Subject: RE: Gates of Southwell Fest Any one going From: Big Al Whittle Date: 06 Jun 07 - 05:36 AM Hm not brilliant timing...... Festival of the Peak has round about every floorsinger in the midlands doing a turn (me included) at Carsington Water. Ken Nicol making one of his rare concert appearances at the Kiln Arts centre in Swadlicote on the saturday - breathed there a guitarist so dull he wants to miss that! |

Subject: RE: Gates of Southwell Fest Any one going From: Black Diamond Date: 06 Jun 07 - 05:38 AM my side will be dancing there as we have for some years past at The Gate to Southwell - its always a great day out, starting with the Mayors address in Nottingham Town Centre, followed by processions there and through various villages(with the obligatory pub stops oops did I say that?? LOL)all day on towards Southwell Minster, where the ceremony of handing over the Southwell Pence takes place culminating in the morris service in the Minster. not to be missed Lin |

Subject: RE: Gates of Southwell Fest Any one going From: Dave Sutherland Date: 06 Jun 07 - 07:16 AM At what venue are the floorsingers appearing at Festival of the Peak Al? All the publicity that I have received, and it has been a lot, refers only to concerts, kid's events and workshops. I'm interested since I'll be there. |

Subject: RE: Gates of Southwell Fest Any one going From: Big Al Whittle Date: 06 Jun 07 - 12:10 PM A group of performers called Hoi Polloi asked me to contribute to their section. You could ask Mary DeVille about it who runs it. I haven't got her phone number to hand, but its on my website as I set one of her songs to music. Mary usually knows the crack. Is there any chance of floorspots at Southwell, a club tent mayhap? |

Subject: RE: Gates of Southwell Fest Any one going From: MBSLynne Date: 06 Jun 07 - 01:08 PM Just wanted to point out that it's The Gate to Southwell not the Gates of Southwell. This is gate as in way. Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: Gates of Southwell Fest Any one going From: MoorleyMan Date: 06 Jun 07 - 05:36 PM Yes, another weekend with two events near each other that sound very attractive on paper. As far as guests go, anyway, one's spoilt for choice, both having brilliant lineups. But for ye humble floorsinger, well it's all a bit different it seems ... None of the Carsington publicity mentions floorsingers or singing sessions as such. But this year's flyer does list two "Courtyard Session" slots - these are described as "Hoi Polloi and Friends" on the Sat 1300-1600 and "singers and musicians welcome" on the Sun 1230 onwards. From what I remember of a previous year however, this was mainly a musicians' playalong sess, so I don't know whether it's different this year. (And at risk of seeming ignorant, who's Mary De Ville?) Southwell is even more strange. The website coyly lists "singarounds, sessions", but telephone enquiries made to the number given on the website, by other folks I know, could only elicit the mention of one singaround-type event all weekend, that being at Sat teatime for just a couple of hours, somewhere in a pub, possibly the Bramley (? - dunno, Directory Enquiries hadn't got it listed), run by festival guests (ie in between their concerts), and a musicians' session (Irish) in "a.n.other pub". That's all folks, as I understand it. (Again I may seem ignorant, but who's Mike Green?) The bits Villan refers to are down as Open Mic in Marquee 2 on the website programme I believe. This seems to be a recurring problem, finding out about anything other than the main, ticketed concerts/events at festivals in a town you don't know. It's simply not worth planning to make a long trip up/down/across to an unknown festival, just on spec and/or to end up wandering round all day/weekend trying to find opportunities to sing. Invariably one ends up at the wrong festival/wrong place/wrong venue/wrong time and is greeted with "oh how fantastic XXxx was" the next day on Mudcat - somewhere completely different and/or miles away but you could and would have gone there instead if only you'd known .. (ok I know a lot of good stuff happens adhoc at most festivals too.) |

