Thank goodness. Thanks to Larry for his work in helping to ensure free speech in the land of the free, at the cost of $3.5M. I may not care for what he proferred, but, he surely did a great deed for the American people.

In a land where Henry Rollins has got his own TV show, free speech can't be suffering all that much. This is indeed good to know.

One lower-level supervisor where I worked a few years ago was an extreme right wing reactionary; he could look at almost any newspaper article, including items with little or no political implication, and find some excuse for ranting about the liberal bias of all the press. At the same time, he was a big fan of Penthouse. He brought up the Flint-Falwell case one time, and I said something to the effect that I would hate to have to choose between defending one of the other of those two. He looked puzzled, and said "I would think that would be very easy for you". He didn't know my opinions that well; I didn't generally volunteer them to him for fear of getting him started. I was never quite sure which side he assumed I would come down on.
I agreed with the court decision on the case, but not because I had any particular respect for Flint.

As has been said elsewhere, the purpose of the amendment is to protect unpopular or unpleasant speech from the government.
