Sol illustrates the difference I was showing: 2001 and Excalibur weren't intended to be musical films, they just use classical pieces in such a way that brought a lot of attention to that music. I'll insert another one: Elvira Madigan made Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 into a hugely popular piece. For years you'd hear the regular name plus "Elvira Madigan theme" in parentheses, and people would hear Also Sprach Zarathustra and visualize the monoliths on the moon in the film Kubrick film. O Fortuna (the best known part of Carmina Burana) has been used (or mimicked) in many films. From Reddit:
The film that brought it into fashion as a score cue was Excalibur (1981). It was then used in Glory, Hunt for Red October, The Doors, Natural Born Killers and others. By the 2000s it was being used ironically or comedically in Jackass, Cheaper by the Dozen, and Paul Blart: Mall Cop.

The author of that remark was quickly corrected when it was pointed out that the two films I struck through were only meant to suggest the Orff piece.

The Blues Brothers and Yesterday were always intended to elevate the music.
