I think my elves have been drinking too much happy juice.

But they have left some indeciph .... unfathomib .... tricky clues as to where they live.

*thinks* "Wonder where I can get me one of them Acme Automated Santa Traps?   If I bag the big guy, them elves will surely come a'running, and then I can sure show em what happens to little ones who pull too hard on my tail feathers..."

To my Secret Santa:

I am alive. That means that if you were bettin' I was dead so you could save a few bucks by weaseling out of this Secret Santa thing, you're shit outta luck.

However, I am very easy to please. About the only gift I can think of that wouldn't be appreciated would be an accordion. And most years I would probably even appreciate the accordion. It's just that I have a surplus of firewood this year due to our little visit from Hurricane Ivan and I'd rather burn it than an accordion.

Last year, I got a rock from Bat Goddess. It's a really cool rock and I love it. It's sitting on the window ledge beside my computer as I type this. It is very quiet and well-behaved.

If you have any mismatched socks I can use them to wrap pottery to take to art shows.

See? I was serious about the "easy to please" bit.

Bruce

(Who likes all kinds of acoustic music except "chick singers" like Tori Amos, wears extra-large size shirts, hates clothes that have to be ironed, wears baseball caps religiously to keep from getting his bald head sunburned, likes off-the-wall movies, doesn't wear jewelry, will eat anything, plays 6-string steel-string guitar, 12-string steel-string guitar, 6-string nylon-string guitar, Dobro, banjo, and has no preference as far as string brands go.)

Do they come in assorted shapes and sizes? Do they have all the usual male appendage problems - erectile disfunction? premature ejaculation? social diseases? Are earwigs social?

Hello, 4-S

I don't log in for a day & what do I see - pressies accumulating for my (non-existant) chimney. Thankyou, thankyou, plural pressies is a Good Thing & Much Appreciated.

However, the only chimney here is on my doll's house & it is not open at the top. I'd better get a knife or something sharp to it or the pressie will just bounce back into space when dropped towards the chimney.

Aw, c'mon, bee-dubya-ell -- last year you got more than a rock from me! You make it sound as if it was the only thing in the package!

(Of course, I threw it in at the last minute as a total afterthought and I'm really glad it made so much of a hit. It's a very nice rock, gathered just down the road from me, and full of garnets. Got more of 'em piled in the side yard. Just sent you a little one cuz the Postal Disservice makes it so darned expensive to send rocks to people and Florida is a looooong way to throw from New Hampshuh.)

Dear Linn,

I apologize if I made it sound like the rock was all I got for Christmas last year. The other loot was cool too, but the rock is, well, a ROCK.

You can rest assured that my Secret Santee will receive a few choice bits of splintered wood from some of my trees that were destroyed by Hurricane Ivan. Hopefully, he or she will interpret my sending those splinters as an attempt to share a unique experience in my life, and not merely an attempt to us the postal service as a means of debris removal. Whether or not he or she cherishes them as much as I cherish my rock is up to them.

Hmm.... I wonder how much it would cost to just mail all this crap to people? Let's see... 200 trees at an average of, say, four tons per tree, multiplied by 37¢ for the first ounce and 23¢ for each additional ounce...

I have a theory I call "interactive table cleaning."

We're "table sitters," Curmudgeon and I. Life revolves around the table in the center of the house. And stuff accumulates on the table. I'm constantly sending clippings and stuff off to people whom I hope will find the enclosures interesting. Sometimes this transfer helps keep the piles on the table under control. Mostly it's a losing battle.

Once when I was explaining the process to a friend, she asked if I sent this stuff to people I knew or to addresses taken at random from the phone book. Wow! What a concept! "Hi, you don't know me but here are some interesting items from my table that I hoped you might find interesting . . ."

I've never gotten up enough nerve to try it. And, besides, actually shovelling out cubic footage that way does get pricey -- as bad as sending rocks through the post.

I just consider myself lucky that I came home from the Nottingham Library sale a little while ago with less than I donated yesterday. (But I DID mail a book off to a friend yesterday, too . . .)

Dear Santy, My gift arrived and I am dutifully putting it up in a safe place in the dining room closet. (note to self: read thread closer to Christmas to remember Which "safe" place you put this package a month ago...) I do not want to chance accidentally invoking the "good girl/bad girl " magic which you have woven around this gift. One question though.... my birthday is kinda almost Solstice so I've always felt a kinship to both holidays... Can I choose, or is the magic date specific???? Which do you celebrate Santa???

