Leaking is a time honored tradition in DC.
Through mutual acquaintence I have some inside info on the handling and suppression of the Surgeon General by the Bush administration.
It includes administration memos and the travel documents that show how the administration would send him out of town to lecture at some high school every time they wanted him to keep his mouth shut.

Most people would agree that public health is a science issue beond a political party affiliation and not an evangelical faith based initiative. That is all except the Bush Rove machine and certain religious zealots.

Keeping people safe from their health care system?

Sure...if their health care system suggests anything this asinine administration considers awkward for their agenda!

The Surgeon General is lucky they don't set him in a closet with duct-tape over his mouth.

(I personally know someone in the upper reaches of EPA who has assured me that the Republicans have spent much of their time since Reagan got in, dismantling good programs and making sure others do not do much 'environmental' work that would interfere with 'business'...etc.)

But Donuel - It's all perfectly legal, because Herr Bush says so:

Passed by Congress and signed by Bush:

When requested, scientific information "prepared by government researchers and scientists shall be transmitted [to Congress] uncensored and without delay."

But Bush's signing statement:

The president can tell researchers to withhold any information from Congress if he decides its disclosure could impair foreign relations, national security, or the workings of the executive branch.

And a few other choice ones:

Passed by Congress and signed by Bush:

The Department of Energy, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and its contractors may not fire or otherwise punish an employee whistle-blower who tells Congress about possible wrongdoing.

But Bush's signing statement:

The president or his appointees will determine whether employees of the Department of Energy and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission can give information to Congress.

Passed by Congress and signed by Bush:

Justice Department officials must give reports to Congress by certain dates on how the FBI is using the USA Patriot Act to search homes and secretly seize papers.

But Bush's signing statement:

The president can order Justice Department officials to withhold any information from Congress if he decides it could impair national security or executive branch operations.

Passed by Congress and signed by Bush:

Dec. 30, 2005: US interrogators cannot torture prisoners or otherwise subject them to cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment.

But Bush's signing statement:

The president, as commander in chief, can waive the torture ban if he decides that harsh interrogation techniques will assist in preventing terrorist attacks.

Passed by Congress and signed by Bush:

Defense Department personnel are prohibited from interfering with the ability of military lawyers to give independent legal advice to their commanders.

But Bush's signing statement:

All military attorneys are bound to follow legal conclusions reached by the administration's lawyers in the Justice Department and the Pentagon when giving advice to their commanders.

Passed by Congress and signed by Bush:

The military cannot add to its files any illegally gathered intelligence, including information obtained about Americans in violation of the Fourth Amendment's protection against unreasonable searches.

But Bush's signing statement:

Only the president, as commander in chief, can tell the military whether or not it can use any specific piece of intelligence.

Inside information? Nah, this is public knowledge, and old news to boot... tell us something we don't know!

Donuel -

Just read some real German history from the 1930s (which was fairly new when I was a kid, and not all the "easy answers" had taken over).

Been noticing the coincidences.

Something you don't know, hmmm. As Rumsfeld used to say "we don't know what we don't know",

Perhaps you have heard the propoganda that we must wait for September before we can make any judgement on ceasing hostilities in Iraq. Why September? There are a number of reasons. One is a propogandized expectation of a terrorist attack in the US this September that would sever to escalate war activities without debate. Another reason is that any date in the future will lead to another date in the future...
But the main reason is that the US still does not have a finalized deal to "sell" Iraq's oil to multinational oil companies.

We wanted to have a legitimately elected goverment in Iraq to vote for the sale of Iraq's oil to western oil companies but it still has not happened and now the remains of the Iraq Parlment have gone on VACATION. Boy did that toast Dick Cheney's cookies. He went over there in person to tell them to not go on vacation and vote the oil to multinational companies immediately, but the Iraqis did not obey. Dick was really pissed off on his trip back and nearly stroked out.

If we could rely on a free unimpeded flow of Iraq oil we could be out of there in 90 days but it will never be possible to secure all the thousands of miles of remote unguarded pipelines from sabotage.

The final reason is that September is a totally fictious date of reappraisal. Any cessation of hostilities in a US policy of perpetual war is a knife in the heart of every defense contractor, weapons manufacturer and oil company in the free world.

Liberty, democracy and dying in vain never had anything to do with the invasion of Iraq.

but undoubtedly you already knew that too.

so how about...

I bet the American people would be more interested in the list of GWB's performance enhancement pharmaceuticals. :=)

Inside poop is fascinating but
inside poop can be deadly.

If you had the inside poop on a billion dollars and the conditions put on that money in a Swiss Back Account for Dick Cheney by Mobil Exon you could disappear in a matter of weeks.

Of the 3 people who have written unauthorized biographies of GWB, two of them have officially commited suicide.
