Regular sessions on third Tuesday of each month at the Blaxhall Ship, starting tonight.

Glad Blaxhall Ship is saved Miskin Man and i stayed there on our honeymoon in January 1983.So pleased the singing and music is back in The Ship Anahata.

A fine session it was too, yesterday. I found myself playing for some of the best step dancers I have ever seen and can now die happy. (but not yet please!) And I finally got to meet Terry Davey too.

The pub's been full every night since it re-opened. Apparently the previous owner only opened it three half-days a week and banned most of of the villagers, or was so rude to them (or his staff were) that they never came back. Hint to anyone planning a pub-to-private-dwelling scam: if you really don't want to run a pub, you shouldn't make it that obvious!

We left about teatime, and more people were arriving, including Miskin Man and Jilly who we literally met in the car park as we departed and they arrived. So I hope the music went on all evening.

There will, amongst other things, be a regular monthly session at the Ship, quite apart from any other ad-hoc events that may occur.

So the Ship tradition will continue. This is very good news indeed. Mention of Percy Webb reminds me of my meetings with him, a lively character, a smashing singer. I sang often at the Ipswich folk club in the days when it was at the Gardeners Arms. Percy used to turn up there. He was convinced that I was Rolf Harris and would regularly ask me to sing 'Two Little Boys'. He was an excitable bloke who thoroughly enjoyed his nights at the folk club. It's good to see that his mane is still remembered. There was an excellent Irish fiddler there too, named Monty if I remember correctly. Much success to the Ship and all who sail and sing in her. The White Horse at Whepstead 2nd Tuesday of the month is another good one, though it started recently and doesn't have the aged pedigree of the others.

With my Suffok Folk webmaster's hat on, there is a short "Stop Press" item about the Blaxhall Ship. There isn't anything about the Percy Webb cup yet, but I will put some more info on tonight.

The Ship + the Low House + the Eel's Foot were the main reason I moved to Suffolk, not that I needed much excuse.

The original Percy Webb cup was lost and has not been recovered. However Steve Dickinson thought the tradition was too good a thing to lose forever so had a new cup made, engraved with the names of past winners, and the competition starts again this year.

There was an article about it (and a big picture of shiny new cup) in the last issue of Mardles. I could probably put a copy of it online at the Suffolk Folk web site if you can't find a copy.

Treewind, I had the honour of holding the Percy Webb Cup for a year (about 1992 ish) - do you know where it is these days ? I thought the cup had been lost during the end of Butley era. Would be great to know it's still around.

I can't make the Easter Monday unfortunately but will look forward to any future sessions.

Almost a spiritual home for an East Coast 1-row player like me! Now there's a chance I may yet get to play there after all if I can make it across from exile in Lancashire. This is great news. However....on the down side, sorry to hear of Geoff Ling's loss. Thoughts are with him and the family.

Future sessions?
It's early days yet, but they will happen. Terry is positively encouraging music in the pub, to the extent of paying lots of money to get a music licence for it, which wasn't included in the original license application by the previous landlord.

The singing competition for the Percy Webb Cup will almost certainly be held there instead of the Butley Oyster. There should be articles in Mardles Magazine about the pub and the Percy Webb Cup. I should see the articles this week as I'm doing the typesetting for the mag, but they haven't appeared yet. Any moment now, I hope.

News has just reached us that the Blaxhall Ship pub in Suffolk has just been purchased by a an East Anglian musician, Terry Davey, and the music for which this pub has been renown for the last century will start again on Easter Monday.

Music ceased at the pub when it was purchased, closed, nearly turned into a restaurant, etc., bringing to an end a history of singing, tune playing, step dancing and story telling that had attracted musicians, listeners, folklorists, writers and documentary makers for decades.
