From: George Papavgeris
Date: 12 May 07 - 03:01 PM

A website is now up with info on the artists appearing, a map of the place with the vanues, and (soon) a programme: Bude Folk Festival.

Lucy, I have you as contact for camping, pending alternative contact details.

See you there - it's one hell of a lineup!
I'll be the one in the Bermuda shorts (not).

I love you George! What a star! Thank you so much. What a line-up it is! Thank you all so much for your kindness and generosity _ couldn't have got this far without you.
Things this end as you are all probably able to understand have been somewhat fraught, with a crashed computer, the death of a good friend with a Funeral on Thursday at which I have to write and read the eulogy to get through - and family members having strokes I have not really known whether I was coming or going! I am now on my daughters laptop, have had a weekend away on dartmoor at the fox & hounds with superb singing and good company and am back feeling refreshed and de-stressed!
Bear with me for today, I have a meeting before the Bude Folk Club tonight, to sort out the final arrangements and then we will be able to answer all those programming and camping questions properly!
Whatever people say, Mudcat may not always be sweetness and light but you really are all a great bunch of people, I am honoured to know you, be it personally or as e-friends, and throughout the past not too brilliant week, I have had a great bunch of friends lifting me up and carrying me, it has been much appreciated, This is what Mudcat is all about.
Cheers, and thanks all (but especially George! - and Roger who started the begging thread for me!)
Lucy (who is cookieless!)

Well I thought I knew most artists on the folk scene but I only recognise four of the names on the Bude artists list. Nineteen are complete unknowns. And it maybe twenty unknowns if the 'George Wilson' listed isn't the mighty George Wilson from Hampshire.

Dee, come along and listen - and then you can be familiar with ALL the names on the list! I'm certainly looking forward to meeting some new faces as well as some old friends.

I understand, Dee. Most of them would be "unknowns" to all but those in a given geographical spread, as they are not regular "touring" artists, or "big names". But as I get about the country touring, I have got to meet, or at least hear of, most of those on the list.

They represent the quality layer in the non-full-time-professional artist category. Well worth listening to, and twice the value given the price of the ticket (zero).

Well Dee, as a free festival, You wouldn't really expect to get the HUGE professional names, but I have to say that I am delighted with the line-up, who are, as George says, the quality layer in the non-full time professional artist category. I know that those coming will enjoy what we have to offer, and what makes it great for me is that not only are they worthy of being there, they are all nice people too! There are many unsung heroes in folk music, quality acts that never leave their county boundaries, They all contribute to the rich tapestry that Folk Music is, and for me are what folk music is all about. You can pay big money to go and see your big names, but I have to say sometimes it doesnt mean it will be good!
Wkkipedia says: The Tech Multimedia Music Dictionary defines folk as "music of the common people that has been passed on by memorization or repetition rather than by writing, and has deep roots in its own culture
A festival is an event, usually staged by a local community, which centers on some unique aspect of that community.
Hopefully we have ticked those boxes, and thats what we are offering!
Cheers, Lucy

Brilliant stuff George, you've been working hard! I'll be looking out for you, bermuda shorts notwithstanding, and will try to keep your fan club in line - so you can issue hugs *grin*

Well done Lucy, for letting George loose on the web on Bude's behalf!! Missed you this morning but am glad to see that you're somewhat refreshed. Enjoy Club tonight and I hope you don't get too frazzled over the next couple of weeks. Really enjoyed hearing you sing again Girlie!!

Dee, George Wilson is indeed the 'Mighty George Wilson' from Hampshire, and is known as the loveable 'Geordie-Peorgie' here on the MudCat.

Oh, and Hi - I'm Hilary Ward, almost completely unknown *I'll get me coat*

Hi Lucy

I'm the bloke who plays the harmonica every other Friday at The Tree (hello, howya!). I've spent the last half hour trying to find out anything at all (venues, guests, etc.) about the folk festival but to no avail. The website link don't work! All I know is that I'm playing at The Tree with a couple of other fellers on the Friday night. I've scoured the latest Stude and Bratton and can find nowt. Where's the publicity??

Cheers!

Hi Steve, if you click the link in the second (not the first post, that didn't work) post of George's on this thread you'll get into the web-page he's created. I checked earlier & it's working fine!

Posters and card flyers were at the Fox and Hounds Song & Ale this weekend and Lucy will be hard at work sorting stuff this week after the meeting at Bude Club tonight. As soon as Lucy knows what can be done I'm sure she'll let us all know and I'll be looking forward to hearing you play over the weekend.

Maybe if there's a time you won't be available you could let her know? As a registered member you can send a 'PM' (private message) to her, just click the Blue 'PM' next to her name 'Hawker', at the top of one of her posts.

