Subject: 'Beverley Folk Festival' Fringe
From: ossonflags
Date: 04 Jun 07 - 05:01 AM

15th to 17th June inclusive.

Thought I would start this of to provide info for those intrested in the doins, news and events of the Bev.Fest Fringe.

Myself and Sir Rog will be co-hosting singarounds at the "Monks Walk" both Saturday and Sunday of the festival.

Saturday from 13.30 hrs to whenever

Sunday from 13.30. hrs to whenever

I have been informed by Lorraine (landperson of the "Monks") that as last year a marquee will be set up in the bear garden. We will have the option if weather and minster bells permit of using the inside of the pub.

So if you sing, twang, strum, pick, blow, fiddle, whistle, drum, dance, monologue or just come and join in and or listen you will sure of a warm welcome at the "Monks"

And on Saturday at 2p.m.there's the 'Ladies' session in Hodgsons - you don't have to be a lady but if you're not you need to sing/recite/play about one!!

Ive just spoken to Mervyn and he thinks it's the Sunday afternoon as well - similar format to last year's. He'll be back here to confirm.

Maggie and I will be hosting our usual meet 'n' greet session in Hodgson's on the Friday evening. Hodgson's is the pub adjacent to the campsite. We welcome all sorts of folky stuff, but I imagine that people who want a sing will go there and people who want a tune will go to the Tiger. That's what usually happens.

I've just had a call from the festival (director?) telling me that it is no longer possible to buy camping only tickets for the festival.

We phoned last Thursday just to check we could buy camping only tickets - we could - but between the phone call and them receiving the cheque they changed their minds. It seems it isn't viable for the festival to allow camping only. A shame.

In order to get round this you need to buy an event ticket, then you can buy camping tickets for £20 per person.

I'm dissappointed (and more than a little miffed - having been told it was OK), but the festival has to remain financially viable if it is to continue.

John

Thanks Willa,

We have now booked a concert and camping.

Still miffed at having the festival organisers going back on their word though. We'll probably look elsewhere next year - on principle.

Yes john J so am I, they have certainly kept this under wraps. If you are reading this Chris or Martin I would like an answer, as I have just this week, on the 4th/6/07 released another area of the field that will take 30 /40 vans an nothing was said. ????? Oombanjo

Irritating isn't it? I shall be having a friendly word with the organisers when I get there. They're (legally) on a VERY sticky wicket with their decision: Thursday when we phoned them they said I could buy camping only tickets, so I ordered them. On Monday they phoned me back and say they've just changed their minds, I can't 'camp only'.

I would have absolutely no objection if they said at the outset that that was going to be the case, but to do it like that is a bit off. Not everyone can afford full festival tickets.

Cheers,

John

No doubt Oombanjo will confirm or otherwise but I thought that East Riding Council had obliged the organisers to keep on the camping only option following the People's voice festival initiative.

The other annoying point is that, having made John buy an event ticket in order to be able to camp, - the organisers are under no obligation to ensure that he is able to get a seat at the said event.

Chris is only answerable to herself it is not the peoples voice it is the Chris voice!! which is a great loss for the festival as a whole and a shame for the people. She doesn't like the fringe which is also a shame because it is an integral part of the event.

There is some B and B and self catering accommodation in Beverley. There's a campsite at Lakeminster park which is about 20 minutes walk to the forresters and about half hour to Beverley Minster. They also have a couple of self catering chalets but they are a bit pricey because the price includes fishing. It's very pretty there by the fishing lakes but there is that walk into town - unless you took a taxi or drove and parked where the army museum used to be.

The problem is that having spoken to the festival proper. I was given the go ahead to pass the information on as John j. can verify and inform those that want to camp that tickets would be available AFTER the 1st of June but only if there were any spaces not sold and available. AS I said in my earlier thread, I only released another part of the field, this would hold 30/40 vans, upwards of that if it was tents, so spaces were and are available,???? Also in the festival literature it say that camping will be available " the restrictions were those that I muted earlier". I am far from happy with the shoddy way that I have been used and I will no doubt be having a few words with the organisers and so should all others that feel the same way.
Ps. I posted an earlier thread on the Fringe. I wrote, "It is to be my last year of running the fringe. Roy Wild has offered to step into the lions den please give him all the support and encouragement that you have given me over the years". Chee3rs Oombanjo

Additional fringe events - Sunday am there should be an old time gospel session on the Syntan on Beverley beck.

