I just received the following from Alan Hewson, one of his best mates and fellow band member in Tam Lin:

"It is with a very heavy heart that I have to tell you my wonderful friend Paul Gunningham died from a heart attack at 8.30 this morning.

We don't know why this happened. Paul brought a lot of pleasure to everyone who knew him. He was a kind and gentle man, modest, witty and widely talented. I will miss him more than I can say.

There will be a post mortem. I will let you know what the funeral arrangements will be in due course."

I am stunned right now.

I am deeply saddened by this news!

I never met 'Scrump' but have 'threaded' with him and heard George Papavgeris' tribute song on Saturday at Bude.

Anything else I might say would probably sound trite at this time so...

Anyone who can pass on my condolences to his family please do so.

Like other posters I never met Scrump and knew him only from threads on the 'Cat. He always came across as a funny, witty and thoroughly "nice" guy. I for one will sorely miss his musings. I just hope that the celestial brewery can rustle up some interesting vintage ales for him.

My condolences to his family and friends.

From: Lizzie Cornish

Dear Scrump

This is for you.

When I heard the news yesterday, I felt so desperately sad. And as I write this now, the tears are starting. I wracked my mind last night to try and work out what to say. But where do you start? I searched for exactly the right 'quote', as I wanted to use the wise words of someone else...but nothing seemed right. So I tried to use my own words, but they wouldn't come.....

But this morning it's happened and the words are flowing and you know why Scrump?....Because of *you*

I went into *your* words, the ones you sent me in here, just a day or two before your accident, when I got so down in here recently. You were the only person who took the time and the trouble to care. You came over to 'hold my hand' as it were, and to tell me that it would all be OK. That touched me deeply. In your words you spoke about your love for the music and to always stay positive and...well...you just 'cared' xx

So here are some words at long last, hopefully put in a very positive way, because it's how I feel you'd want me to say them, right now, when we're all feeling so terribly down.

As I write this now, despite the tears, I know that you're surrounded by those who've loved you all your life, both in the Spirit world and in this one too. I know that you will never be alone and that from the moment you passed over, a circle of light and love went out around you and it will never leave you.

I know that your kind and loving Spirit will be able to reach out to Frankie and your family, that you were there instantly around them and that eventually, when the shock of all this has grown a little less, when the deep sorrow and so many other emotions, have had time to ease a little, they'll know that you are right there beside them all and you ALWAYS will be, for the rest of their lives, loving them.

As you can see from the messages in here, and in your other thread, you 'touched' many, many people, with your words. Oh you made us smile Scrump and laugh out loud sometimes too! :0)

When I found your photos online I realised how much you enjoyed and cared about the music, it shines out in some of those pictures. I've kept your photo on the desk these past weeks...and you know, it'll stay there now, just so I can say a sunny 'Hello' to you now and again. :0)

I wish your family much love, but most of all, I wish them peace.

We can't change the way that things happen. We can't even begin to understand them sometimes, but in the end, hopefully, acceptance comes in, and with that comes peace.

The good thing about dying is that we ALL get to do it eventually, and then we get to be with those we have truly loved once more. But in the meantime we have to learn about a different kind of love. A love that surrounds us, that is all-encompassing and deeply spiritual. A love that just simply requires the mind to be opened in a different way, and then we understand that love will carry us through, for the rest of our lives and that those we have loved never leave us.

I'm so very glad that you've had so many loving messages Scrump! You deserve each and every one of them and I hope they bring you a huge smile...and bring some comfort to your family too. You've a beautiful Spirit!

So, know that we'll miss you. But know that we'll always think about you too and finally know that you touched many people with your sweet words and nature. I am so glad that you seemed to have enjoyed your life so much and that you carried that enjoyment out to others. I'm all the better for having 'known' you...even though it was only for a very short time in a 'virtual' place. You 'connected' and you made a difference and that counts for a huge amount.

There are those whose Spirits shine bright when they are alive, and that same part of them continues to shine, when they are still 'alive' but simply in another place. You are one of those Spirits.

You take care my friend.

And Paul, I know you'll never stop shining! :0)

With much love to you and your family

Lizzie x

George, your song is superlative. The grief and hope and love come through clearly, so clearly it makes me cry.

If people hang around for a bit after- as some beliefs teach us - Scrump has heard your song, and I think it makes him smile.

Just got back from holiday. Moses broke the sad news to me while I was away.

Although I had only fairly recently actually met Paul in the flesh, I can say that he was every bit as warm and witty a person face to face as you would have expected from his posts here. He was one of those people who once you've met them, you feel you've known them all your life. I will certainly remember him for the rest of mine.

My thoughts are with all who knew him better than I did, especially Alan and Sue, and of course Frankie and Harry.

I first met Paul through his Scrumpy and Western web site. We corresponded a number of times. I never made the connection with "Scrump" until news of his accident hit the 'Cat. He was a pleasant and knowledgeable man who went out of his way to help me as I tried to find out more about the various people on his web page and was nice enough to include mention of me and my radio show on his site.
I read his posts without knowing who he was, but in rereading some of them I find the same qualities I had discovered in the personal correspondance.
To his family and friends I extend my condolences. Even at long distance and through cyberspace Paul was a fine man. I am sorry to see him go; I am blessed to have had some connection to him.

Jim Hickam

The attached was posted on the Midnight Voices forum (Pete Atkin's fan club) by Heather, Paul's sister...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I joined MV last night to express my sincere thanks for your wonderful sentiments on my brother, Paul Gunningham.

I was surfing for information on my brother as a way to help me grieve through the process. I last saw Paul and Frankie in October in London and we both all met in a pub with our adult sons. He was a modest, talented individual with a brilliant mind who loved his family, music, travel, meeting people, and computing development - but his passion was always music.

Even as a teenager he played harmonica, keyboards, and guitar. He was also a brilliant cartoonist. It was a terrible shock to hear of the dreadful car accident that took him away from his family - he struggled to live for 10 weeks, visited daily by Frankie. I last saw him in April, just three weeks after the accident.

The person who caused the accident when P&F were on their way to fly out for a vacation, has since gone underground and the police haven't been able to arrest him. The man had no legal papers on him and he drove right into Paul.

I was touched by the song written to Paul by George P. Thank you all for your kind messages, I have printed copies to give to his parents who have no Internet access.

Heather Gunningham

El Greko and I attended Paul's funeral yesterday, along with many of Paul's musical friends. Of course it was a very sad occasion, but the minister who conducted the service, Frankie, and Alan, who paid a very fitting tribute, made sure it was a celebration of Paul's life and legacy rather than just a mourning of his passing. The words that were read by the minister on Frankie's behalf were both moving and uplifting, and brought a tear the the corner of this old folkie's eye. We left the chapel to the strains of Harvey Andrews' "Folk Club in the Sky"!

Afterwards we retired to the Orange Tree, which is the venue for the Baldock Folk Club, to raise a glass of Paul's favourite to his memory, and sing some songs in his honour. Despite her obvoius grief, Frankie was dignified and gracious throughout, and appeared to very much appriciate the musical contribution, knowing as she does, what an important part of Paul's life it was.

Frankie told me that she had read, when her mood allowed, all the messages of love and good wishes on this and other forums, following the accident, and the subsequent condolences, and expressed her gratitude to all concerned.
