Subject: BS: The scavanging British Press From: frogprince Date: 15 Apr 07 - 06:24 PM No, I'm not characterizing the British press that way to troll. Yesterday on U.S. morning television, we saw a note that Andrew has split with his long-time girlfriend. The commentator went on to say that this, and his newly single status, would open up "a whole new game for the scavanging British press". While there is probably some "scavanging" element in the British press, I was almost dumbfounded at the nerve of an American television "journalist" saying that about anyone else's press. To me, it's certainly a prime example of the pot calling anything else black. |

Subject: RE: BS: The scavanging British Press From: bubblyrat Date: 15 Apr 07 - 06:31 PM Or even Scavenging. |
Subject: RE: BS: The scavanging British Press From: Ebbie Date: 15 Apr 07 - 06:34 PM Come to think of it, 'scavenging' is not necessarily a derogatory term- literally meaning 'digging'. Spelling it scavanging, however, kind of implies an element of savagery. Sorry, FP- I'm just funnin'. |
Subject: RE: BS: The scavanging British Press From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 15 Apr 07 - 06:37 PM The British tabloid press aren't scavengers. They'd have to improve an awful lot to reach those heights. The broadsheets are little better. This poor kid has committed the crime of asking for just a little privacy. She has not sought publicity as Di was wont to do. Now they are not satisfied with the split, but feel that they have the right to slag her off ad lib. Declare open season, I say, and let the countryside alliance hunt them with dogs. Don T. |
Subject: RE: BS: The scavanging British Press From: artbrooks Date: 15 Apr 07 - 07:02 PM On the issue of the pot and the kettle, IMHO it depends entirely on the commentator and the station/network/publication. Some in the US, like some in the UK, do a much better job of reporting news rather than stirring up muck than do others. |
Subject: RE: BS: The scavanging British Press From: GUEST,Ash Date: 15 Apr 07 - 07:02 PM Yes, another scrounger set for the playboy lifestyle at the taxpayers expense. Remember his fathers romps ? Susan George headed a string of bevy's in the seventies. |
Subject: RE: BS: The scavanging British Press From: GUEST,meself Date: 15 Apr 07 - 07:05 PM Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the American press pursues its First Families with the rapacious vigour with which the British tabloids go after the Royals ... |
Subject: RE: BS: The scavanging British Press From: Sorcha Date: 15 Apr 07 - 08:00 PM I think the poor girl did the right thing. It's not a job or a family any sane person would want. |
Subject: RE: BS: The scavanging British Press From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 15 Apr 07 - 08:43 PM we have 2 Sunday papers & the tabloid put a half-page pic on the cover with story on p.9, the staid one "just" had a mini-pic on the cover with story on p.5. Both had a three quarter page story, the p. 5 story included a pic of paparazzi camera almost touching her hand as she tried to cover her face (eyes?) I eagerly await the scandal magazines pouring into the newsagents in the next few days. This survey has finished as I doubt the newsagents would like me counting coverage in their magazines! aren't we lucky we live quiet unremarked lives? I hope Kate can now live such a life. sandra |
Subject: RE: BS: The scavanging British Press From: frogprince Date: 15 Apr 07 - 09:58 PM Yes, 'scuse me, of course it's William. I haven't seen our local supermarket rags, but they will have about as happy a feeding frenzy as the ones in the UK. When it comes to things like this, they think globally. I don't know if the ones over there will be just as free to print outright creepy lies, or not. |

Subject: RE: BS: The scavanging British Press From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 16 Apr 07 - 03:41 AM I would never call the press, British or otherwise, "scavengers". It's an insult to real scavengers, which perform a very useful function in nature. "Parasites" is a much better description. |
Subject: RE: BS: The scavanging British Press From: alanabit Date: 16 Apr 07 - 07:19 AM The fact that an American calls our press "scavengers" does not make it any less true. Public voyeurism is always a pretty unedifying spectacle. I try to get my news from sources, which do not try to tell me all the crap, which I do not need to know. |
Subject: RE: BS: The scavanging British Press From: GUEST,NO. 1 Member of the MC-army Date: 17 Apr 07 - 06:38 AM It's true. I am british and i know that if there is a story some of the press will be there. They came to our school when they found out that the library had been using thumbprints as an identification method. They even tried to interview us (our band 'One For Sorrw') because we are supposed to be the youngest known band that have stayed together for over a year and half. I know at least three younger bands who have been together 2 years. What idiots. Me MCR Rule so dont forget it. They make great music. Respect them. |
