Romney: No Army For My Sons...They Show Patriotism By "Helping Me Get Elected"
From fivebrothers.mittromney.com
Romney Speaks Up for Sons' Decisions

GLEN JOHNSON | August 8, 2007 05:44 PM EST |
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BETTENDORF, Iowa — Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on Wednesday defended his five sons' decision not to enlist in the military, saying they're showing their support for the country by "helping me get elected."

Romney, who did not serve in Vietnam due to his Mormon missionary work and a high draft lottery number, was asked the question by an anti-war activist after a speech in which he called for "a surge of support" for U.S. forces in Iraq.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, also saluted a uniformed soldier in the crowd and called for donations to military support organizations. Last week, he donated $25,000 to seven such organizations.

"The good news is that we have a volunteer Army and that's the way we're going to keep it," Romney told some 200 people gathered in an abbey near the Mississippi River that had been converted into a hotel. "My sons are all adults and they've made decisions about their careers and they've chosen not to serve in the military and active duty and I respect their decision in that regard."

He's right service in the armed forces of the United States of America are voluntary. His son's have decided not to serve as have the majority of youth of America, so what's the big deal? For that matter where are your children/grand children Guest 282RA/Ebbie? If you are trying to imply that Mitt Romney's son's should enlist, then make damn sure your own are right behind them in the line. Seems like what you have at the moment is a law for the goose as well as the gander - same for everybody, exactly as it should be.

Mitt is trying to be a leader. Ok, so lead!

Well, with his being such a supporter of the Republican party line on the war, it seems hypocritical that he should "allow" all those poor and lower middle-class shlubs fight it for him while his own family stays home to make money. It is noteworthy how many of the Republican hawks have not served and don't have family members that have, either. Course they'd manage their way out of a draft, if there was one, ala "Texas Air National Guard."

Saul, in what way does Mitt Romney "allow" people to volunteer?

A good leader never expects his people to do that which he is not willing to do.

Well, he doesn't try to stop 'em. And if they didn't then how could we fight any decent war? If all of those volunteer soldiers decided to be patriotic by helping elect people, then there would be no military force.

I've done my time, T. And I'm too old now to be going through the grind of military life. But I did six years and I was sent to the Middle East where I saw fellow sailors get killed.

I am not a military-minded person and did not enjoy military life but I did six active years without complaint. i expect every man to serve his country.

I don't have any children but if they supported this war, I would expect them to fight in it.

But the idea that helping Mitt Romney get elected in any way equates what a soldier in Iraq goes through is insulting and patronizing and wholly unbecoming of anyone who considers themselves patriotic.

But I fully expected your cowardly defense of the indefensible. And don't tell you servedc because you obviously did not.

Kendall, I believe that it is, "A good leader never asks/orders anybody to do that which he would not be fully prepared to do himself." The leader is the person in command and therefore when needs must he must delegate.

Volunteer: - a person who voluntarily undertakes or expresses a willingness to undertake a service: as in one who enters into military service voluntarily.

Now if that is the true definition of the term Volunteer, Saul, it would appear that as a volunteer he/she requires no-ones by-your-leave - Not even a prospective Presidential Candidates.

I am now going to surprise you 282RA:

"But the idea that helping Mitt Romney get elected in any way equates what a soldier in Iraq goes through is insulting and patronizing and wholly unbecoming of anyone who considers themselves patriotic."

You are 100% on target with that and I totally agree with you.

Teribus is trying to point out that you folks are arguing the wrong premise. The fact that Romney's kids have decided not to be in the military is their business. The fact that Romney didn't come and join us in the party in 'Nam was his business.

But ain't it strange, Pa, that all them fellers that are the most hawkish don't have any scars, have never pissed themselves for fear of dying in a firefight, have never stood over the body of a 14 or 15 year old kid fighting for the other side and cried wondering what this kid was doing here instead of playing ball somewhere, and aren't suffering from repeated nightmares or the effects of Agent Orange?    And you know what is stranger? The dumbass Americans who vote for these folks and think that these self same politicos are patriotic because these con artists salute the flag, dress nice, and talk about this country being the greatest in the world. Got a surprise for you folks. Because these con artists have sold you a bill of goods, your roads and bridges are crumbling, folks are choosing between medicine and food, and we aren't even in the top 10 of the greatest, whatever the hell that means. FEMA can't resolve the problems of the poor victims in New Orleans, folks in Minneapolis/St. Paul dying because of the funding cuts in inspection money, but you vote for folks that want to spend billions killing Iraquis based on a lie, you vote for folks that want to build a wall in the Southwest US. If you ran your household budget this way you would be out of your home. You can't have something for nothing, folks. You just keep voting for guys like this, who look good, have a good looking spouse, and make you comfortable. While you are gazing on their lovely personages, the pickpocket is taking your money..

Rant off,

Mick

Sounds to me like some folks are saying that since Romney supports the war, he should compel his sons to enter military service to score points for himself. Well, to the best of my knowledge there's no provision in US law allowing a parent to forcibly enlist his children. They are, after all, adults and the decision is theirs, not his.

He attacked me for my post as though I were attacking Romney's sons. I did no such thing and the title of the post shows exactly whom I was attacking.

Nice post Mick and you have the best credentials to put that up as well.

I just get angry that, in a country which does not have free health cover for its children, so much taxpayers money is being poured into a totally unjustified war, backed by a load of armchair warriors who would probably shit themselves if they were put anywhere near a war zone.

282RA my apologies if you thought I was "attacking" you - I was merely asking you a question in order to clarify in my own mind the point of your original post. Your subsequent response answered my question and I tabled with my total agreement.
