From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 01 Aug 07 - 08:04 AM Thanks, everyone- I guess it doesn't matter when we turn up, it promises to be a lovely area to visit! I think we'll be flying straight to Asheville, but I'll let y'all know when we'll be there. |

I rented a cabin in Weaverville last year. Jack of the Wood in Asheville has something pretty much every night of the week -Irish sessions, bluegrass jams, open mike. They have a nice website but my blue clickys never work. :~( If you're a Tom Waits fan, late Sunday night is Tom Waits time, do your best (or worst) covers. |

Warren Wilson College also hosts some good music (home of the Swannanoah Gathering). Can y'all tell I love the place? Hoping to retire there someday. HC |
Subject: RE: What's on Swannanoa/Asheville this fall? From: HouseCat Date: 31 Jul 07 - 11:18 AM When you hike Mt. Mitchell, try to go early in the day on a weekday. It's so quiet and not too many people about. It's one of my favorite places on earth. Walk through the balsam forests and just breeeeeaaaaathe.......really deep. Go to the Folklife Center and spend too much money :~). In Asheville, go to Jack of the Wood pub. You may just catch John Doyle sitting in on a session. Asheville is his hometown now. |

Subject: RE: What's on Swannanoa/Asheville this fall? From: GUEST,PMB Date: 31 Jul 07 - 08:46 AM Is the Old Fort firehouse thing still running? That was one of the most enjoyable parts of my stay in NC. |
Subject: RE: What's on Swannanoa/Asheville this fall? From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 31 Jul 07 - 07:54 AM These sound very appealing, and I absolutely love to hike. I look forward to enjoying the scenery! Thanks for these great suggestions. However, I was thinking more along the lines of musical happenings, concerts, even wonderful music stores... how 'bout it? |
Subject: RE: What's on Swannanoa/Asheville this fall? From: Janie Date: 30 Jul 07 - 11:00 PM Mt. Mitchell, the highest mountain east of the Mississippi is only 33 miles from there. The Western North Carolina Nature Center is just about 3 miles from the Swannanoa exit of I-40. Ther is an Fold life center on the Prkway at Ashville. Get a local or National Forest Map, and head up one of the gravel roads (many in good shape) to check out the beautiful streams and hollers (they call them coves, not hollers. Ashville is a fun town to poke around in. I've been to Biltmore Estate, but the gardens are quite reknown. Or head east a few miles to Black Mountain - another little gem - and drive out to Montreat. We are in the middle of a rather long term drought so I don't know what that will mean for fall color, but mid to late October is usually peak time, Shining Rock is not too far and is stunning. Nuff said? Janie |
Subject: RE: What's on Swannanoa/Asheville this fall? From: Janie Date: 30 Jul 07 - 10:41 PM Fall is a lovely time over in the mountains. You are very near Ashville where is always alot going on. Some of the best scenery on the Blur Ridge Parkway, hiking. You won't have a bit of trouble amusing yourself. And yeh, come on down! Janie |
Subject: RE: What's on Swannanoa/Asheville this fall? From: GUEST,Dani Date: 30 Jul 07 - 07:50 PM There are lots of wonderful summer things there, I don't know about the fall. But if you're coming through the middle of the state, please PM so we can arrange a stop on your journey! Dani |
Subject: What's on Swannanoa/Asheville this fall? From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 30 Jul 07 - 07:29 PM A friend has family business in Swannanoa, NC (US) this fall- no particular date, can happen any time, really- and she wants me to travel with her, as she hates to travel alone. I thought I'd ask you good folks if there's anything special happening in Sept-Oct or Nov that would give me something to do while she takes care of her business. Any ideas? |