Cheers,
Hil

Thank you for pointing me to the correct link there, Hil. I am in fact one-third of Three In The Bush. Our home pub is The Tree. Many moons ago there was a folk club there run wonderfully by John Maughan (aka The Boscastle Busker), but for the last ten years or more there's been a fortnightly session revolving around the three of us but with plenty of support.

Steve, Bude folk Club opened its doors on the 22nd April at The Falcon, Bude, The first one was a quiet affair, as it wasn't widely advertised, as we sort of just bit the bullet and went for it within a couple of weeks. The second one was tonight, it was well advertised, verbally, with posters, on Mudcat and in The Cornish and Devon Post, (local paper) The advertising obviously worked 'cos the room was packed! We were lucky to be blessed with Canberra Chris' presence from Australia (one of the Shiny Bum Singers) What a lovely chap and what a lovely voice! we really are in for a treat!
The festival is unfunded, so we are not paying for ads, there are press releases out for this week, so you should see something then, The local Gazette had something in last week, Posters are out and being posted as we speak, as are flyers and the like, As part of the festival guest list, perhaps you would like some, to ditribute, i'll leave some with Emma at the Tree when I visit on Wednesday.
Hope to see you at the next folk club, on the 10th June!
Cheers, Lucy

Bless you Geordie - would be lovely to have a bit of a sing with your guitar one day, looking forward to it!

Really looking forward to the Festival, especially getting to see the 'Shiny Bums'!! Staying at the Rugby Club in the Van, anyone else there or will we be on our own?

We'll be stopping down in the Cornwall area for the following week as we're going to a sing in Devon the weekend after, so we'll be pottering around doing tourist stuff & looking for singing. Hope to bump into Breezy and possibly Fleggy on Padstow harbour during that week, but all other suggestions will be gratefully received.

May be off-line for a while as I'll be wiping our hard drive again tomorrow in the hopes we can get it to re-partition properly this time. If I can't get it working this weekend then I'll check in again from work on Monday, so don't worry if I'm not around for a few days! Would be nice to keep this thread up near the top if possible.

Sorry to have been off-line, and on non-cookie as I can't get into my regular internet access so can't get PMs.

Amazing driving schedule so far between Kent and Cornwall, everyone wonderful, and things falling into place for the Shiny Bum tour. We are really looking forward to Bude, only regret that our schedule also has the Rochester Good Intent gig on the Sunday of the same weekend (be there from noon if over east). I am still quartering the countryside setting things up, about to head from Redhill back west to Exeter, then back again to pick up incoming Bums from Heathrow early Friday.

we are also performing for UK 'shiny bums', at the Dept for Transport, National School of Government, and Met Office, partly with thanks to Herga Kitty, whose cover I won't blow. The Ryan Shiny Bums have been to Herga and met Kitty, while I have been preoccupied imitating a table tennis ball across the width of England - no complaints about the views!

Thanks to all with arrangements so far, we will try to live up to your hospitality.

Canberra Chris

GP - looks like we have the makings of Port & Cheese parties at the Rugby Club then, will save up any currently in the fridge & see what can be added in!! Sorry to hear about the poorly JennyPen, hope she gives herself time to recover properly. BTW, agree The Lovely Shirl name, sign up Girlie - I'll get you singing yet!

Breezy, sounds from your text you got a hectic day today so I'll save the Choccie Bikkies for another time - may bring them to Padstow harbour so you can have a tea-break whilst others busk on your behalf.

So sorry you'll be missing this Sue, but know you'll have a Fab time at Chippenham!

Hillary & Geordie Peorgie - - - How can you do this to me*!$£*&*

You'll be scoffing Port & Cheese while I'm stuck in Kent. We arranged for youngest daughter to be home over Whitsun so we're unable to come to the festival. I'm right fed up now, I'm even crying in my beer:-)

Have a lovely time, and Geordie - give hugs to Jenny and hope she gets well soon, and tell her that her 'other dad' is wishing her well.

Back on-line again but only temporarily, will need to install another new hard drive in a few weeks after my first carpal tunnell op.

Really looking forward to this, it looks like it's going to be one of those lovely relaxing weekends with good music, company and Port & Cheese (stop diluting that beer Mr Barden, it'll get too salty *grin*)!! Just hope that Lady Fate is playing on our side too and brings good weather and safe travelling to all.

Also hope to get to see Breezy 'do his thing' on Padstow harbour sometime the week afterwards and also going to try to get to the Wellie session in Boscastle. Haven't been past the Devon border since my honeymoon in 1989 so I hope my passport's still valid!

Hope to make it down Saturday morning/mid-day. Sadly I'll miss the Shiny Bums if they're only around on Friday as I have to work until gone 4pm and even with the best will in the world and a following wind, I can't make it down there for 8.30pm.

