I remember Brian from the folk circuit back in the 70s. I used to sing with a duo called Contrast, and did the rounds of Richmond Folk club and The White Rose at Leeming with Mick Sheehan and Pete Beresford and Blue Anchor
I’ve been singing the Richmond Drummer Boy one of Brian’s songs since 1976. I remember Maypole Dancers but sadly don’t have the lyrics to that one. Back gigging again after 45 years and a guest singer with The Dalesfolk.

I too am saddened by his passing. I seem to remember that he sang "Witches of Pendle Hill" Perhaps someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

I remember Brian too, running the folk club at Leeming Bar when I used to go there around the late '70s.

Good singer (he autographed my copy of 'Singer of Songs') and nice guy. Very sorry to hear of his demise.

I remember it well - I also remember the Crofters pretty well, Iain.
I'm now living in Sale, Cheshire and spend more time playing banjo than guitar.
Brian was an all round great bloke and we certainly exchanged a few songs back in the 70s.
I remember that Morris Minor too. I got him a booking at the Sergeant's Mess in Harrogate, his car broke down afterwards and he, therefore, had an unscheduled stay at our house in Harrogate overnight, sorting out the car the following morning.
I still have a cassette tape he produced way back then...

Long time since sadly we lost Brian. 'Singer of Songs' he billed himself. An unusual exploit was a summer party out of doors at his Moulder's/White Rose FC at Leeming Bar with Tug of War and such.
Brian was remembered for many a year at the Darlington Spring Thing. The Sunday Singer Prize Trophy was awarded in his name. The Arts Centre where it happened is now gone too.

what a lovely eulogy, I did not know Brian,but often saw his name guesting at clubs in yorkshire and north east, and ads for his music there can be no better compliment for anyone that they are remembered warmly for their personality and music. Dick Miles

I remember Brian very well and his old Morris Minor with reg number
MOU I believe
I sang with the Crofters and we used to do country meets Folk nights with Brian, he used to run the Post Office at Catterick
He was a super person and we had a great few years playing music together.

Yes I remember him too, as he was my big brother. My name is susan whitmee. He was much loved son of Bob and Janet whitmee and his eldest sister is Anne, Brian was next in line, then Elizabeth, and lastly there was myself. This thread has bought tears to my eyes as its so lovely to think that you kind people think of him, and the joy that he bought when he sat with his guitar and sang.I remember him singing maypole dancers. A brother to be proud of.

The parody I'm 99.99% certain was written by Mick Sheehan from Darlington.(
I remember Brian an extremely nice and gentle guy from Richmond ( N.Yorkshire )who played guitar and sang.Always had time for everyone.
At the time I was talking to him, we were doing a Folk gig at Catterick Camp about 30 Years ago ? he was telling me about problems with his diaphragm ,problems which I believe contributed to his demise. I couldn't have known how serious they were ,we didn't think like that.
As to the parody writer Mick, difficult to get him to sing songs like that anymore,he'll likely tell you he's forgotten it, so you may have to look around and see if anyone has a hookey recording , most likely with someone who was associated with the group Garde Loo who were residents at the Golden Cock in Darlington.
The Parody is truly hilarious, I never learned it because I thought I would never be able to deliver in Mick immaculate dead-pan tones and manner.
Mick has lived at Richmond for many years now and just made a C.D., containing many self-penned songs dealing with social & work issues and history. Well worth a listen.
Darlington Arts Centre may also be a good starting point in your quest.

Does anyone here remember the singer Brian Whitmee, I only ever saw him once at a folk club in Huddersfield back in 1984. He did a marvellously funny parody of the Bobby Goldsboro song 'Honey'.
I eventually got the words to the song from Geoff (Mr. Cleckheaton) Pickles who knew him. The thing is Geoff wasn't sure whether Brian actually wrote the song himself or if he got it from someone else? I'd like to know because I do the song regularly and like to give credit where it's due, can anyone out there help me?
