Subject: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 22 Mar 07 - 07:22 PM I just downloaded and installed Firefox 2.0.0.3 (I think that's the version), and I've got a problem. I've been used to clicking on an envelope icon on the top taskbar, which accessed my Netscape email browser. But this new Firefox version doesn't show that icon, and I don't see any other. Does someone know how this is to be done? Unless I can figure this out, I'll have to go back to Netscape, I guess. Dave Oesterreich |
Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: Bill D Date: 22 Mar 07 - 09:32 PM ?? That's not clear...how is your "Netscape email browser" connected to Firefox? What kind of email account is it? (I have the latest Firefox, but the only email it looks for is my GoogleMail account, and I still have and envelope icon for that.) If this is email thru your ISP, why not use Thunderbird as a standalone email program? You can go to 'tools'-> 'mail & chat accounts' and see if it still has your settings....maybe you can PUT that icon somewhere by rt clicking on the toolbar. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: artbrooks Date: 22 Mar 07 - 10:29 PM I don't use that combination of Firefox+Netscape, but try View->Toolbars->Customize and see if the mail envelope is an available option. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: kerryguy7 Date: 23 Mar 07 - 08:51 AM I believe that the version of Netscape that you were using included the Netscape email client as part of it's suite. Firefox does not. Thunderbird, as some of the other folks have suggested, is a gret option for you to use in order to access your email. You won't be able to add an icon from within Firefox, however, in order to have direct access to your email. In other words, your email application will be seperate from your browser application. (Firefox/Thunderbird) It might be helpful to know what type of email account you are using. Is it an on-line account such as yahoo mail or google mail? If it is then you can just add a "bookmark" to this email site an access your email account right from Firefox. If you are using an ISP acount, such as Comcast or Earthlink, you can still do this BUT it will be much more convienient for you to set up an email client program such as Thunderbird or MS Outlook Express in order to access your email. Hope that helps...? Let me us know what else we can do to help you out with this... |
Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 23 Mar 07 - 09:25 AM MSIE - and I believe other browsers used to have it set up so that if you clicked on a 'mailto' link - it fired up your browser - and you could specify which prog on your PC you wanted to do this. Does this not exist in Firefox? I couldn't find any such thing in my copy... |
Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: nutty Date: 23 Mar 07 - 09:51 AM Why bother changing. I have both Netscape and Firefox on my PC. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 23 Mar 07 - 03:58 PM Last posts first: I have both Netscape and Firefox 2.0.0.3. I have pretty much changed fron Netscape to Firefox in the last month or so, but this new version operates differently than Firefox used to for me. In the version I was using until I incautiously downloaded this latest version, there was a "Mail" icon in the taskbar. Clicking it would activate my Netscape mail browser, accessing Yahoo mail. The new 2.0.0.3 version has no (visible to me) mail access built in. I have to get out of Firefox and go to Netscape to read my mail, which is a pain in the patootie (technical term, there) to have to do every time I want to check my mail. I like Netscape 7.1, which I have, but a few sites I visit require functions that that oldish Netscape version doesn't have. I could download a newer Netscape, but frankly I don't like the user interface nearly as well as 7.1. Dave Oesterreich |
Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: nutty Date: 23 Mar 07 - 04:23 PM You could just bookmark your Yahoo Mail page and put a link to it on the bookmarks toolbar. It wouldn't notify you that you had mail but it would be constantly accessible. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: nutty Date: 23 Mar 07 - 04:58 PM Or you could just put the Yahoo toolbar into your browser. Yahoo Toolbar for Firefox |
Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 23 Mar 07 - 05:18 PM nutty, I thought for a moment that you had something there. I installed the Yahoo toolbar, and now I have a "Mail" icon, but all it does is take me to Yahoo to read mail there, rather than downloading my mail to me. And I don't see how I can access my library of backed-up emails, such as the collection of jokes I've built up. I send out one or more jokes every day to a group of regular joke recipients, and I need to get to my DRAFTS directory where I keep my "ammunition". I long ago gave up on reading mail help in the ISP's facility. I use-- what is it? POP3? Dave Oesterreich |
Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: nutty Date: 23 Mar 07 - 05:35 PM I think you are almost there Dave but you need someone with more technical knowledge than me to explain the next step. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: nutty Date: 23 Mar 07 - 05:38 PM I only know that from my Googlemail Toolbar in Firefox I can send/receive emails from both my Googlemail and Netscape emails. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 23 Mar 07 - 05:53 PM But nutty, do you download and store your emails on your computer, or is it all at the other end? Dave Oesterreich |
Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 24 Mar 07 - 07:39 AM The problem with storing your emails on your PC is that you can lose them all. The problem with storing your emails on on external place that they can lose them all for you. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: JohnInKansas Date: 24 Mar 07 - 11:41 AM 1. Make a shortcut icon for your email program on the desktop. 2. Right click on a blank part of the Start bar, click Properties, and make sure that there is a check mark at "Show the Quick Start Bar." 3. Drag the icon down from the Desktop onto the Quick Start Bar at the left end of the start bar. You may also need to check the setup of your email account to make sure that the program you want is setup as the default email program. John |

Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 01 Apr 07 - 08:34 PM John in Kansas, thanks. That sounds like a real possibility. I downloaded Thunderbird, and was at first quite pleased, but I don't see any way to move a file from one folder (say maybe Trash or Junk, where it has been mistakenly directed) to Drafts or back to Inbox. If there is such a facility there, I'm overlooking it. If it can be done, I'll probably do what you suggested with the quickstart/shortcut approach. Dave Oesterreich |

Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: buckshot Date: 02 Apr 07 - 10:47 AM OK, I'm going to try this one more time. I stumbled one an extension provided by Jim Newberry (Thanks Jim) called 'Get Mail' that put the envelope icon back on the toolbar. Works like a charm. It can be found at: http://webdesigns.ms11.net/chromeditp.html ---> Hal in Texas |
Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: GUEST,Uncle_DaveO Date: 02 Apr 07 - 12:49 PM Buckshot, I've got troubles. I downloaded GetMail, and tried to install it. It gives me Netscape as the only option to open it. So I said yes. Then it says something like "Unable to Open GetMail Because It is not Compatible with Netscape". Huh? Where do I go from here? Dave Oesterreich |
Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: GUEST,buckshot Date: 02 Apr 07 - 04:04 PM Dave, Have you tried this step? Q: I'm having problems setting and accessing the default email program. A: Most problems seem to be with Windows. Please try the steps below one at a time. Step 1. Do the obvious! Make sure the email program you are trying to access is set as default through the program itself. Step 2. Go to Start > Set Program Access and Defaults > click Custom. Set the default email program of choice there. You may need to restart your computer for this change to take affect. Step 3. Use The Windows Default Mail Utility. The Default Mail Utility is at: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/defaultmail.htm I didn't have to play with any of this since Thunderbird was already my default. ---> Hal in Texas |
Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: buckshot Date: 02 Apr 07 - 04:29 PM Dave, I uninstalled and re-installed Get Mail just to see if I ran into the same problem as you. Mine worked fine and found Thunderbird as my default. Sounds to me like you have a setting somewhere that points to Netscape as your default. You might give step 2 in my previous post. I opened Firefox, opened the downloaded file, restarted Firefox and all was fine. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: IvanB Date: 02 Apr 07 - 04:57 PM Dave, right click on the Firefox Toolbar and select "New Bookmark." In the box which appears, enter whatever you want it called on the toolbar ans "name," then enter the complete path to the executable file (including, of course, the executable's name) for your mail program as the "location." The keyword and description boxes can be filled in or not as you wish. When you click on "OK" the 'bookmark' will appear on your toolbar and can be executed from there. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: IvanB Date: 02 Apr 07 - 05:08 PM Well, scratch that notion. It works for me because I point my shortcuts to my mailbox file rather than the executable itself and the executable opens as the default for that type of file. When I entered the executable itself in the Firefox toolbar, it opened a dialogue box, with "save" or "cancel" as the only options to perform on the executable. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: buckshot Date: 02 Apr 07 - 05:35 PM Dave, One more place to check: Start Thunderbird Select Tools --> Options --> (Under the General tab) Check Now This will tell you if Thunderbird is your default. If it isn't, it should give you the option to set it as the default. ---> Hal in Texas |
Subject: RE: Tech: Latest Firefox: How to access email? From: IvanB Date: 02 Apr 07 - 09:23 PM Dave, if your mail program stores mail in a file with a distinctive extension, you can use the hint I expressed above by downloading a Firefox Extension called "MIME Edit 0.52." With this extension installed you can add new file types to Firefox and instruct the program what actions to perform, such as "open with default program" or Open with...." Then, if you place a 'bookmark' with the path to the mailbox file on the toolbar (as I described above), Firefox will automatically open the file with your designated program. The add-on is found here: MIME Edit 0.52 |
