Subject: RE: Sandy Paton Mem.&Music Tribute 1pm 10 October '09 From: Jeri Date: 10 Oct 09 - 09:30 AM I was hoping to be there, but Micca's visiting and I got a flu shot on Thursday to which my immune system is seriously (over)reacting. Sandy was such a Big Deal, but he didn't act like it. Professional, yes; too important to talk to folks, no. If it weren't for Sandy, I wouldn't have known Rick and Heather Fielding. I likely wouldn't have joined Mudcat and met all the people I've met through this place. I wouldn't have gone to the FSGW Getaway or ever driven to Toronto or New Jersey just to talk and play with fellow musicians I'd never met before. I don't believe anyone who knew Sandy at all will not miss him, but we're better off for having known him. Love, light, laughter, music and joy: when I remember Sandy, I'll feel those things. Y'all give each other an extra hug for me. |
Subject: RE: Sandy Paton Mem.&Music Tribute 1pm 10 October '09 From: bbc Date: 10 Oct 09 - 09:03 PM Thanks, folks. Kendall, your message was read by Caroline's sister during the memorial. I had already heard from Caroline that some of you others were under the weather. Hope you feel better soon! There was a good crowd at the memorial. Many folks who recorded for Folk Legacy took part in the memorial & there were multitudes of performers & music lovers in attendance. I hesitate to start listing names, because I know I'll leave folks out. Suffice it to say that we all came together through love of Sandy & out of support for Caroline. We all wiped away a tear, now & then, but there was laughter, too, & lots of great music, from the stage & singing along. I think Sandy would be pleased. best, Barbara |
Subject: RE: Sandy Paton Mem.&Music Tribute 1pm 10 October '09 From: GUEST,Dan's laptop Date: 10 Oct 09 - 11:57 PM It was one of the most amazing afternoon of singing I can ever recall. Now it's time to support Caroline, David and Rob by buying Folk Legacy CDs. Dan Schatz |
Subject: RE: Sandy Paton Mem.&Music Tribute 1pm 10 October '09 From: GUEST Date: 10 Oct 09 - 11:57 PM I grew knowing the Patons quite well as a family friend from birth; their concerts were truly one of a kind, and their voices blended together beautifully in a soft melodic tone. They often visited us when in Southern CT and performed at my mom's elementary schools. The best part of their concerts was that they involved a great deal of audience participation. He was truly a great guy. Don Frazier |
Subject: RE: Sandy Paton Mem.&Music Tribute 1pm 10 October '09 From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 11 Oct 09 - 08:09 AM My wife Ruth and I had a beautiful time at the memorial. For me, it was wonderful seeing old friends like (but not an all inclusive list) Roy Harris, Harry Tuft, Bill Shute, Skip Gorman, Ed Trickett, Jennifer Woods and Bob Clayton, Bill Spence, Patricia Herdman, and several Catters. It was a special pleasure meeting Bill Schatz, Joe Offer and Nancy King. I could easily double that list, but others may add to it. Not all would be familiar names to Catters. Caroline was as gracious and radiant as ever, and David Paton was warm and welcoming despite his "Summer of tears," as he so beautifully put it. The music was uniformally excellent and the testimonies were heartfelt and moving. It was an experience I'll never forget. The recorded and video taped the whole thing. How wonderful if they made it available for purchase down the line. |

Subject: RE: Sandy Paton Mem.&Music Tribute 1pm 10 October '09 From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 11 Oct 09 - 09:59 AM And then, Barbara Carr was there, as you've notice, and Jim and Cindy Bean and their son Nate, David Jones, Cliff Haslim, Jerry Esptein, Joe Hickerson, The Johnson Girls, Greg Arzner and Retty Leonino, Bob Zentz, Naomi Solo and many others I've seen around over the years whose faces were familiar, but whose names have slipped away after too many years of absence. I know I'm still forgetting to include a few. Jerry |

Subject: RE: Sandy Paton Memorial & Music Tribute 10 Oct 20 From: Joe Offer Date: 11 Oct 09 - 11:29 AM It was the most wonderful musical gathering I've ever attended. Maybe this was the final Golden Ring: A Gathering of Friends Making Music to Honor Sandy Paton - the father of the Golden Ring. Rest in peace and in joy, Sandy. We all loved you. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Sandy Paton Memorial & Music Tribute 10 Oct 20 From: Joe Offer Date: 11 Oct 09 - 09:37 PM Yeah, we missed you, Kendall - but your letter was beautiful, and Caroline's sister read it beautifully. They made a video of the gathering - I hope there will be a way for us to get copies. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Sandy Paton Memorial & Music Tribute 10 Oct 2009 From: Booklynrose Date: 11 Oct 09 - 10:02 PM Yes it was a very good gathering, and I thought it captured a little of Sandy Paton's beautiful spirit. Sharing memories and songs brings some peace. For those of you who could not be there, next week Howard Glasser is holding a memorial at the Eisteddfod on Sunday morning (10/18)honoring Sandy and the other wonderful people who were associated with Eisteddfod whom we have lost. This year Eisteddfod will be in the Hudson Valley (info at http://www.eisteddfod-ny.org ). There is a schedule on the web site. Many of the Eisteddfod performers were also at the memorial. We will hear more wonderful singing/playing. |
Subject: RE: Sandy Paton Memorial & Music Tribute 10 Oct 20 From: Joe Offer Date: 12 Oct 09 - 10:56 PM At the memorial service, somebody mentioned Sandy's voracious reading habits. I thought he told me he read a book a day, but he said that wasn't so. Maybe it was a book a week. Anybody know how much he read? I called him a "closet PhD" - a high school dropout, but one of the wisest people I have ever known. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Sandy Paton Memorial & Music Tribute 10 Oct 2009 From: bbc Date: 13 Oct 09 - 06:32 AM JOe, I am witness to the piles & shelves of (hardcover) books all over the house, as well as the fact that, every time I visited, he had, at least, 1 book open on the table in front of him. He read mostly nonfiction &, specifically, history. I am also witness to the fact that before I drove him to his last doctor's visit, he made sure we brought a book along & was concerned whether one would be enough. I do love that man. Barbara |
Subject: RE: Sandy Paton Memorial & Music Tribute 10 Oct 2009 From: kendall Date: 13 Oct 09 - 06:53 AM I guess you could say he was educated far below his intelligence. Excellent command of the language, head full of interesting stuff and a life full of interesting people. I'm a history major so we never had a problem with something to discuss. I didn't know the memorial would be taped so I hope my letter wasn't too sappy. |
Subject: RE: Sandy Paton Memorial & Music Tribute 10 Oct 2009 From: bbc Date: 13 Oct 09 - 09:21 PM Kendall, it was perfect. Thanks so much for sending it! love, Barbara |
