From: *#1 PEASANT* Date: 11 Jan 01 - 07:17 PM But some of the side dishes are the major food groups of the ancient ballad tradition without which Jazz would have been rather weak. And possibly also not as well received by those of the european traditions. I just downloaded a piece of the Burns cd from napster! (Armstrong St. Louis blues- I now have a hand car- Handy- so have made a hand related compilation- Handy wrote the st louis blues.... Lots of hand prints and hands on springs and a shrine to the helping hand on top! Conrad |
Subject: RE: BS: Ken Burns? Really that stupid? From: Jimmy C Date: 11 Jan 01 - 07:34 PM I guess a little of a lot of cultures and backgrounds went into the evolution of Jazz, just as american folk music evolved from many sources as well, I really don't care if jazz came from Ireland, Iceland, Scandinavia or Timbuctoo, I'm just glad we have it to enjoy. |

Subject: RE: BS: Ken Burns? Really that stupid? From: richlmo Date: 11 Jan 01 - 11:24 PM I am a huge Ken Burns fan. His Civil War, Lewis and Clark and Baseball series are among the BEST television of the last 15 years or so. If you are debating his information and his sources , He has another winner!! Guess that means you're watching! |
Subject: RE: Ken Burns Jazz? Really that stupid? From: GUEST,Saul Date: 08 Nov 21 - 11:11 AM Musicians have been stealing, and adapting, riffs forever. Improvising on a theme is enshrined in music. The arts aren't as narrow minded as critics. Those who can do; those who can't do write articles. |
Subject: RE: Ken Burns Jazz? Really that stupid? From: GUEST,Stan Ellison Date: 08 Nov 21 - 12:53 PM Beethoven first made his name famous in Vienna in improvising competitions. Only later did he go on to composing. J S Bach was famous for improvising music from small musical fragments generated by his audience. These were not the same kind of improvising that happened later in jazz but never the less they were improvising. Most of this European improvisation was not written down, and of course none of it was recorded, so the only evidence of it is written, and not in American English. Perhaps it is expecting too much of Ken Burns to require him to have knowledge of European culture. I enjoyed his series on Country Music. |
Subject: RE: Ken Burns Jazz? Really that stupid? From: GUEST,Phil d'Conch Date: 08 Nov 21 - 04:16 PM Swing-and-a-miss... Burns blew it completely on the origins of American West Coast jazz and, as far as we know, that's where that word "jazz" first came into the jargon, from baseball, no less. Critical Race Theory in practice: The professor's objection to Paul Whiteman was the colour of his surname. (!?!) |
