I would like to mention on Mudcat two fine singers of English tradional songs .I saw Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher several times at the Sidmouth FolkWeek and was knocked out by Dave's fine singing and the concertina accompaniment of Ken. I had seen them a few weeks earlier at the Gower Folk Festival and was keen to see them again and for me they were one of the great finds of the festival.Great stuff!

Yes, yes. Very good on CD, but the sheer joy of a live performance from these two is hard to describe.

First saw them a few years ago in their native Lincolnshire, and if there were a Baedeker guide to folk acts I would expect them to get a "Worth a significant detour to see them" rating.

Glad you've 'discovered' them at last Albert. They were superb and unnecessarily brief at Saddleworth last month. Must be seen, not just heard to really appreciate their performances

For those who haven't heard them, they appeared on the fine "Songlinks" collection, and they have released four CDs of their own:
Their Fine Array, Old Men & Love Songs, Less Sprightly and Fit For Reclining

All of which are available from CAMSCO Music. Call at 800/548-FOLK

They also donated two songs for the yellowbellies 1 and the yellowbellies 2 CD's which have raised together over £2000 towards charity.

as many of you know, the word traditional usually has me scrambling for the door - like being part of a tradition absolves so many people of the need to entertain or to learn the words of songs - but these guys are traditional, and they are absolute delight. Lincolnshire's finest. there should be a statue to dave in Boston instead of the Ingram memorial - time that bloody monstrosity was resited to somewhere more in line with its importance.

Like Frampton Marsh - the boggy bit!

They do a lot of 'contemporary traditional' stuff, too! Occasionally they team up with John Conolly for the odd song or three.

Bill's MIDI concertina... if you haven't seen 'Son of Purple People Pleaser', you haven't lived!

My partner has regular periods where he will play their CDs constantly (and we have all 4!)
Just wish we'd have a chance to SEE these wonderful blokes perform!
We're Down Under in Oz :~(

Cheers! R-J

R-J, organise a tour for them! Get them a couple of dozen decent-paying gigs with accommodation thrown in and make them an offer they can't refuse! I bet it would even bring a half-smile to Bill's face! (Although he'd still find summat to moan about! LOL!).

Seriously - they are very, very special and it really would be a worthwhile venture if someone down there had the resources to get them there and put them on.

I saw them at Grand Union Folk, Barrow on Soar, Leics (plug: great club).

It was one of the most enjoyable evenings at a folk club ever.

Dave Fletcher is a fine singer, with a jovial, confident, garrulous manner. Bill Whaley sits in silence for minutes at a time, then says exactly the funniest thing immaginable in a perfect deadpan. Such perfect spontaneity must be the result of years of practice. ;0)

Fine singing, good music, and an excellent comedy double act. Well worth seeing.

I have their album, "Old Men and Love Songs" which is very nice.

Amazing performers, live they are worth the price of 10 CDs. Dave's voice is angelic, but don't discount Bill's voice either. The patter is side-splitting, the warmth of their presence better than a well-stocked fire in the middle of winter, and as people they are the most unassuming and gentle folk, as far as I can tell from the times we chatted. Someone called them "Lincolnshire's best kept secret" and they're right.

This summer they're supposed to be doing one of my songs, and I can't wait to hear it - Dave told me they were in the final stages of rehearsal some 3 months back. Unfortunately we are not due to be at any festivals together this summer, so I may have to wait; but I know it'll be worth it.

But please forget all thoughts of world tours and the like Dave -- we want to keep you all to ourselves..

PS - for anyone wanting to see them at Whitby I believe they are appearing with Martin Wyndham-Read on the Thursday.

Yes George, you put it all so much better than I could have done (but for the one phrase!) - Bill and Dave are national treasures indeed, and an inspiration to us all. I've "made the detour", from 25 to 125 miles each way, many a time, to see them perform live, and it's been more than worth it each time. The "traditional experience", great songs and great singing, from two of the most warm-hearted folk on the scene, you get all that from Bill and Dave, no question.

Woke up to a real treat this morning - an MP3 from Goldengob of the song in question from the rehearsals. Aaahhhh! The rest of you 'll just have to go and see them, this is going straight into my bottom drawer!

First saw Bill and Dave probably 6/7 years ago and was knocked out by their virtuosity.

About a year later we saw them play the opening Saturday concert at Whitby Folk Week and they were first on. To say they won the audience over is a vast understatement. We will always remember the applause they received at the end of their set, it went on for over 5 minutes and thoroughly deserved, not many get a reception like that, one of our great Whitby memories. Jewels in the Crown..

Lovely fellas, (especially that grumpy old one) - just kidding about the 'old', Bill.

"Good to see you earning your keep at last", was his response to my informing them I was stewarding at Sidmouth!

I, too, am looking forward to hearing them sing 'Miracle of Life'. A great song sung by two of folk's nicest singers - can't wait.

Christine
