Subject: BS: A Hockey Question
From: GUEST,Texas Guest

Help me out here Catters. I'm sitting here at my desk on a Saturday afternoon working(a full-time musician can NEVER have "nothing to do") and watching the Penquins and Senators game - good game. During one of the breaks they played a commercial that had Sidney Crosby in it skating about and talking of things he "could control."

I looked up at the very end of the commercial and saw Crosby skating towards an empty net; and, at a short distance from it he stopped, twirled the puck with his stick, caught the puck on his stick and flung the puck into the net much like a LaCrosse player would do with
their little ball in the basket. Question: could he do that in a game? The game is so fast (especially right in front of the goal) that a player probably wouldn't ever have the time to stop, spin the puck and pick it up on the blade of the stick; but, given that he had the time - could he do that? I've never seen anyone do it, so...
Cheers.

Nope - at least, no moreso than a basketball player could stop in the middle of a game and spin the ball for minute on his index finger, or a soccer player could stand and - well, come to think of it, a soccer player COULD -

When he was playing junior hockey for the Rimouski Oceanic, from behind the net he flipped the puck onto the flat of his blade, skated out in front of the net and threw the puck into the goal - it counted.

I think that qualifies as an answer Bobad. I kind of suspected that it would count but I've never seen anyone do it. There would be a
potential for some great control if you had a puck flat on the blade of your stick and you could fling it about. Thanks. Cheers.

I thought there was some rule about carrying the puck that would disqualify (blow the whistle) the play. And if he did it in a game I think that as good as it looks the other players would consider it showboating and it wouldn't go over to well.

You are right about that Beer, Don Cherry took him to task for doing it, called him a hot dog, said that he was showing up the other players and that he had better curb the showboating when he got to the NHL. I think he has done that but has developed a reputation for being a bit of a whiner and crybaby, still he's a good player well on his way to becoming great.

A game composed of the best of curling, jai alai, hockey, and lacrosse. What a crowd pleaser!

From another sport, Larry Bird once said "If you can back it up, it ain't braggin'." Heck, if Sid The Kid can do it, why not. I think it would be very difficult at that level, given how tightly he's marked, and he'd better be ready to get slammed by whoever thinks he's just punked them.

"but has developed a reputation for being a bit of a whiner and crybaby"

Just to clarify: are we talking about Crosby or Cherry?
