator,a salesman, a grant writer, a politician, and (at times) an authoritarian dictator can really stretch you.

In the past, I have run a number of marathons that took months and months of preparation and training and when I crossed that finish line on race day, I swore I would never do it again. But, once the pain receded and the memory of all those prepatory 20 mile training runs faded into memory, I found myself searching the marathon racing calendar to see where the next challenge might be. Keep the faith, partner.........

Ken your to much. Thanks for the kind words and as far as next year is concerned it will be discussed on Aug.11th.
I am going to the Champlain Valley Folk Festival this weekend and will be crashing at April and Ben's place. I am already excited in the networking aspect of my visit. Be it hunting for new talent or talking to organizers of the event. Meeting new people has always been a passion of mine so I hope to make lots of new acquaintance's as well.

When I look back at our festival of two weeks ago I am very happy in the end results. I don't mean the financial aspect, but the overall friendliness that was very present. Patrons and musicians mixed as equals. Friends of old hugged after years of separation. Folks driving from Seattle,Nova Scotia, Michigan, Toronto, Ottawa, London Ontario, Saint Thomas Ontario,New Hampshire, Vermont, New York State, Montreal, the Eastern Townships and so on. Then there were folks like yourself and Pat who flew in from Florida. And a friend from England as well. A chap from Scotland, Hinton Alberta and British Columbia. And these last three were performers and did not do it for the money. I could never afford to have them flown.
Was it worth all the work and behind the scene struggles? In my opinion, every blessed minute.

I missed most of it as usual, but what I did see and hear,it was all very positive. One thing that does stand out is the enjoyment that our Mudcatter "Dorothy" was getting out of the day's activities. That was a long drive for you Dorothy, but I think that you were happy that you came.

As I have already posted on other sites, it was worth every mile I drove - about 3500 by the time I arrived! I had a blast and the four friends who accompanied me enjoyed it totally. Especially dad(95), as you noted on the pic page. Now I am committed to taking him to every music event we can manage. If we make it to 95, may we be in as good humour and able to enjoy as much of life as he does. Last night, concert in the park at Baie d'Urfe, tonight the cafe in Ormstown. We have restrung his guitar, now if someone will tune it...

Apple Hollow enriched a lot of lives!! It has transformed mine.I'm sticking around Quebec indefinitely so expect to drive only 43 miles next year! But I am sure that will only add to my enjoyment - as if anything could. I really was high as a kite, wasn't I! I would not be in Montreal today had it not been for Apple Hollow. And I have loved Montreal and Quebec since the first day I arrived in August 1968.

So, perhaps I have more to say thank you for than some but that was one terrific time. I was in on the organization of the first Edmonton Festival in 1980, so I have a good idea of what goes into it. You did a monumental job and produced a fantastic party.

Thank you - and an offer to help in any way I can.
Dorothy

My best most broken-in comfortable FotLs have gone by-by. I loved that pair of shorts. The elastic finally gave in to old age and just quit elasticking. I was gonna have a ceremony wherein I commended their years of service keeping my arse warm, but alas, I can't find them. I think they're in my guitar case in the event I run outta rags to wipe the strings with. I know this is not something most people would get sentimental about, but those shorts gave me their support over the years and I thought at least a few words were needed to express my anguish and gratitude.

So last year, we did laundry (actually April did it) and the dryer did NOT work. Clothes got spread out in the back of her station wagon to dry, and *somebody's* dainties got hung on a peg over the table, accented by a flyswatter and draped with a dish towel. A lovely still life.

I think the fact I took a picture at all had a lot to do with gin... or maybe it was the tonic. I can tell you the description of the scene is a lot funnier than the actual evidence. And some things should be shrouded in mystery. Other things call for a HazMat team and a lot of plastic, but just keeping them off the internet is a first step.

Well I make only one comment to pass on at the PM, PLEASE, can we have a better beer selection next time?

Back In The Clydesdale
by Mike Campbell 2004

I went to the bar after working all day,
And ordered a dark Guinness Beer.
But the Yuppies were chatting so thick on their cell phones,
I guess the barman did not hear.
He brought me a glass and a tall boy of Bud,
And set them down in front of me,
Well I coughed and I sputtered in pure disbelief,
And sang out this chorus with glee.

OOOOO
Put that Budweiser back in the Clydesdale,
Its not the right flavor for me.
The color's all wrong and there's not enough foam,
And its got all the kick of weak tea.
Now pour me a pint of that good Guinness Stout,
With color you cannot see through.
Put that Budweiser back in the Clydesdale, boys,
And pour me a beer that is true.

Then the waitress came by when I'd finished my first one,
An angry young woman named Jill,
She snatched up my empty without even looking,
And went off to find a refill.
Then she brought back a glass of some pale liquid garbage,
And said, "Here's the Bud you asked for."
Well I gave her a glare that would knock down a horse,
And sang out this chorus once more.

Chorus

So if ever you're seeking a beer with good flavor,
To finish your day or your meal.
If they serve you a Millers, a Coors or a Bud,
Or some other brand that ain't real,
If the "King of Beers" is the only selection,
I hope that you'll answer like this,
Put that Budweiser back in the Clydesdale, boys,
I won't drink twelve ounces of that lousy beer.

Chorus

But you can never get any agreement on that. The last time I left it out, a little old lady shook her cane at me and shouted "THAT'S NOT NICE".

Here I am again, stressing the importance of one moment, one action by one person and how it can transform the lives of others.

If I had not found out about Apple Hollow, I would not have come to Quebec; my friends would not have accompanied me, with their 95 year old dad, to the Fest; we would not have discovered how much dad loved music; he would not have enjoyed the last two months of his life as much as he did. He perked up! He had fun places to go! He had FUN!

After the Fest, we took him to every possible music event, especially the Cafe Namasthe in Ormstown every Friday. He had a blast. He loved every minute of these musical events. When he died, instantly last Saturday night while watching TV with family and friends, he knew he was loved and appreciated. On Friday we were at the Cafe; 24 hours later he left us. He told us "his Dorothy" was there with us and within half an hour, he was gone. (His wife Dorothy died 13 months ago at 97.)

Daily, he would ask, "where were we?" "Oh, yes. They really like me there!" Such delight in the music, the people who spoke with him, the women who "danced" with him in his walker.

His two sons are totally grateful for this very special part of dad's life that would never have happened if it were not for Apple Hollow.

So we, family and friends, thank, with all our hearts, Adrien and all those who made that Fest possible. It enriched many lives, including that of Stuart Doak,

I met the gentleman at Apple Hollow, and I'm sad to hear of his passing. However it sounds like he went peacefully and happily, that's all any of us can ask.
Thanks for the post Dorothy,

JM

Just back from a long day in Peru New York. My accordion buddy and I played at an Apple Fest for 1 & 1/2 hours and had a great time. Looks as if we are already booked to play next year.

Stuart was a special person who just loved music. He would always say to me at the end of or during the evening event that he wished he had brought his guitar. Well maybe he is playing now.
Dorothy your words are very special and thanks for posting.

Sublime, Dorothy; I only know of one other person who "checked out" in style that well. The patriarch of a friend's family lived a comparable span. He finished Sunday dinner with the family, pushed back and said "That was sure good", and died instantly.

We often don't know how we affect others with whom we cross paths. I'm glad those of you who were privileged to meet the gentleman also have been rewarded with the knowledge that you and the music made a difference.

Thanks for posting, Dorothy.
