Subject: BS: Failure to Lauch! From: Charley Noble Date: 30 Jul 07 - 12:35 PM Don't try to launch your boat like this at home: Click at Your Own Risk! According to Snopes, this story has been varified. Yo, ho, ho, and a bottle of Alka-Seltzer! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: BS: Failure to Launch! From: EBarnacle Date: 30 Jul 07 - 01:50 PM The closest I have come to that was when my first boat, a very old star class, was launched without adequate caulking. She sank at the bulkhead over the course of about 3 minutes. Never did completely keep the water out that year tho the rate of leakage slowed down considerable. |

Subject: RE: BS: Failure to Launch! From: Charley Noble Date: 30 Jul 07 - 04:01 PM I'd cut and paste some of this story but the Snopes website defeats my efforts to cut and paste. How rude! However, maybe someone else can succeed in hacking out the story. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: BS: Failure to Launch! From: Charley Noble Date: 30 Jul 07 - 04:28 PM Well, the event happened March 7, 2007, in the Port of Jibel Ali, Gulf of Arabia, outside Dubai, UAE. Here's a link to the original website where there are fasinating images of other marine related disasters, many involving the loading and unloading of cargo: Click at Your Own Risk! Subject: RE: BS: Failure to Launch! From: Amos Date: 31 Jul 07 - 01:59 AM Failure to Launch Claim: Photographs show an expensive yacht capsizing during transport. Status: True. Example: [Collected via e-mail, June 2007] 65' Custom Built Motoryacht, staterooms, gps navigation, twin supercharged diesels, etc. = $ 2.5 million. Crane and Rigging complete with faulty turnbuckle = $2,500 per hour. Champagne and Strawberries, dockside, for the excited "soon to be owners" = $250.00. Watching your dreamboat nose dive into the harbor, accompanied by two corporate representatives just prior to "inking" the final paperwork ... Priceless. Origins: According to the site cargolaw.com, the above-depicted yacht mishap occurred on 7 March 2007 at Port Jebel Ali (a man-made harbor in the Gulf of Arabia outside Dubai, UAE). When the pictured $1.5 million Carver 55' Marquis Motor Yacht was being lifted aboard a cargo ship by slings for transport to the U.S., it slipped out of the forward sling, plunged bow-first into the water, and capsized, with the friction from the rear sling tearing off the yacht's propellers, shafts, struts, and drive train. A marketing representative with Carver Yachts confirmed that this explanation is basically correct: "We are aware of this accident. The sling broke while it was being placed in the water. They are legitimate pictures that you have forwarded on to us." Subject: RE: BS: Failure to Launch! From: Charley Noble Date: 31 Jul 07 - 07:52 AM Amos- Well done! The marine insurance industry appears to have a good sense of humor. I missed this line: "Champagne and Strawberries, dockside, for the excited "soon to be owners" = $250.00." You know, "Champagne and Strawberries" would make a great title for a song!