Foresters songwriter's session is Sun afternoon from around 2pm (a popular event last year so get there early).

The Sun welcomes singers and musicians throughout the weekend though no formal sessions are scheduled.

To limber up for the serious sessions of the day join me in the marquee on the campsite from 11.30am - 1.30pm Sat & Sun for a lunchtime session.

The rain has eased considerably and could think of stopping soon . (1240hrs GMT)

I've been down to the campsite which has some BIG puddles and oombanjo is hopeful the weather will ease.

General traffic has been hid badly by localised flooding. From the Humber Bridge A164) the Willerby roundabout was under water and traffic at a crawl. Entering from North Cave, Walkington had flooding too.
I expect it's much the same from York (A1079)but believe it to be slightly clearer to the North.
There is a LOT of activity in Beverley this weekend.
A tribute band, 'The Kings of Queen' are due to perform up on the Westwood, (north west of town) on Saturday evening AND
the Final 'Walkington Hayride', 'Heavy Horses' drawing carts/carriages in Victorian style meander to Beverley and back on Sunday afternoon.
It's now 1255hrs and the rain has stopped (at my house), 2 miles north of the campsite. Fingers and toes crossed.
Hopefully all will enjoy what they can. I'm in my shorts and make no apology for my attire. Legs dry off so much quicker than soggy trousers! Wellies at the ready.I'm heading for the campsite about 1400hrs.
Enjoy.

Lunch time BBC 'Look North' said the festival is still ON, tho' other events in Hull have been cancelled!
(Bridlington had one months rainfall in 12 hours!!)

It's a lot brighter now and barely raining.

I'll see you there!

Heard rumours and the questionaire may have hinted at it, can't remember the question but did remark on it.I don't have a problem where the festival may or may not be held but if it is in a field somewhere the festival food tent needs to step up about 98% it was useless this year. Festival Tickets prices are very high compared to other festivals having said that I would not organise a folk festival and vote with me wallet and feet anyway Enjoyed the artists who where on and even with the rain an enjoyable festival this year

One of us saw Bellowhead and they were great. It must be very expensive to book a main act like that. Imagine splitting the gig money eleven ways!
Suppose a lot of us would be happy with a cheaper festival because we like dance teams and sessions and perhaps just to drop into something else at some point but aren't so bothered about whether it's a big time act. Beverley festival is limited in size by the size of the campsite and if the ambition is to move away from the 'character' provincial market town bit of fun and become something like Towersey or Glastonbury then the organisers have to to go somewhere else.
We just heard 'a site ten miles away' so that could be Driffield show ground. It's a pity for Beverley town and the folkies of Beverley will miss it. For the festival itself I suppose it depends on what you want from a festival and others might prefer a bigger site and more of a rock festival feel. If anyone has opinions on it now is the time to get a feedback form and fill it in.

Despite the best endeavours of the weather god, this was a good do and the camping field held out.

I was a "traffic" marshall in a high vis vest.   Jeremy Clarkson said that the country was being run by blokes in high vis vests. I agree with him.    All I needed was the power of arrest and the weekend would be complete.   By power of arrest I mean of those without tickets, banjo players, singers (like me) out of tune etc.

Well I reckon the big bands can go off to Humbleton and leave us in Beverley with a fringe festival that has a reasonable camping ticket price and some good sessions. Never have been to any of the big gigs, which makes it an expensive weekend camping! Couldn't make it this year - hope you all didn't get drowned! Look forward to a Fringetastic event next year then!

