Subject: BS: Dome Glacier Alberta-How's it doing? From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 05 Apr 07 - 01:29 PM In 1969 I photographed the very impressive Dome Glacier in Alberta. In a 2005 photo I saw recently, the glacier looked to be about half it's 40 years ago size. I hope I'm wrong. If there are Canadians who could enlighten me, how is it faring now??? Art |

Subject: RE: BS: Dome Glacier Alberta-How's it doing? From: katlaughing Date: 05 Apr 07 - 11:55 PM Here's what one of them said, Art: Although the Athabasca and Dome glacier at one time coalesced, the Dome glacier has not receded as significantly due to the presence of an insulting moraine cover (Ommanney, 2002). From 1875 to 1919 the glacier receded 530m and 318m from 1919 to 1953. Between the terminal moraine remnants and the present ice front, four recessional moraines appear (1900, 1908, 1913, and 1918) (Ommanney, 2002). Don't know if that explains much, though. |

Subject: RE: BS: Dome Glacier Alberta-How's it doing? From: Peace Date: 06 Apr 07 - 12:04 AM I live a few hours from it, Art. Basically this: as noted above, all the glaciers in the Columbia Icefield are retreating at about 1 mile per 100 years. COLUMBIA ICEFIELD Area: 325 square kilometres (130 square miles), making it the largest body of ice in the Rocky Mountains Highest Point: Mt. Columbia, 3745 m (12,284 ft) Average Elevation: 3000 m (10,000 ft) Greatest Depth (estimated): 365 m (1200 ft) Average Snowfall: 7 m (23 ft) per year Drainage: Pacific, Arctic and Atlantic Oceans |

Subject: RE: BS: Dome Glacier Alberta-How's it doing? From: Ebbie Date: 06 Apr 07 - 12:33 AM "...insulting moraine cover"? Is 'insult' a glaciatic term? Seems like 'insulating' would be more apt. |

Subject: RE: BS: Dome Glacier Alberta-How's it doing? From: Amos Date: 06 Apr 07 - 10:19 AM Glacier: "GEt oudda my way, you useless chunk of rock!" Moraine: "Yeah?? Well your mother was a snowball and your father was an icicle! So there!! Ya overgrown ice-cube, go cool a cocktail! And yer ugly, too!" If we only knew what conversations transpire between the things in the world!!! A |