Hills, if we don't get to sing together (which I hope we do) during the weekend, I'm around for a while on Bank holiday Monday. How about us gate-crashing Breezy's spot on the harbour? We do outnumber him and we can be 'The Breezettes and Breezy' and not just 'Breezy and the Breezettes'.

Well, I am just off to the survivors session at the Tree Inn, I am VERY tired! but WOW! What a wonderful lot you all are, it wouldn't have happened without you all - and it really did 'happen!' I will give a more informed report and post photos later, but suffice to say that it all exceeded my wildest dreams - from start to finish and all my fears (which were Huge) were dismissed.
There WILL be a Bude festival next year, and for those who were there this year, priority will be a motorised link between the two venues. I also feel it will be better to keep it small and intimate and not go too big too soon.
Thank you Thank you Thank you all, I am now going to fulfill my vow to ONLY drink rum today!

Absolutely brilliant! A sort of Miskin without the children's events and Morris (more time to organise those for next year), but with a great ceilidgh and significant townie participation. Plus some great Cornish songwriters - it's quite something to hear "Cornish lads" and "Swallow's wing" from the source (despite your excellent renditions, Breezy)! Plus welcoming, bagpipe-playing landlords. Plus the first recorded instance of Mudcatter 4-hand guitar accompaniment (see here). Stunning performance from the Shiny Bums (the keyboard Morris is my favourite). Plus some amazing performances from George Wilson, Anne Lister, Sara Deere-Jones with Phil Williams, the Willows, Lucy and Kevin, the Cavaliers (great family band!), Breezy, Hilary, Roger Bryant, Roger Mills and Annie, Jerry and Hilary Bix, Jon Heslop, Andy, Mary, heck - EVERYONE raised their standard and gave us some wonderful moments.

THANK YOU Lucy and Kevin - love to Amber and Tamsyn. And I can now say that I have known the real Hawker (he-he)! Roger M, bedankt voor het smakelijke tijden en de word-spellen!

And the Doombar and the Proper Job were lovely. And the oggies tasty.

Roll on Bude 2008!

Well, what can I say. Not bad for a first effort!

Only joking Lucy. We had a lovely lovely time, thank you.

Hunt the Tree Inn, now that was a goodun, from the map it looked like it was just up the road, well I suppose it was really!

Good services at the Rugby Club, lovely view, port and cheese party, transport laid on by caravaners for us campervan peeps. But most of all we met so many lovely people that we were able to sit and chat to as well as listen to and join in with wonderful music and song. Roll on next year

As an infrequent visitor to Mudcat, part time folkie and full time idiot, I'd like to add my thanks to all those that made this event the very enjoyable experience it was. Thanks also to everyone who made me welcome and feel like a member of 'the family'.
I'm nor sure about the etiquette of linking to personal photographs so if I'm breaking the rules, I apologise but here are a few of the 'least bad' pikkies that I took, including a couple of the now infamous 4 handed guitar accompaniment to one of MGAS's songs.

Harmony Angel, thank you so much for sharing those photos with us, they are lovely!. I have jusy put mine on Flickr HERE

Well where do I start telling all those who missed it, what they missed? It is hard to put into words! The Shiny Bums were absolutely superb, as were all the other folk club guests on the Friday night, and the warm and friendly atmosphere just added to the occasion at The Barn Bar at The Tree Inn. Three In a Bush were enjoyed by all in the Beville Bar too. At the Falcon, there was music and a great night was had by all there too, with the help of Friggin' Riggin'

