I did a mental inventory of the comedians I have heard, and I can come up with only one who hasn't made fun of some group or other. That is Jerry Seinfeld. Everyone else has had their turn on at least one group. Prove me wrong.

Martin Lewis converts and becomes a priest. He gives his first Mass in front of a number of high ranking priests who came for the occasion. At the end of the new priest's sermon, a cardinal goes up to congratulate him. "Pastor Lewis," he said, "That was very well done, you were just perfect. But next time, please don't start your sermon with, "Fellow Goyim..."

To me that's funny.

Gentle (not 'gentile') humor poking fun at our human foibles, which 'sometimes' include noting how stereotypes are based in reality, can help us gain perspective.

Sadly, some can't tell when they are crossing the line from gentle to insulting. If in doubt, don't say it.

oh...and I don't believe I ever heard Red Skelton insult any race...or George Gobel...or Ernie Kovacs....

I'd have to think about whether Sid Caesar's stuff was 'insulting' or not...he certainly did USE streotypes to make a point, but I never herad any complaints. Same with Mel Brooks.

yes Bill it is important for us to be kind.

Bill you may be funny at times but you are not a professional comedian.


I feel that Bill Mahre, George Carlin and Lewis Black have the greatest integrity among their fellow comedians because they tell the truth regardless of how gentle or hard it is.

I am sure he offends scads of people, but nothing is sacrosanct with Carlos Mencia. He gives us all a glimpse of uncomfortable thoughts, beliefs, etc. that we may not even know we hold. It took me awhile to *get* his humour, but I now make it a point to watch his show. He also has a very sincere humanity which shines through, at time; a sincerity for people to get rid of their prejudices and come together.

ooohh...no, I'm sorry...I can't take Mencia. I have stumbled on him several times, and just don't find his 'sincerity' entertaining.

(nope, Donuel...I wouldn't DARE try to be a professional comedian. My humor is way too slow)
