I've always been afraid to call it up. Anything worth reading on it?

click on the "d" to just see the recent posts.

But you should go on and read the older ones- they are worth the effort (in most cases)

It's a mission to try and read all the posts though!

Stay away from it. It can come to no good. Something evil this way comes.

He should know! His puns are evil.

To contribute you should go back and read from the very beginning. To get the full, robust, subtle and refined yet complex heady feeling for it.

Has anybody estimated how long it would take to read from the beginning?

How long would it take? I don't know- a few months ago I spent most of two weeks reading, like, 14 pages.

That would be approximately a year then.

There are 352 pages. That's approximately 25 lots of 14 pages. 25 times 2 weeks is almost a year.

Well, just to be fair, you don't have to read the stuff that is the same for every post. And you only have to read a few lines of Rapaire's plagiarism until you recognize it. And I can give you permission not to read the advanced physics. See? I bet a few days would do it.

Of course, if you tore through the whole thing in a few days, you would probably contract advanced cerebral MOABitis. But, no gain without pain, I always say.

And after all these years of working and slaving over a hot MOAB, I find I didn't need to read it!

Fortunately or not - depending on how you look at it, I started following the MOAB right from the beginning, so I have pretty much read the whole thing, but I would hate to be starting now. While following it faithfully, I have only been an occasional poster compared to some, because I feel that Mother deserves only the best quality BS, so I only post when I think I am up to providing it.

Having said that, although you may not have seen me posting much, I am always lurking, and I have dibbs on pinwheel number 18081!

From the first post shown: khandu 05 May 03 - 08:31 PM, which may or may not be the actual first post.

352 pages

1,573 days

~17,600 posts

11.19 posts per day

I have measured a typical 10 sec per page to load with my very slow connection. A randomized load of 15 pages shows the load time to be very consistent, indicating that there are not large numbers of long posts.

(A few other pages with actual meaningful content approach 20 – 25 seconds per page to load with my connection.)

I would expect to be able to load all pages and copy/paste to an on-machine document in less than 2 hours, although my connnection is susceptible to occasional interrupts so it could take a bit longer. A full download of the entire thread in a single connect probably would be slightly faster, but could be a burden on traffic capacity for the 'cat.

With ALL of MOABS loaded on-machine, I have observed that a thorough and careful ready of material containing complex and thought-provoking contents from other threads at mudcat generally can be accomplished a the rate of about 200 posts per hour.

From the randomized downloads used to verify consistency of page content within MOABS, and based on sampling of the level of complexity in the samples, I would estimate that a rate of approximately 700 posts per hour is an easily attainable reading speed, at the level of recognizing whether any of the material is of sufficient interest that it might deserve retention or comment.

This gives a total reading time of barely over 25 hours, assuming that there is any content interesting enough to justify more than the first 25 minutes, and not allowing time-outs for potty breaks, beer runs, or making coffee.

Having worked in several large corporations for multiple decades, I am reasonably innured to "communications-lacking-content" and would not expect to suffer "total brain rot" from the drivel in the threads, and might expect to sustain the estimated reading speed for the duration required for complete processing in the estimated time.

Persons not professionally trained in handling idiocy and banality should apply a factor of at least 3x to (for real amateurs) 10x to estimate their own schedule requirements.

As I did actually read all of the first 700 or so posts some time ago when the thread was at that length, rates cited above are supportable. From the prior reading, I could discard the first 140 pages should I wish to just catch up to the conversation in the thread. I have checked in my usual note repository and could quickly review the two "thoughts worth noting" from the prior reading. I have also checked in to read "last pages" occasionally, so I am aware of the general tone and content of later postings.

In short, if someone feels the need, or merely the urge, to read it all as quickly as possible (recommended), the span of a single day could be sufficient, or for a more leisurely approach (which unfortunately prolongs the agony) a total elapsed time of a day or two, spread over a few days, would be more than sufficient.

This is not a project to take up on a day when there just isn't anything else to do (IMO).

This is a project to take up when all other alternative activities are so distasteful that it just isn't humane to be forced to process them. AFTER you've read all of MOABS, they'll seem a lot more manageable, even though your mental processes and ability to do so may be lessened by the reading.

John

My GAWD! What an attitude!

I am reasonably innured [sic] to "communications-lacking-content" and would not expect to suffer "total brain rot" from the drivel in the threads, and might expect to sustain the estimated reading speed for the duration required for complete processing in the estimated time.

What is this man THINKING? Surely he doesn't have MOM in mind when he says this horrible thing? First he tries to strip MOM naked, then he suggests she is distasteful to look at.

I'm going to point the freds in your direction next time they pass through, JIK. Just so you know. They're looking for protein.

Jik, you force me to have Amos's friends (such as they are) call upon you to arrange satisfaction. And Amos only demands Third Blood.

the MOAB mommy voice is bad enough - but if she is actuallly angry...

well, we won't have to worry about global warming anymore...

at least no one has (yet) provoked her into using "the look".

We are in need of protein and have been told to come here and find a man called John. We believe he comes from Kansas.

Where is he, and what sauces would you recommend?

Depends. Do you like your sauces hot and spicy, sort of medium, or mild and smooth?

Sort of hot and spicy we think. Your protein does not have much flavor. Some of your kind are rather tough, so a marinade would be nice.

Thank you.

freds, we at MOAB suggest you ask a simple computer question in a new thread. JohnInKansas will turn up shortly. If you want to marinade we suggest "Piss and Vinegar" to compliment his sharp responses.

Stilly River Sage - we understand vinegar, but what is this piss you speak of? Is it some kind of medication? How do we take it? Please elaborate.