Home, dry, tired, nearly hoarse and delighted with the way the weekend produced more of those wonderful 'unrehearsed choir' moments in Hodgsons.
Congratulations to Willa for 'The Wilberforce Collection' events that resulted from her very great effort. It was a delight to hear James Berriman singing live.... (I heard him 3 times) what an outstanding voice. Sorry not to get to the Monks Mick/Roger. I was unable to get a leave pass!
Great job well done by Maggie and Les, Derek, John and Carol keeping Hodgsons front room in order....all weekend. An 'I'll only stay about 10 minutes' remark was forgotten as someone left nearly five hours later wondering 'where the time went'.
Wildboy let some gatecrashers in to 'Area2 tent where the singing continued. Zoe and Dave were brill as were Derek, oombanjo, Roy and Carol and I didn't want the evening to end.
The new rope string band had me in stitches, see them if you can.
Could have had a better layout in the tented village, a fab coffee stall was so far out I nearly missed it.
Great job on the campsite by oombanjo. He never gets enough credit for what he oversees.
Epic over now. If I've forgotten anyone I'm sorry but I'm somewhat tired. I know! Special thanks to Linda Kelly for services to 'Pistachio' time management! It's a hell of a task. xxx

I am the voice inside Pistachio's head which says 'I want to be here but need to be there!'-Good festival better fringe- Glad I saw Seth Lakeman, cos he is very good but not my scene, and if I saw anyone else I can't remember. Friday fringe was superb, nice to see John J again-well done Mick Les & Maggie Carol for running wonderful singarounds and to oombanjo for managing the flood better than Noah. Good to see the pubs full in a part of Beverley that needs the trade. Improvements needed to the food and the craft stalls but given conditions then I suspect that had a bearing on those things. I am loking forward to Cleckheaton immensely.

also enjoyed the festival but feel that someone has another agenda regarding moving to a greenfield site.
mild moan ; i think that a warning to all under 14s to wear earplugs means that this is not really a folk act and would be better appreciated by head bangers from Bradford and the money better spent on a folk act.
if you need a guard on the emergency exit of a concert please note that the crash doors need the bolts unfastened to allow the doors to open in an emergency.
fiddlers who get a bit precious when a box player diverts away from that irish tune they play all night.
mild praise
the fringe is the important part of Beverley festival and should be preserved.
if the larger option moves away, keep the faith and downsize to a festival within the town and base at the memorial hall it worked at Holmfirth.
absolute praise to Oombanjo for site organization

Having had to miss this years festival,I was a bit shocked to start reading the messages and find out that I had maybe missed the last Beverley-based festival.

I agree with previous writers who say that if the big festival moves away to a site-based festival, with only limited opportunities for impromptu sessions, then I would certainly support a weekend of fringe events based in various pubs with maybe one concert venue such as the memorial hall.

It would be a real shame to move away from Beverley.

Here's to next year

Wish we could have stayed longer in the Foresters Arms on Sunday as there was some good 'stuff' being played by all and a nice, relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. There was a suggestion of a similar session starting up in the Sun on Tuesday evenings but I didn't get further details. Does anyone know if it starts tonight? Ta.

I thought the fringe festival produced some superb stuff. It was great to see The Sun totally mobbed. It was busier than I've seen it since 2003! There was a gathering of vry talented writers, singers and musicians at The Forresters on Sunday. The locals of a great histoic minstrels town showed once again how the passion and skill still runs in the blood. It was enhanced too by some amazing artists from further afield. Well done to all inolved in a cracking musical weekend (the beer wasn't bad either!)

Respect to all, Karl.

The 'Sun Songs' evening does indeed start tonight and it would be great if we could get lots of support for the first evening. It will be running every Tuesday from 8.30pm at the Sun Inn, Beverley.

Hey I just want to say a big thanks to everyone who made the festival work, you know who you are. It was pretty scary on Friday morning watching a lake appear at the campsite entrance, but it all just seemed to work out fine in the end.

I had a brilliant weekend. The mix of bands like New Model Army and Bellowhead with the more traditional artists was inspired; this, combined with the fringe activities, made it one of the best festival's I've been to anywhere. I'm horrified to hear that it will be moving outside Beverley. The whole atmosphere will change and losing the opportuniy to wander into town will make the whole event much less attractive - in fact, I may not even bother coming again. Come on, Chris, that really is a move too far.

Just emailed Chris Wade to ask if the festival's moving and got this reply:

"Not sure about it moving. Beverley certainly has a lot of advantages and it seemed to go so well this year that we agree it would be a shame to move it."

Croxdale was a good weekend but could do with a bit more support perhaps. The weather coming back was hellish on the A1 and M62. Roll on the 4 Fools and then Cleckheaton then I suppose we should come home for a few days!