Thankfully & Thoughtfully

To my Secret Santa:

Reindeer like sherry? Who knew?

I did post hints, but they're in another thread. To save valuable shopping or manufacture time, here's a reprise:

1. what is your age range? I'm 50
2. gender? Female

3. Do you have a favorite color? Dark green (Rifle green); Imperial purple; indigo.

4. favorite authors / type of book? Complicated serious detective stories like those by Ian Rankin, Minette Walters and Val McDiarmid (unfortunately I have already read their entire oeuvres, alas!) I also like Terry Pratchett, but have read all of him, too.

5. what books have you really been wanting? Volume III of Simon Schama's History of Britain and the first book in that exciting new detective series that you know about and I do not.

6. what type of music do you like? Old Blind Dogs, the Buena Vista Social Club, Old Crow Medicine Show, Doc Watson -- anything with a really good guitar.

7. what cds have you really been wanting? surprise me

8. What movies (vhs is in the price range) have you been wanting? No thanks -- I find most movies don't repeat well

9. what is your t-shirt size? XL (I like them big and floppy, with a wide neck, especially V-neck if possible)

10. do you collect anything? No. No! Noooo! (Except books and CDs, but they don't count as "collecting", do they? They're, um, essential equipment, like the furnace.)

11. what are some of your other hobbies? playing guitar, wrestling with the mandolin (it's still winning, but I'm gaining), writing (I do a military history column in the Canadian Forces newspaper), cookery (especially French), following Edmund around battlefields

12. do you prefer gold-tone or silver-tone jewelry? Gold, but don't buy me jewellery because I can't wear the fake stuff and the real is too expensive.

13. please include anything else you feel is important that would help your secret santa know what you would like:

I'm not big on cuteness so, if geese in sunbonnets is your bag -- well, don't go there. Also, second-hand is good. Clothing should be washable and able to withstand feline assault.

Hi! from the North Pole. I just returned from Santa's House where he and Mrs. Claus where having a big party celebrating his return from his vacation. Yes, the sign is off the chair and he is keeping it warm and entertaining lots of little ones. I tried to check his list to see how many of us where on his good list but he wasn't about to let me see it soooo we'll all have to wait and see which list we're on. (Thank goodness he got back from the warmer 48 in time to get things going at his house.) The reindeer are looking good and fit. Elves are VERY busy.   Hoo, hoo, hoo.

Well, I'm late checking in as usual. Working busily to find something appropriate for my far-away Santee (who has NOT posted anything helpful on this thread), and doing it in time to send it on its long journey. I was really glad to see the note from my very own Santa, since I'd been wondering if the elves would be able to find me in my new Maine home.

Santa, I've been relatively good (by Mudcat standards?) this year. It would be mighty nice to get something besides coal (although that was always the threat on St. Nicholas Day in my Dutch household when I put my shoe out before going to bed on Dec. 5 for Sinterklaas to fill). Hints: Think crafts. I love handmade, close-to-the-earth stuff. Pottery that can be used. Mittens made from yarn that still smells of lanolin. Earrings (with wires) made from interesting beads (I'm mostly a blues and greens kind of girl). A piece of wood or stone made into something beautiful. A wonderful naturally heart-shaped stone you've picked up from your favorite beach. Dark chocolate.

Now I've gotta get back to my own Santa duties. Thanks, Santa, for inquiring. I haven't had the fun of thinking about a Christmas list in years! Kathy

Dear Tinker:   An interesting point! Does Santa arrive occasionally at Solstice? Or on Birthdays?

Well, I've never heard of it happening before, (except to impatient persons who can't wait to open their pressies but I guess it's a possible. After all, a precedent has been set for presents to be opened before Christmas by the permission for the previous present to be opened early.

Hmmm, well..... we'd need to get the spell altered by knowing the actual Birthday date and that's a tricky one. Is it something you'd prefer to keep to yourself (as you won't be able to contact me directly just yet)?

Perhaps you could arrange to have your birthday added to the list in Members info? Why not go the whole hog & post a profile? I'm sure Pene Azul would be happy to oblige! The list of profiles seems to be sadly lacking even with prolific MadCatters....

