Subject: BS: Happy St. Joseph's Day! (3/19) From: Dave'sWife Date: 19 Mar 07 - 06:07 AM Happy St. Joseph's Day to one and all. It's one of those saints day feasts the customs of which vary depending upon what culture you're from. As many of you may know, my family was 9and still is) what I described as an unassimilated Irish American family. be that as it may, when I was small, my father was stationed at barracks away from NYC (he was a State Policeman) and for a time, we lived in a small village in Dutchess County. The street we lived on was home to the villages Italian population. They were descedants of stone-cutters from one town in Italy who had been brought over to help build hill-top mansions during the Guilded Age. To this day, the Roman Catholic Church in that town has a mass in Italian on Saturdays and.. since it is St. Joseph's, you can imagine that the feast of St. Joseph was a big deal! St. Joseph's Day for the Italians I knew was pretty big deal. Even though it falls during Lent, you were excused fro most Lenten restrictions. It as also a bit like Father's Day, St. jospeh being such a swell Dad and all. Here's some info on St. Joseph's day: Feast of St. Joseph Tell us, do any of you mark this day in a special way? As traditional as it may be, I am NOT going to serve fava beans for dinner! We're having Spicy Coconut Encrusted Wahoo (a white meat fish kinda like marlin) and Asian Coleslaw just because that's what I happen to have on hand - no special reason. |

Subject: RE: BS: Happy St. Joseph's Day! (3/19) From: Rapparee Date: 19 Mar 07 - 03:39 PM Well, I have a nephew named Joseph, who we call Joe, and he's in the the Marines. And my great-uncle Joe was the cemetery sexton back home for years and years -- he always used horses and dug the graves by hand. But we don't do much to celebrate it.... |
