Subject: BS: Things Learned at Mudcat
From: Mickey191
Date: 13 Jul 07 - 05:46 PM

An interesting tidbit was posted today by Raedwulf:
In Victorian times, dog turds were a valuable commodity. Essential in the tanning industry & there were those amongst the poor who specialised in collecting them.

Just another educational, whimsical, odd piece of information that seems to be part of the charm of Mudcat. Years ago I was advised how to smuggle a toilet from Canada & how to install it. It is a warm and tender memory which keeps me returning to Mudcat.

Do you have an odd, twisted or screwy memories to contribute?

Mickey191-F.

To type what the hell you like... Yes, flame the bastard, it's deserved!! Done? Good. Now think twice about hitting "Submit Message".

I don't think I learnt that entirely at Mudcat. And I don't always remember the lesson. But Mudcat *will* teach you it, if you hang around long enough, & it ain't a bad lesson!

With apologies to Mickey, who didn't intend this sort of response at all when he joyously cribbed my utterly useless piece of information!

I've learned that an awful lot more people are interested in my tits than just me.

I've learned that I seem to have missed out on some of the better parts of motherhood, but I've also learned that I've missed out on an awful lot more of the worst parts!

And I've learned that there are like-minded nutters all over the world who like me AFTER they've met me!

And that I have a lot to learn, e'g' about LTS's - er - where's me manners?

Life would be absolutely impossible if we trusted nobody.

Absolutely impossible.

We are taught some vital things - language,(for some of us) philosophy, cooking etc.

There are some we are not taught - the human being, self-knowledge, awareness.

If I was constantly being stomped on, from what I've learned, I'd be beginning to ask what I, (yes I) was doing, what part I was playing in the situation. That's not a usual attitude because we are very resistant to looking at ourselves. No surprise it was said by Socrates and was one of the mottos over the Oracle at Delphi. 'Cos if we blame, we thereby let ourselves off the hook. (This is part of a long story/process which may not work via explanation.)

I've also discovered that we are simultaneously all the same and all different.

There are many people here who carry themselves with dignity and pride in what they say...and some who play a role...probably unlike that of their real life...perhaps for their own sense of fun. There are some who are very knowledgable..some tolerant...some not so...some ignorant.....some very sensitive...and some not so......etc etc pretty much like everyday life really.....As regards knowledge of Folk music...great place to visit.
Best wishes, Miker.

Subject: LYR ADD: Friends by Mike Campbell (Alaska Mike)
From: Alaska Mike
Date: 15 Jul 07 - 11:38 AM

Last fall my intestines burst and I nearly died. During the 5 weeks of coma, drug induced psychosis, and the additional 3 months of physical therapy; my good friends on Mudcat kept me in their thoughts and prayers. They provided my poor wife with support and encouragement that helped her cope with her fear and anxiety. I have learned that Mudcatters from all over the world care about one another and I am very proud to be a part of this community. I wrote the following lyrics while recovering.

Friends
by Mike Campbell 2006

When problems are many and troubles are deep,
And life seems like darkness and blight.
Its the friends that we've made that will help see us through,
Good friends never waver in shining their light.
So lift up your glasses and give a good cheer,
Our friends form the rock where we stand.
And friendship is worth a good song and a beer,
Its our friends that make living so grand.

I'm a lucky old fellow, I've friends by the score,
And they're all the most wonderful kind.
They stand by me whenever the wolf's at my door,
And they don't seem to care if I'm out of my mind.
So lift up your glasses and give a good cheer,
Our friends form the rock where we stand.
And friendship is worth a good song and a beer,
Its our friends that make living so grand.

Now friends of fair weather are easy to find,
But they're there only when times are high.
Its the friends that stand by you in hurricane winds,
They're the ones you should measure friends by.
So lift up your glasses and give a good cheer,
Our friends form the rock where we stand.
And friendship is worth a good song and a beer,
Its our friends that make living so grand.

I love you all,
Mike

I've learned that there is a great deal of compassion in the world, even for complete strangers.

I've also learned that there are certain people with such fixed views that it really isn't worth the trouble of arguing with them and that, having stated my position, unless something is said to make me think again, I am best off walking away from the discussion, even if that makes them think that they have won the argument.

I've learned that I don't have to have met someone in the physical world to be friends and that, even online, I can guage whether or not I will get on with someone else, from what they say and what is said about them.

I've learnt that Mudcat is full of friends I don't yet know.

If you want something answered, just ask.
Mudcatters know so much.

They care and share.
They hug and help.
There's always someone 'listening'.
Observations are interesting, arguments are a part of life and information abounds.

Thank you.

Things I've learned:
Years ago Amos gave me advice which allowed me to collect a debt owed to me by someone who had taken advantage of me. It saved me from the legal aspects of collecting on the debt.

Escammillo kindly translated into Spanish the words I needed to give a new neighbor "Welcome Baby" gifts.

I've gotten CDs from singers I've admired on the Cat. Never met them-but their generosity knows no strangers.

From Wolfgang I rec'd. the gift of understanding how statistics can be twisted to fool the unwise.

And from the many - expert in the art of humor - I give my thanks. I thank those who write the touching songs and beautiful poems, especially Kevin McGrath.

Tis a Grand Place!       Mickey191-F.

I've learned after searching 37 years who actually composed "Pity the Downtrodden Landlord" and a whole lot more about the origins of other songs.

I've met some really fine people in real life, so to speak, that I first encountered on Mudcat and probably would never have met otherwise.

I've learned that some of the people that I disagree with in the BS section are ones that share my interest in nautical songs. The inverse is probably true but I'm less aware of that!

I've learned to be patient when no one responds immediately to my latest post.

I've learned how to kill a thread by just expressing interest in it. So much for this one!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Don't think i made it very clear that Mudcat has been invaluable in my process, and probably given me more than I've given (tho' God know I've TRIED).

Apart from everything else, it or rather you people , have been important for me.

The everything else includes the info and the greeatheartedness, and friendliness (no, no, too late to deny it) and the humour in bucket-loads.

                        Thank you all.

I just finished On Chesil Beach, available at fine bookstores everywhere. Definitely won't make a good action flick, but as a case study on the true value of being in the right, it is very useful and thought-provoking.

I've looked at threads from both sides now,
Some are gross and but still somehow
It's thread's illusions that I recall;
I really don't know much at all!

The hardest bit will be finding a knockout tune.

Does it work with any of themes from the 1812?

I've learned a lot more about uses for urine than just extracting it or flushing it... sometimes ignorance CAN be bliss!

I've learned to avoid drinking coffee while accessing threads like this.

But, oh dear, what's this rusty nail doing in my hand?

Cheerily,

You are being crucified for our sins.