Santa does indeed arrive on the Solstice. He's been doing that for some 13 years at my home. The nice thing is that just like you never have to send him a change of address, you don't have to send him a change of religion either.

By the way,

Santa dropped by Orlando on his recent vacation and took one of my tours. He looked in fine shape, and enjoyed walking through the cemetery one evening.

I mentioned the Mudcat and he said to say hi to one and all and wanted to thank us for helping with the holiday spirit.

Bleedin' stupid foolish ill-advised nonsenseical imbecilic puerile comatose computers....

Aw right, mate, listen up and listen up good. I got your bloody present, even though I had to travel far for it, over mountains higher than Snowden, higher than Everest, through raging torrents and across glaciers, battling the elements and hostile natives every step of the way. Indeed, I walked through the very Valley of the Shadow of Death, accompanied only by Donner, Blitzen, Dasher, Dancer, Comet, Cupid, Prancer, Vixen, Billy, and these seven &%#@#$!! elves the Spouse has told to keep me out of trouble. Even though I've sworn that I won't again spend so much time delivering "gifts" to Certain People again, I'm still not believed.

Can you imagine that? Me, the SS of He of the Plumbic Digits? My own spouse thinking that I can't be trusted? Do you know what it's like listening to Elf Chatter all day? Yip, yip, yip! It's worse than those damned Pekingese that the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire used to keep as lapdogs. And just because one Yuletide when I was delivering her presents (an emerald and pearl necklace) I stepped on one of the little bastards and, thinking that it was a piece of rubbish, kicked it for a goal into the hearth, she threw the pot of tea at me and called me a name that Vicky R. certainly wouldn't have approved of.

So, for whatever it's worth, I'll be sending it along right soon now, unless I think of something else to include, which I might.

Mooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sincerely yours,
X (His or her mark)
Your Mostly Secretive Santa

Well, things are beginning to come together. One of the elves is haunting used book stores, and is finding some interesting things besides Ten Thousand Unique Things To Do With Frozen Raindeer Crap," and another one is working her little elvish fingers to the bone making souvenir trinkets.   When does the ice pack close off the North Pole? I want to get these out before the last boat leaves, and the raindeer are talking about striking unless they can get book royalties.

Oh, Santa, I never doubted you for a minute! I wonder if you realize, though, how many hints you dropped in that last post!!

Well everything is gathered together ready to be packed in the sack and loaded onto the sleigh....soon it will be winging (is that appropriate for reindeer??) it's way to your chimney. Don't forget to leave out a mince pie and a glass of something nice!

Love....

Okay, Okay I admit, I was trying all the techniques my teens try on me .... But I did send a profile of sorts to Jeff. My Birthday is on the 22nd and my daughter is three days after Christmas and a son just after 12th night, so it begins to blurr into one long celebratory season. I don't often get surprised though so this is a bit of a treat.

I suppose attempting to shift a spell at great distance could inevitably take an unexpected twist or turn, especially with all the elven magic about your way this time of year. I'll just have to put my feet up with a bit of chocolate and practice patience.

Repentant, but anticipatory

Tinker

Delighted to be able to read your profile Tinker, although have gleaned much of your musical tastes & character from your posts & my spies. Many thanks!

Good girls should always be rewarded, and so the spell has now been adjusted to your choice of opening day, but only either your Birthday or Solstice, so don't rush to the dining room closet & open it just yet! I think I can guarantee a surprise......

Hee Hee Hoo Hoo! Maybe your parcel is on the way! Maybe that is, if it has to travel a long, long way. Maybe it's not on the way yet. Maybe I live quite close. Maybe there's a second surprise heading off in the other direction for someone very dear to you. Maybe that one hasn't left yet either.
Just thought I'd keep you posted. Amergin's own SS.

Hi, My Guru--thanks for your good thoughts. I'm glad the housemate and computer hog (and able computer guide and assistant) let you know I wasn't having any bad times. And oh, my goodness--what a project you undertook that Sunday morning! Around here we call that being a serious overachiever!

Somebody on the trip mentioned that your address reads like poetry and I agree.

Anyway, the Winter Holiday ( I can say that, can't I, since we are both in the same hemisphere--hint, hint--) projects continue to march around here. Have to watch the cats--they tend to carry off unattended bits and pieces. It's almost time to start packing the sleigh--

Love,

Santa
