With a little luck, my wife and I will make it to the Ann Arbor Art Fair, for the first time in some years. We'll check out John Hardly's pottery, maybe hang around and try to drive off paying customers; I even have John's booth location mapped out. Any other 'catters selling stuff, or performing?

I usually go every other year, and this is an off-year for me. When I do go, I plan to go on Thursday or Friday. Saturdays are just too crowded, and they're shut down by Sunday.

Ann Arbor, as I recall, is one of the major cultural centers of Michigan, if not the center. The Ark is still located there, in its most recent incarnation. One of my long time friends resides, to the envy of us all, on Easy Street.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble, Michigan resident from 1968 to 1982

Shucks, Charley; you moved out of the state the year before I moved in. The Ark is still definitely folkie Mecca for this whole part of the country.

Frogprince et al-

I still hunger for the Hellas restaurant in Detroit's Greek Town. There used to be a block of restaurants and coffee shops to explore there in the 1970's. They've probably been replaced with a Red Lobster/Olive Garden miniplaza.

I was encouraged to leave Michigan after my song commemorating Michigan towns became quite popular among certain stringbands; it was called "Shafted in Shaftsburg."

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Greektown & the New Hellas is still there, although somewhat overwhelmed by the Greektown Casino that moved into the old Trappers Alley building across the street. So is the Old Shillelagh up the street. Lots of new stuff downtown, since they rebuilt Campus Martius and built the new Compuware building on the old Hudson's site. Opa!

I had a lovely meeting today with John Hardly and Mrs. Hardly at their booth at the Ann Arbor Art Fair. Thank you, frogprince.

Gee whiz, Charlie, I didn't know that was your song. I know it! Well done!

Greektown lives. What joy! Maybe it's time for another Michigan reunion.

Harpgirl-

Yes, I co-authored "Shafted in Shaftsburg" along with Maxine Parshall who still resides in Southfield. My old housemate Karrie Potter (Lady of the Lake) recorded a "family" version of it And I think we slipped a cassette into the archives of the Sectretary of State's office, in their file of "State Songs." I believe Kitty Donohue also used to sing it.

Where did you hear it?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Wanda Deagan, I think. Does that sound right?

Absolutely!

Wanda was one of Karrie's collaborators, and a fine woman in her own right.

I suppose there are people in the world who have not heard the verses to "Shafted in Shaftsburg" or the true story of its origin (copy and paste into WORD/TIMES/12 to line up chords):

Written by Charlie Ipcar & Maxine Parshall © 1975

Shafted in Shaftsburg

G
I've been shafted in Shaftsburg,
-----C--------------------G
Been lynched in Lynchburg town;
---------------------------
I've been sharpened in Flint,
----A-----------------D
And Highland's got me down;
---G
I'm all washed up in Bath,
C----------------G
Impaled in Lansing too;
------------------------E
Yes, I've been shafted in Shaftsburg,
-----A----------D-----G
Come on and get shafted too!
------------------------E
Yes, I've been shafted in Shaftsburg,
-----A----------D-----G
Come on and get shafted too!

I got fed up in Eaton Rapids,
In Custer I made my stand;
I got crocked in Potterville,
In Mason I was canned;
Reformed in Westphalia,
Benton Harbor straightened me out,
But the shafting I got in Shaftsburg
'Twas dreadful there can be no doubt!
But the shafting I got in Shaftsburg
'Twas dreadful there can be no doubt!

I lost my bearings in Wheeler,
Hamburg ground me down;
I was given the bird in Pigeon
And Fowlerville's a chickenshit town;
I got riled up in South Riley,
Ran amok in Menominee, Menominee, Menominee,
But when you come to Shaftsburg,
You'll be shafted I guarantee!
But when you come to Shaftsburg,
You'll be shafted I guarantee!

I got mixed up in Cement City,
Muskegon raised a stink;
You can't get high in Lowell,
Hart's got no soul I think;
I've been glum in Lum,
Taken for a ride in Cadillac;
But once you're shafted in Shaftsburg,
You know you're never coming back!
But once you're shafted in Shaftsburg,
You know you're never coming back!

I lost my head in Bad Ax,
And Hell it wasn't so hot;
I got f**ked over in Climax,
And Hillsdale left me flat;
I've been socked in Argyle,
Swamped in Grand Marais,
But when you're shafted in Shaftsburg,
You know you're gonna stay that way!
But when you're shafted in Shaftsburg,
You know you're gonna stay that way!

I put up my dukes in Ellington,
Got locked in the Kalamazoo;
I got the trots in Flushing
And see-sawed at the Sault;
I got stoned in Petoskey,
Balmed in East Gilead;
But once you're shafted in Shaftsburg,
Nothing else is quite as bad!
But once you're shafted in Shaftsburg,
Nothing else is quite as bad!

I was polished off in Brighton,
In Lyons I lost my pride;
I was fleeced in Shepard,
In Frankenmuth I got fried;
I was blown away in Galesburg,
And Howeled all the way home;
When you're shafted in Shaftsburg,
You know it's time to roam!
When you're shafted in Shaftsburg,
You know it's time to roam!

I was cast out of Eden,
In Paradise I was lost;
I was damned in Holland,
In Thunder Bay, tempest tossed;
Tehquamenon was my downfall
But, Eureka, I saw the light;
When you're shafted in Shaftsburg,
You know it's time for flight!
When you're shafted in Shaftsburg,
You know it's time for flight!

I got plastered in Paris,
In Rosebush I got ripped;
I got tanked in Sherman,
In Beacon I was lit;
Fell off the wagon in Temperance,
In Brunswick I got stewed;
When you're shafted in Shaftsburg,
Nothing else is quite as crude!
When you're shafted in Shaftsburg,
Nothing else is quite as crude!

I drifted through Grand Rapids,
At Big Rock I was sunk;
Coldwater was a chilling experience,
Hemlock had a lot of punch;
Saginaw was a big letdown,
And Paw Paw's a fruity place,
But once you're shafted in Shaftsburg,
You've known real disgrace!
But once you're shafted in Shaftsburg,
You've known real disgrace!

The origin of the song was a trip that Maxine and I took to the "thumb" of Michigan (where Climax and Bad Ax are located), and to amuse ourselves we began to make up verses as we passed the little town of Shaftsburg.

I once composed a similar song for Maine but have successfully surpressed it. After all I intend to live here for the rest of my life. But some might wonder what might happen in the Town of Head Tide...

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Charley, that's great! You'd do well on my quiz: Which of the following are real towns in Michigan?
Romeo
Juliet
Montague
Capulet
Irvingdale
Melvindale
Syracuse
Rochester
Waltz
Disco
Broooklyn
Queens
Nashville
Memphis
and so on....

Cool Beans-

"Brooklyn" is the only one that I'm familiar with because Maxine used to teach high school there.

I wonder if there is a "Shaftsburg Festival"? A group of us once stopped in "downtown" Shaftsburg, got out, tuned our instruments, and sang the song. People just stared; no one seemed to care!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

The fakes are Juliet, Capulet, Irvingdale, Syracuse and Queens. All the others are real Michigan towns, even Disco.
Charley, I never heard of a Shaftsburg festival. I never even heard of Shaftsburg until you brought it up.
