Subject: RE: Review: Skagen Festival From: Fidjit Date: 26 Apr 07 - 03:24 AM Ah! I likes a nice bit of bacon Bente. Look forward to it. Shared "Bacon Butty's" with Snuffy at Miskin 2006. So he's another that likes 'em. Johnny Silvo is there too. Bugger broke strings on my guitar at the Trubadour, way back in '68. Chas |

Subject: RE: Review: Skagen Festival From: bfdk Date: 26 Apr 07 - 08:30 AM Lots of bacon around here, as we've lots of pigs. At Skagen, however, you're much more likely to run into fish dishes of various descriptions :-) Hmmm.. someone broke strings on your guitar back in '68, and you still remember today?? Best not get on the wrong side of you, I reckon, you'd never forget ;-) See you at Skagen! Best wishes, Bente |

Subject: RE: Review: Skagen Festival From: bfdk Date: 24 Jun 07 - 07:18 AM Have fun! I missed out on tickets to that venue (sold out :-(( ). I will get to see the McCalmans on Sunday night, though. Of the free stuff I'll definitely be taking a good look at all them Morris men ;-) And I'm not going to miss the LPSO, BordererS and Wongawilli, either. See you there, possibly! Best wishes, Bente |

Subject: RE: Review: Skagen Festival From: Teribus Date: 10 Jul 07 - 04:36 AM Well, how many went? The weather was atrocious for the most of it, very wet and very windy. Of the acts that bente was looking forward to: London Philharmonic Skiffle Orchestra - were absolutely fantastic Wongawilli - did not appear because they were ill and had withdraw BordererS - loud, frenetic and just a bit too gimmicky, but you have to remember (myself in particular) that it is the Skagen Festival, not, the Skagen Folk Festival - all/any type of music can be presented. The Friday night concert was amazing (Beggars Row; The Young Dubliners & Runrig) Johnny Silvo appeared and was very impressive, as always. A young band from N.I. Aontas were outstanding, to anybody reading this if you ever get the chance to see them live do so, you will not regret it. |

Subject: RE: Review: Skagen Festival From: bfdk Date: 10 Jul 07 - 05:06 AM You should have PM'd me your cellphone number, we could have made a mini Mudcat gathering up there :-) I was there, had a great - but wet!! - time, met up with Chas and Snuffy, had a proposal for my hand in marriage from a *very* drunk mummer, had Alex of the BordererS dancing on the bench I was sitting on, right in front of my camera lens (and she sang "Shelter" at my request, too), was dragged on stage by the LPSO and made to "play" washboard in front of a sizeable crowd (Martyn Oram, I'll get you for this, and that's a promise. Be afraid, be very afraid!!). Saw some of the Morris dancers (unfortunately not Snuffy's side, they were in the other tent at the same time). Oh.. and I got a hug from Johnny Silvo, Chas introduced me to him.. (*flutters eyelashes :o)) Yup, he's one heck of a performer that 'un. I've got heaps of photos to sort through, will post a link once I get them online. Best wishes, Bente |

Subject: RE: Review: Skagen Festival From: Snuffy Date: 10 Jul 07 - 12:20 PM Despite everything that Ryanair and the weather could throw at us, we had a thoroughly enjoyable time at Skagen. I didn't really get much time to look into many of the concerts, but could hear quite a bit of them - lost count of the times we heard Whiskey in the Jar and I'll Tell Me Ma, not forgetting Wild Mountain Thyme. There didn't seem to be anything we Brits would recognise as a fringe, but we morris men had some nice sessions in the musicians bar at the Harbour, at a historic hotel, and at a pub in town (before we were asked to desist!). And it was great to have Chas (Fidjit) playing along with us in the sessions. Unfortunately the mini-Mudgather (me, Fidjit and bfdk) did not last very long, as Bente was hi-jacked by amorous mummers and we had to shoot off to dance elsewhere almost as soon as we had finished lunch. Must plan it better next time! |

Subject: RE: Review: Skagen Festival From: John MacKenzie Date: 10 Jul 07 - 02:14 PM That Mummer says, can he have his white stick back please B :)) And where are the proceeds of the raffle from the Mudcat meet? I broke a string on Johnny's guitar once if that makes you feel any better Fidjit! Giok |

Subject: RE: Review: Skagen Festival From: Fidjit Date: 14 Jul 07 - 05:51 AM Ah! Here we are again. Hard disc crashed on my old computer. Rainy day money came to good use for the new one. Here we go. Did I Say rainy day? There was enough rain in Skagen to wet everyone. Hang about. hang about. Arms out, Arms out, Thumbs up. Thumbs up. Rat ata. Rat a ta. I'm singing in the rain. etc. Well we did a lot of that. I was supposed to be camping, but the tent never went up. I slept in the car instead. I counted twenty, Wiskey in the jars. Five I'll tell me ma's. Three wild rovers. There were probably more, but then I wasn't everywhere. For my money a group singing and playing Bluegass did it for me From Belgium! Would you believe! Double Bass,. Banjo, Mandolin, Fiddle and Guitar FOUR WHEEL DRIVE was the name. Singing close harmonies old timey music all acoustic and just around ONE microphone! Great stuff. Great to meet up with Snuffy. No bacon buttys this time. Didn't see a lot of bacon at all. I think they must export it all. Allan too. An old Straw bear face. And Bente from off here. Never without her camera. I saw the guy that proposed to you. I think you can do better. I mean, come on, he was from Birmingham! The Skagen Ceilidh isn't a ceilidh. Just a showcase of the artists doing the concerts. The Skagen Shanty Session wasn't. It was another showcase. Catch up with you all again later. Chas |

Subject: RE: Review: Skagen Festival From: Teribus Date: 15 Jul 07 - 12:43 PM Hi Chas, The performers who appeared at the Ceilidh were briefed to play for the crowd, if they were going to sing songs they were supposed to be standards that people could sing along to, failing that they should have a chorus that people could join in with. Some groups did try to follow instructions, but as you said the vast majority did not, the jam session that was going on back stage was ten times better than what was happening onstage. The Sunday Shanty Session should have been "Spot the Shanty". It is not strictly speaking a shanty session but the instructions are to theme your material either to shanties or seasongs. Some did but they were very few. I have yet to look up details about the Swedish guy who came on and blocked the whole thing with lengthy introductions to his songs at both the Ceilidh and the Shanty Session complete and utter waste of time, at both the better acts seemed to get the least time. But for all that I certainly enjoyed the festival, some very good singers and performers. I agree that 4 Wheel Drive were superb, they are regarded as being the best bluegrass band in Europe I believe. |
