Subject: Washington DC song sesions From: Susan A-R Date: 16 Apr 99 - 10:18 PM I'll be down in DC Monday and Tuesday (well all week actually, but those are the evenings I may actually have a chance to get out and find music. Anything I should knopw about, preferably accesible by public transit, or not too awful difficult via cab. (I know you are out there in droves. Hope there's something going on when I'm around.) Subject: RE: Washington DC song sesions From: Wotcha Date: 17 Apr 99 - 10:09 AM Susan: You are in luck (if you like things nautical). The sea shanty folks (The Ships Company and some odds and sods from Pyrates Royale) are starting a new sea shanty sing on the third Tuesday of every month -- Tuesday 20 April is that day. Come on down to The Hard Times Cafe, 1404 King Street, Old Town Alexandria, it is a slight crawl from the Metro but easy to get to. Recommend you get there before the 8pm kick off time to get a seat and a meal. Just bring a shanty and join in. We will see you there! Cheers, Brian |

Subject: RE: Washington DC song sesions From: Charlie Baum Date: 18 Apr 99 - 02:47 AM Of course, the DC folk gathered on Saturday night (April 17th) to hear a wonderful concert by Jean Ritchie, and then, in typical FSGW style, had a sing-around after the concert. One concert that's probbaly NOT on the FSGW website--Monday, April 19th, Oscar Brand singing a program of American Politcal and Presidential Campaign Songs from the 1700s to the present--at the Silver Spring Public Library, 8901 Colesville Road, Silver Spring, Maryland. It starts at 7:30 or 8:00. An information number is listed as 301-565-7689. The library is a 10 minute walk from the Silver SPring Metro, and there are many busses along Colesville Road if you don't want to walk. Oscar Brand also sang Saturday evening--a program of his bawdy songs, but I was at Jean Ritchie's concert instead. -Charlie Baum |

Subject: RE: Washington DC song sesions From: Ferrara Date: 18 Apr 99 - 10:40 AM Susan, where will you be, ie what part of town? The Reston Folk Club has an open mike on Tuesday, sadly it's at the same time as the shanty sing. I've made plans to go to Reston this week. Depending on where you are and on the timing, we might be able to take you. (But we need to get there by 6:30 or 7 to sign up.) I've only been there once. That night the music ran to very skilled singer songwriters with some trad. I'm told it varies from week to week. You could E-mail me if this appeals. I intend to sing if I can, because I get a bad case of nerves in front of an audience and it's time to get over that. - Rita F |

Subject: RE: Washington DC song sesions From: Susan A-R Date: 25 Apr 99 - 08:17 PM Thank you al for your suggestions. I did end up at the Hard Times Cafe for the shanty sing and it was well worth it. Good singers, lots of material I had not heard, and a welcoming bunch. check it out on the 3rd Tuesday of every month. Also, there's another one with the same folks on the first Tuesday somewhere in heaton MD. Wotcha, can you give folks details on that? Susan |

Subject: RE: Washington DC song sesions From: Wotcha Date: 25 Apr 99 - 09:29 PM Susan: Thanks for the plug! By the way, Quare Bungle Rye was a perfect contribution. Next shanty sing will be Tuesday, 4 May, at the Royal Mile Pub, 2407 Price Ave., Wheaton, MD: take Exit 31 North from the Beltway and go up Georgia Ave and take the last right before University Blvd. Kick off time is 8pm but get there early and enjoy some pub grub. This is a regular fixture (first Tuesday of every month) and everyone is encouraged to join in. Cheers, Brian |