Subject: RE: Gates of Southwell Fest Any one going From: Rasener Date: 06 Jun 07 - 05:53 PM Mike Green is one of the main organisers. For Southwell its their first time and I think they should be congratulated for doing it. I know having been in communication with the organisers that they are putting one huge amount of effort in to try and make it successful, and I beleive it will be successful. I don't think its fair to knock them Moorley Man (if indeed you are). I say good on you guys for giving it a go. I for one am looking forward to it very much |

Subject: RE: Gates of Southwell Fest Any one going From: Big Al Whittle Date: 06 Jun 07 - 06:03 PM As I say there is a fair bit about mary on my website http://bigalwhittle.co.uk/id11.html |

Subject: RE: Gates of Southwell Fest Any one going From: MoorleyMan Date: 06 Jun 07 - 07:14 PM Hey there Villan - you make de wrong assumptions perhaps - no way am I knocking the Southwell guys for their efforts, and wouldn't dream of doing. Like you I suspect, I was only asking the questions, and only the one name (not MG's) was there on the publicity. Certainly the quality of the progam info (as regards concerts etc) on the Southwell website is really good and puts some festival organisers to shame. I really do think Southwell's new venture deserves to succeed, even though as others have pointed out it clashes with Festival Of The Peak - and there's nowt wrong with healthy competition I say! Pace..... Thanks for the blue clicky to your website Al, I'll go there to find out more. Haven't yet decided where I'll be going this weekend - but I do fancy some singing I'll admit. Can't get far on just half a tank o' petrol though! |

Subject: RE: Gates of Southwell Fest Any one going From: Rasener Date: 11 Jun 07 - 08:36 AM What a really nice weekend it was. The weather was great and so was the music. Had anybody been there giving awards for the best toilet facitlies at any festival, they would have won it. The toilets were spotless and kept clean by a man, who when anybody had used the toilet, he would clean it immediately. There was a very good turnout for the first time, and the stewards worked really hard to make sure everybody enjoyed it. Excellent controllers/Senior Stewards job done by fellow mudcatter RWJ who worked tirelessly and unsefishly to ensure that things worked smoothly during the festival for everybody. Great bunch of organisers who also worked tirelessly for everybody elses enjoyment. Top notch performances from Kathryn Tickell Band, The Doonan Family Band, New Rope String Band, Johnny Dickenson, Vin Garbutt, John Kirkpatrick, Nancy Kerr & James Fagan, Malinky, The Demon Barber Road Show and Pete Coe. Also enjoyed very much Winter Wilson and Something Nasty in the Woodshed. Thats all I got to see, but enjoyed the stewarding side and met a lot of very nice folkies including fellow mudcatters FolkieDave and Black Diamond. So roll on next year. Les |

Subject: RE: Gates of Southwell Fest Any one going From: Rasener Date: 11 Jun 07 - 08:38 AM Comments posted on another thread by Black Diamond and copied over onto to this thread. >> Hi Les I came and bumped into you didnt I?? This was the very first Southwell FF, and I have to say that I found everything very well organised and a joy to share, albeit only for the couple of hours that I had spare time to visit on Saturday. There was excellent signposting to the event, friendly and helpful stewards on the car park gate and helping with parking. The two entertainment marquees, all the refreshments and the craft stalls were all within easy distance of each other on one big field. Unfortunately I had to leave well before the Gate to Southwell Morris sides arrived back on site, but I came away with a real feel good factor, and if anyone knows any of the organisers, could you give them a "well done" from me!! especially for organising the excellent weather! Lin << |

Subject: RE: Gates of Southwell Fest Any one going From: Folkiedave Date: 11 Jun 07 - 11:13 AM I enjoyed it too and meeting fellow mudcatter The Villan (who was working all weekend as a steward and looked to be doing a damned god job. Great line-up and great performances from the New Rope String Band, Waterson:Carthy; Malinky, a well crafted set of quality material with a lovely lady singer (Fiona Hunter) and Kathryn Tickell who was just fantastic!! Managed to sell a few books too!! If you missed me Handley Village Festival...... Dave |

