Here's a real neat piece of information, folks, from the world of science. Some research scientest fella down in Tennessee named Randolph Blake has found out somethin' interesting about that really annoying sound of nails screechin' on a blackboard...

"The acoustics prize honoured research into another of those timeless questions, why do fingernails screeching on a blackboard send chills down the spine of virtually everyone who hears the sound?

Volunteers rated the sound of a three-pronged garden rake on slate top of the annoyance scale, followed by metal on metal and Styrofoam rubbing against itself, says Randolph Blake, now at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, US.

His experiments showed the frequencies in the middle of the audio range were the ones that drove people up the wall. Blake says chimpanzee warning cries "are remarkably similar to fingernails on a chalkboard". It is possible our reactions are instinctive, hearkening back to warning signals screeched by our pre-human ancestors when they spotted a sabre-tooth on the prowl, he suggests.

Blake shares the prize with former colleagues Lynn Halpern and James Hillenbrand.

Pretty cool, huh? I have used "the screech" on any number of occasions and I can tell ya, it drives people nuts! LOL! I use it to put gunsels off their aim. Really freaks 'em out. It is a great attention-getter.

Try it, Chongo - it does make a sound, a gritty, crunchy, yet swooshy sound - I don't mind it, but I can see hw it might bug someone.

No kiddin'? Okay, I will give it a try. I can always use another gimmick for questioning suspects and witnesses who ain't inclined to be too cooperative. What temperature should the butter be? How soft?

Now it's a music thread!

MY HEART'S IN CAPE BRETON TONIGHT
Words and Music by Steve Romanoff

It's a Saturday night, and we're out on the town,
My new friends and me, all alone,
We will sing the old lovesongs,
We'll make toasts all around,
To living, to loving, to home,
Then I think of just how much I miss you,
And it seems I've been out here for years,
Then someone will play an old fiddle tune,
And I'll have to hold back the tears...

So forgive me, my friends, if I seem far away,
In a moment I should be all right,
Though my hands hold me here, working day after day,
My heart's in Cape Breton, tonight.

Since I left Nova Scotia for the work I have found,
I have kept all my memories within,
Of the warm nights and laughter in Waterford Town,
Or the lights on the causeway with the fog rollin' in.
Then I think of just how much I miss you,
And it seems I've been out here for years,
Then someone will play an old fiddle tune,
And I start to find my way home...

So I get to my fiance's place, but I don't see her anywhere; I just figure she's stepped out to her friend's next door or somethin'. I hear her washing machine, which is in the john, running. I step in there to drain the weasel. It isn't the washing machine running; it's the shower. She isn't accustomed yet to finding me standing there when she steps out of the shower.

I've never heard a SCREEEEEECH quite like that before or since. : )

(Nor have I seen anything lovlier to me).

...chimpanzee warning cries "are remarkably similar to fingernails on a chalkboard".

So when we think "chimpanzee" we shouldn't think "ferocious" or "menacing, merely "annoying".

Your wish is my command, Brett. Address still the same? I should make you bring Wakana here for a visit and Christmas Tree Shop tour. Then you can find your own Screech. I bought Screech for the name and then discovered it was something of a legend when Peter and Joanne Souza showed up. Those two are another reason you need to get back to Maine.

Well, Gnu, I have a carved puffin here in Guam and Sins says she'll send me some Screech, but I don't feel that I could follow those instructions honestly because I have never been to Newfoundland. However, I am familiar with the rivalry between the Newfies and the Novies. Here is a taste. It's better done in person.

How does a Newfie count fish?

He has two baskets, one full of fish and one empty.

He picks up a fish from the full basket and sets it in the empty basket.

"One fish."

He transfers another fish.

"Two fish"

He picks up another fish. A look of confusion crosses his face. He concentrates. He smiles widely.

"'Nudder fish, nudder fish, nudder fish, nudder fish, nudder fish, nudder fish, nudder fish, nudder fish, nudder fish, nudder fish, nudder fish, nudder fish, nudder fish..."

For me, it's the sound of your average TV or commercial radio station going on...and on...and on...and on...

I want to do violence to something after awhile. Elvis had the right idea when he shot up his TV with a handgun.

Last night Wakana and I were watching a program we'd recorded. As we ran fast forward through the commercials she once again expressed her surprise at the sheer number of commercials. On Japanese TV they do not take up all the watching time with commercials.

For me, the most irritating sounds I know are the English Public-School accents, whether the yapping quack of some or the lazy drawl of others, the latter once described as an "articulated yawn".

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: BS: SCREEEEEEECH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From: GUEST,Ms Penelope Rutledge

The articulated yawn, my dear fellow, is an affectation of those who are aspiring toward an upper class existence which forever lurks tantalizingly just out of their reach...or alternatively, those who are mired in it already but cannot quite decide what it's really all for. While such things can be annoying, one should learn to have compassion for one's fellow humans and just put up with it.

I personally find the loud "blathering at the bar" which monied gentlemen and their friends engage in whilst trying to impress one another far more irritating. There is a certain tolerance that should be extended toward the young, I feel, as they are finding their way in life and can be expected to make errors. Men past the age of 35, however, should have gained enough wisdom to demonstrate a little maturity, don't you think? In other words, for them it is well "past curfew".

Tend to agree that the loud "Me Me Me" verbalizing to which Ms PR refers is intensely annoying, but still find the actual SOUND of the articulated yawn and the quack-quack-quack-yaah affected accents to be irritating in and of themselves. I remember some twenty years ago, taking the Train from London to Windsor, being forced to endure a "conversation" bewteen two women which consisted entirely of how much their houses were worth and how much their most recent holidays had cost. If it were a genuine "conversation", what pathetic lives these people lead. If it were designed as an elaborate Public School "joke" at the expense of an impecunious Northerner, what pathetic lives these people lead.