Saturdays walk was really interesting, led by Andy Thorpe,I even learned things I didn't know about the place where I have lived for 18 years!
The big sing at the Falcon that followed was lovely, we had an amazing array of talent! I am afraid to mention them all, incase I miss anyone, but I have to say I was delighted that Tony Truscott made it to the festival if only for a short time.
I was very disappointed that Anne Lister didnt get any takers for the story telling at The Brasserie, but her performances in the big sing and the evening concert at the Tree Inn made me wish that I had had the time to go and listen, as I am sure it did many others.
The Saturday evening Concert at The Tree Inn was a stunner! what a line up we had to enjoy - and everybody was again welcoming and friendly. Several acts reduced me to tears - either with their moving songs or hysterical jokes which seemed to be very infectious. Phil Williams and Sarah Deere-Jones were stunning, and though I dont think many there had heard of them before, I think they will remember them in future. The Landlord was drafted in to replace an act unable tocome and wowed us with a stunning performance on the highland pipes - ending the evening of course with the Cornish National Anthem - Trelawney This all happened in the Bran Bar, at the Tree Inn, The Salty Dogs II had the Beville bar absolutely jam packed too with thier wonderful music and, while this was going on, I believe there was a good session happening at the Falcon Inn too.
Sunday walk with Harry didn't happen due to the poor weather, There really was a tornado in Bude Bay on Saturday, it was on the local TV. Friggin' Riggin entertained in the Coachman's bar on Sunday morning and a fantastic and unplanned sing happened in the brasserie conservatory. The afternoon concert was another stunning array of talent and Maddie Southorn, a new name to me, blew me away, not only a lovely voice, but a lovely girl too. Thanks to Roger Bryant for agreeing to MC at 10 minute's notice and Carole and Andrew for stepping in to replace Thorn & Roses, and for singing Childe, for KB unrehearsed!!!!! What stars!
While the concert was on,Friggin' Riggin kept it going in the bar.
The evening ceilidh with The Oggle Band was fantastic, a chance for all to socialise, dance and have a great end ing to the festival, guest spots from George Papavgeris and Willow completed the evening and Geordie Porgy was our stunning MC for the evening.
WOW! what a weekend! I humbly thank all who performed, all who came, all who helped in any way and God that it all went well!
Be assured there will be more of the same next year, somehow! It was worth the hard work, thank you all so much!
Cheers, Lucy

Yes, I recognise these reprobates in Harmony Angel's pics - would have loved to have joined them if I hadn't been at Chippenham, and am glad to hear it went so well. Well done Lucy!

Kitty

(hope to see some of the reprobates at next weekend's song and ale)

Well - what a very excellent weekend! Well done everyone! We made it home just before the caravan was due to turn back into a pumpkin - tired but so pleased to have been part of such a great start to the 'new' Bude festival - this is sure to become one of the fixtures on the folk calendar.

Great to meet so many 'catters (and other folkies too).

See you all again sometime soon.

Just clocked the pitchas on view!

Aah'm not sure if yez are extractin' the urine there, Hawker, Bonnie Lass, but the way a look arrit is....

Most people get up in the mornin', tek off their jimmie-jams and have a wesh/shooer/bord-bath. Then they get dressed into their 'work-claes' and gan te work.

They cums hyem and gets changed into summat comfortable te hev their tea and then hev another wesh/shooer/wharrevva te gan oot in the evenin'.

THEN they come back and get undressed and climb into their jim-jams again (Prob'ly having had another wesh).

What a palaver!! Aah get up! Aah does the fower S's (Sh*t, Shooer, Shampoo & Shave!) Aah puts on me PJ's! End of story!

Next day? The same just different pyjamas - Aah save aboot an hour and a half a day and aalwez carry a tin of armpit repellant for the evenin'.

Just you wait - Next Whitsun it'll be a bloody fashion statement and once again aah'll be the trendsetter (just like when aah wore the open-toed flannel troosers and the bowler hat wi' sleeves)

Lucy----Oh Yes!! Please , Please let 'Daystar' et al dress up in kit !! I was at Broadstairs Festival a few years ago, sitting in a pub ,when about 100 nineteenth- century Redcoats came in and quartered themselves therein----after about ten minutes, we all felt as if we"d been transported back 200 years ! A similar effect could be acheived at "The Tree", I'm sure, especially if the hanging of a Royalist could be arranged ?? Geordie-Peorgie looks suspiciously like The Laughing Cavalier, don"t you think ?? I'm a Roundhead, myself !!
          Shalom !! Roger...

What a delightful weekend! I'm now back at work and with a computer that, hopefully, works, having tried twice last week to post my congratulations to all who performed at and all who helped organise this event!

I had a lovely relaxing time. It was so good to meet all you Catters and listen to such great music.

I loved the pipes. What a fab way to end the Saturday night's concert! It should become 'traditional'!

Thanks and congratulations to all from the Shiny Bum Singers, our only regret was that we had two gigs scheduled that weekend at opposite sides of the country, so couldn't participate fully as we otherwise would.

We loved the invitation and the reception, and the others we heard on Friday evening, and were honoured to be part of it.

Excuse the late thanks, but I have just regained internet access after yet another mad dash the width of the country and back for a family wedding - incidentally for musos featuring brilliant solo saxophone by Dave Brogden at Haldon Belvedere castle's spectacular hilltop setting.

Cheers,
Chris

Fantastic!!!! What a brill weekend, thank you so much Lucy, Kevin and everyone who made it such a special event!

Can't write more now as my right hand is out of action. Had my carpel tunnel op this morning having safely returned from our Cornwall/Devon holiday last night. Dreadful day yesterday as one of my brothers died in the morning unexpectedly. Now feeling pretty useless with only one hand working and too much time on my hands - can't even twiddle my thumbs *smile*