Subject: RE: Gates of Southwell Fest Any one going From: GUEST,justiceoffthebench Date: 11 Jun 07 - 12:00 PM Southwell was a huge success, despite a certain Folkwaves broadcaster's blatant attempts to plug his own festival at Carsington and not mention Southwell unless forced to. The lineup was absolutely fantastic and the organisation terrific, such a lovely atmosphere also. Plenty of open mic oportunities for those who wanted to perform. Good luck for next year. |

Subject: RE: Gates of Southwell Fest Any one going From: Black Diamond Date: 11 Jun 07 - 03:43 PM During my short time there, I saw and heard outside the Hobgoblin tent a chap playing a melodeon, and I just happened to ahve mine with me, so after listening for a while, I was invited to play with him and Mr Hobgoblin?? on guitar. the melodeon player introduced himself as John. is that anyone on Mudcat by any chance??? if you are, i enjoyed playing with you and hope to meet up again sometime Lin |

Subject: RE: Gates of Southwell Fest Any one going From: Folkiedave Date: 12 Jun 07 - 10:14 AM I was busy giving free North American Native flutes with each book. Subject: RE: Gates of Southwell Fest Any one going From: GUEST,MG Date: 12 Jun 07 - 01:47 PM Thanks to all you folkies brave enough to give the 1st Gate To Southwell Folk Festival a try, we had a great weekend, the entertainment was first class and a terrific atmosphere abounded all weekend. That was part of it's public face, but let me tell you about something less obvious. On the friday over 250 kids from 3 local schools came in to work on a special heritage education project. They had been working since tuesday with Pete & Sue Coe and Damian Barber (great job guys) learning Morris, Sword and Clog and folk dance folklore. Demon Barber roadshow gave an eclectic special concert in the afternoon featuring the kids themselves - the audience were touched - we knew then that all the hard work of organising had been worthwhile. It was a great way to start the whole thing off and so important bringing young people in to folk music and dance. Throughout the wekkend, many other artists gave their time in workshops with the kids incl: James Fagan, Nancy Kerr & members of Malinky. We hope to continue this theme. It was a truly massive (and at times frightening undertaking) for such a relatively small band of organisers but overall a great success. We know we didnt get everthing spot on but we'll listen to all to make it better - fancy helping? Oh!, we agree it was sad that we clashed with Fetival In The Peak but we wanted to align ourselves with the already established "Gate To Southwell" dance procession - part of Southwell's rich heritage - (take a look at Dolphin Morris website) to make the whole thing much richer (and better value) with something for everyone. Many many Thanks to all those who supported us. MG |

Subject: RE: Gates of Southwell Fest Any one going From: Folkiedave Date: 12 Jun 07 - 02:13 PM I was lucky enough to catch the end of the DB Road Show with the kids and I agree that was absolutely great. Remember we are talking primary school pupils. The rapper first of all by the young people and then by the Barbers was great and Bryony is getting a reputation for conducting choirs. Good on yer Bryony. |

Subject: RE: Gates of Southwell Fest Any one going From: Rasener Date: 12 Jun 07 - 02:34 PM The DB roadshow were brilliant and are a shining example of how to get youngsters interested in the "folk world" 10 out of 10 |

Subject: RE: Gates of Southwell Fest Any one going From: GUEST,Old Fogey Date: 12 Jun 07 - 03:31 PM Really enjoyed the family atmosphere of the Festival. Best toilets at any festival I have been to. Great seeing the kids with the plate spinning guy which proved great entertainment for the adults also. Great performances from Carthy etc, Dickinson, Tickell, Garbutt and Pearson. As a player, I enjoyed the guitar seminar and had heard about the kid, and was surprised by him, especially being a youngster. Stewards were great, weather was great, real ale was great............Festival.......great. |
