It is with the deepest sadness that I have to tell you that Peter died shortly after 7.00 AM Spanish time (6.00 in England). He was not expected to last the night but, fighter that he was, he hung on till the sun came up this morning.
Val has asked me to inform as many people as possible and as soon as possible. She has expressed a wish to have hime flown home, that we may give him the best funeral possible.
I have known, worked and played with Peter for nearly 40 years and I mourn his loss.
My heart goes out to all his family - in particular to Charlotte and Tamsin.
God bless you all.
Bloss

We, at Gundulf, are all thinking of you.

The old man's gone
At a great age too
Farewell to the master of them all
Now the old man's gone.

Originally written by the Keelers for Stan Hugill, but just as applicable now. I sang it last night at the Second Time Around (Beeston, Notts) just after I heard the news.

I am so sad,Val, Charlotte and Tamsin my love to you and hugs.
Pete was a wonderful friend, I met him in 1969, he never changed, always cheerful, very funny,a great performer on stage or at a party!I remember at Bills 50th, he changed into his cowboy suit in the lane outside, to the amusement of our neighbours and sat singing till the wee hours of the morning playing his 12 string and did not repeat a single song.
Bill and I and Samantha and Christopher will miss him so much but will remember all the happy nights at Farningham.
So now Pete, Dave Brient and Brixton Bert ,what a trio in heaven!
all my love Wendy

I for once am speechless and so sad to hear the news. The last chorus of "Fair Winds & A Following Sea" by Tom Lewis springs to mind.

"And those of us left here will miss a true friend
Who shared with us good times and bad.
Raising a glass to your memory, we'll say:
"We've known you… why should we be sad?".
We honour a life that was lived to the full,
We honour a spirit now free,
You'll be long remembered whenever we say:
Fair Winds and a Following Sea"

but it doesn't help.

Sending lots and lots of love and hugs to Val,Charlotte,Tamsin,Bloss and all his family and friends.
He was a one off !!!

Thank you to one and all for all the love you have sent us over the last nearly 4 weeks. It has kept us going. Pete was a character, and there,s not of them left in this world. I was very very lucky to have been with him, compared with some of you for a short while. We along with a lot of others will have a great big hole in our lives.
I will keep you posted as to when and where we will be celebrating the life of a very special man.All my love and I will be collecting all the cuddles when I get home.

I would like to add condolences from my wife and myself. I met Pete at Dartford in 1971, just before The Crayfolk cut their LP, which I still have, and still play, and still laugh at his intros, and still sing Peggy Gordon and Three Score and Ten just as he did. I even managed to find a harmonica player to accompany me last time. As so many others have said, he was a tremendous influence on my singing, and the influence he had on so many people is a great legacy.

From: GUEST,Paul in Canada
Date: 12 May 07 - 07:41 PM

A very sad day indeed. I had thought he was going to pull through this one and bless us with his music and his soul for many more years to come. It is obvious of what kind of impact he had on us all by reading the posts on this site. I cannot find the words to explain the connection I had to my uncle Pete but his music provided much comfort to me in my early years when we emmigrated to Canada and was the very reason that I have and continue to fumble away at the guitar. I am going to list some of the memories that come to mind.

Broadstairs Festival when I was 5 (getting lost at the ice cream shop)
Pete never believing in having a tax sticker
Walking up to the front of the Coach House to ask him to play Fie man Fie
Bringing him beer to the stage at the Coach House
The giant crocodile
Pete living with us and then moving in next door on Crayford Road
Guy Fawks night at his place - don't remember where it was but was a second floor apartment - I think Terry lived with him for awhile and had a set of false boobies
Morning walks with Gypsy and Rastus
The stereo he hand built for my Dad
The Gibson guitar he had stolen
Hanging out with him and Grandad and Pete leaving me standing on the curb completely forgetting to drive me home
The night before we left for Canada and him playing all night long
The Hartley Morris Horse - I still have Dad's rosettes
His first visit to Canada and my pub
The pig roast at the farm for the football team and Pete playing
My visit for Pete and Vals wedding with Big T. (Big T will be sad)
Algonquin with Val and Pete - Pete tipping both him and Val after about two hours in - the rescue and the "no problem let's keep going"
Dad dying and Pete and Blossom playing to celebrate Dad's life.

There are many more memories and because he has given us the gift of his music he will never really be gone.

Love and Best wishes to all of you that share this sad day.

Paul

Since those days at the Railway in dartford and before that when the Crayfolk came to catford Rising Sun I've always thought and remembered of Pete singing the 'irish Rover' and my version uses his influences.

with talent he got more out of a song and thus became an entertiner with his natural wit and charm.

he was a sincere and decent fella

though i only met him again at dave Bryants wake at the Tudor he hadnt changed, he was and always had been a lovely character

he also got a small club in Eltham out of the shit when I ran it for 5 weeks to help get the chap who had ran his money back, which we did, than closed down.

thanks pete

What a great guy he was and will be always remembered as

What a   singer too

Dear all it is so lovely to keep receiving all your good wishes and is some comfort to know that he is so well thought of, dad always said that his grandad and dad died at the age of 66 and that he would go the same time but after his birthday in january i told him that he was talking aload of old rubbish, my dad was rarely wrong but just wish he could have been on this occasion. I am going to miss him sooo much and think i will probably prevent any water shortage this year with the amount of tears i am crying. i look forward to meeting up with you all when we celebrate dads life and just in case he can read this where he is I LOVE YOU SO MUCH DAD AND NEED YOU.
